this is something that i've thought about for a long time. i hate starting threads and not having much substance to add to them, but i'm going to do it yet again as this is something that will take me some stewing. once i begin i'll probably go on for a while, i just don't have that kind of attention span right now. :D

btw mods, please don't move this to the music forums as i'm looking for more of a psychological/societal relation between music and the listener as opposed to an actual discussion on music. then again, if you think it would illicit a good response there, then do with it what you'd like, but if possible, can i leave this thread in SO as well? thanks. :)

I listen to mostly heavy shit (As we lay dying, in flames, job for a cowboy) I think it allows me to release anger in a healthy way

....shit never thought about that before.....

you mean retarded? :D

i know what you mean though, i was big into hardcore for a long time. i don't know that i'd consider it a coincidence that it was also during some of my most reckless times in my life. then again, could my actions have been influenced by my music or was it the other way around? it's a question that takes too many intangibles into the equation, but it's an interesting thought to ponder. :)

nowadays i listen to mostly dubstep to get my swagger on, house to get my gay on, post-rock and post-hardcore to get my total chillaxed drone on, pop (like the uber poppy, cookie cutter shit) to get my mindless self indulgence on (and no i don't mean the band... i DON'T like MSI hah!), and a MASSIVE amount of other music from ALL OVER the spectrum for many other reasons.

i think my musical taste reflects my openness as well. i'm open to pretty much anything as long as it's quality. i take pride in fine tuning details which is why i think i thrive on music with such a swagger and flexibility (dubstep). it allows me to be satisfied in so many ways. something i look for in all artforms and other things such as beer (i like good beer what can i say!), sports, etc. but i also get down on the slow non-swaggered stuff, usually less formulaic (think god speed! you black emperor, isis, sigur ros, explosions in the sky, mouth of the architect, etc.) because it helps me to remember to always think outside the box. it's like i'm being spoon fed the answers to intricate riddles, but i still have to show how i came to the conclusion.

As I lay dying is epic, I listin to a lot of different kind of music, I like to do deathcore and grindcore covers to vent my anger. I listin to techno/trance when I'm in a party mood. Acoustic songs are for when I'm feeling emotional. I like ONE rap song, and I only listin to it when I'm thinking about my friends or hanging with them.

i don't really think of listening to music in terms of "to get my <x> on", i just love good music in general. and yeah i know some people are thinking "well, good is subjective" but it's almost impossible to think that way about something you're really passionate about.

I just find it plain impossible not to be passionate about music. People usually give me strange looks when I begin to rant about music 8)

The key word in pleasing me musically: UPLIFTING.

I like highly soulful music that moves me, and when I need motivation, fun exciting music that uplifts and rivets me.

Though I love to argue for hours about the history of music and what made certain artists great or not so great, there is really nothing rational about why I like the music I like. I'm not the type of person who can force myself to get into a certain artist just because they're highly respected, highly talented, or important influentially to music I like. They either have a sound and a vibe about them that moves me, or not. I find it easy to recognize that an artist is musically talented and makes music of high artistic merit, without enjoying or planning to get into that artist at all.

'Badass' is not a factor that influences my musical choices in any way, and never has been. I like some 'hard' music, but not for its hardness. For example, I listen to a lot of drum 'n bass, but I rarely talk to other fans about this music, because what I enjoy about it is the soulfulness of more liquid and ragga tunes, and the feeling of awe that mighty bass reverberations give me. It has nothing to do with the genre's general abrasiveness, which is what seems to draw most fans I've met to it.

Likewise, my favorite metal songs tend to be prog metal, you know, high pitched male voices singing about slaying dragons, in between twiddly melodic guitar solos. I don't relish explaining to serious metal fans why a couple Scandanavian guys gutturally growling about the pointlessness of life doesn't do a damn thing for me.

I really don't like the Beatles. Well, more to the point, I don't like John Lennon's sound. (Paul's melodies and lyrics are actually pretty awesome). It really irritates me that you can find nary a British rock band nowadays that hasn't borrowed that dreary, mopey John Lennon songwriting sound to at least some degree.

My taste in music probably says I'm a very moody person, as what I listen to always reflects my current mood. :)

Well, my music taste is very open and eclectic, just like me :)
Plain and simple.
Or not :)

Mine is all over the place, but I usually do concentrate more on certain genres over a length of time or period of my life. I still listen to most things I've been into from time to time for nostalgia if nothing else, but usually cause I still like it too. :)

For the past couple years it's been a lot of folk music, so I guess that maybe that means I'm laid back and settling down in my life or something?

^ Do you like to sing to yourself? I've known a lot of folk fans in my time, and one thing they all had in common was the habit of liking to burst into song, and actually have something complete, meaningful, and melodious come out. The beauty of folk is that it's made to be very singable by a wide range of people.

Tonight I had an epiphany. I usually think of musos as below the so called level of capital class. But when I saw these 2 videos play tonight from my country-(New Zealand) it made me realise how onto it these artists were with respect to their music videos portraying how I feel and see society on a daily basis. They were so accurate. It helped me see the intellect in some music through moving pictures in harmony-the song, and this made me respect not only music but where I would be without it

I'll listen to anything that makes me feel something, that moves me in any way. Depending on how I already feel, or how I want to feel. Like Mdao, I really like things that I find 'uplifting', things that get my imagination and motivation going, that make me feel 'connected'.

Even alot of metal I listen too, even if the lyrics aren't particularly uplifting, I find the guitar melodies and solos ultimately 'heroic' and mood elevating. Children of Bodom comes to mind...TBH i think alot of their lyrics are somewhat lame, but damn that guy can write music.

I really like metal that has an almost poetic esoteric quality to their lyrics.

Lately I've been listening to things the I can just move my body too. Music that makes me feel uninhibited. I'm talking about electronic and the wide variety of forms it comes in of course. :) I think that rides parallel with my thoughts and actions lately. I've been thinking more about the future, and doing things instead of thinking about them, meeting alot of people, etc.

I'm not really into folk music, and I'm not sure if this would be 100% down your normal alley but my cousin is a pretty big folk/indie artist. His name is Joey Ryan.

Here is my favorite song by him (acoustic version, actual recording is better IMO).

I implore anyone who likes laid back music and acoustic guitar to check it out, he is really good.

As for tastes in music , I think it says a lot about a person.

Electronic Music- You take recreational drugs
Country- You're from a rural area, likely a conservative, predominately female
Metal- You have anger issues/ use music to relieve tension
Rock- You're white
Jazz- You're wealthy
Hip-Hop/rap- You're young

Obviously there are exceptions to these rules but I'd say they're pretty accurate.

Wow. I couldn't disagree more.

One thing that has surprised and continues to do so is finding out the different varieties of music that people I know/met listen to.
