What does smoke mean when testing MDMA powder?

Tests looked exactly as they should for MDMA but they fizzed and a little puff of smoke on the Marquis and Mecke. I've seen the fizzing before and I know it has something to do with the HCL but what does the smoke mean?

if enough HCl goes into gaseous state, you will see it as white "smoke". (I cannot garantuee you that this is what you saw though)

greets :)

Thanks Bagseed. That would stay consistent to the test results... Reactions looked just like normal except for a little extra fizzle and extra smoke. From what you are saying both could be caused by more HCL being used. Anyone else have any other thoughts?

Does anyone know if the HCL has any effect on safety, quality, or experience?

MDMA is almost always in HCl form on he streets. The MDMA you are testing is not simply MDMA, it's actually MDMA.HCl, one molecule, a salt of the freebase MDMA. So in a way the more HCl you have in a sample the more MDMA is going to be in there as they are always bonded together. IIRC it's always 84% MDMA and 16% HCl. So smoke doesn't really say much, it's just an indication that there is a drug in there in HCl-salt form, like MDMA. Smoke can be an indication of potency but it could just as well mean that the MDMA wasn't mixed properly and that you just happened to test part of your drugs that had a concentrated spot of MDMA in it. However if the colour indicates MDMA than smoke can be an extra confirmation of the result

Thanks guys! I found this on the Dancesafe website as well.

"The puff of smoke is a common reaction of sulfuric acid (inside the marquis, mecke and mandelin) with hydrochloric salts, of which most of these compounds consist (as in “MDMA hydrochloride,” etc.) It sometimes happens and sometimes it doesn’t, but doesn’t mean much insofar as identifying the compound goes, as a great many compounds can make the puff. Same thing with bubbles if you see those."
