So I've been suffering from social anxiety and anxiety in general for the past 2 years. It keeps escalating. So I recently got on doxepin, 10mg a day. Dose will be increased in a week. So I'm wondering what you guys take for anxiety LONG TERM. No need to mention benzos or barbs. And btw does anyone use barbs anymore?

i use benzos but first they tried me on buspar and me and even most of my doctors think that buspar is a bull shit drug that doesn't help anyone

phenibut works pretty well for being legal and cheap...no ssris have helped much tbh...

Lyrica, Pristiq, Adderall, Remeron, Seroquel. They all help with anxiety though only Lyrica is prescribed to me specifically for anxiety.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, drugs are band aids and they make shit worse long term

Testosterone will do wonders. Confidence in a syringe.

Honestly you just need exposure and experience to build real confidence.

Therapy is a start but they're just going to prepare you to put yourself out there, actually putting yourself out there is on you.

I would recommend Cipralex (Escitalopram) originally made as an anti depression drug but was found out to be very effective for generalized anxiety disorder, its a pill you need to take daily, in the morning, consult your doctor about it, it made wonders for me, along with Xanax it made my panic attacks that were associated with anxiety attacks go away.

I'm looking into that, not sure if I'll take such a big step.

But, as soon as the meds doesn’t work anymore, what are you going to do?

I have no idea. But in a few years I should be under less stress, and I'd be able to cope with everything on my own. It's not that bad anyway, I go out with friends every week etc but I'm not as comfortable in some situations as I'd like to be.

You are right it should.

Keep exposing yourself to it, it will subside.

I find Bacopa monnieri to be helpful. It's the only herbal supplement I've ever had any success with. It's also good for depression and memory recall. From what I've gleaned, the general consensus is that it doesn't cause addiction/dependency. I've never experienced any withdrawal symptoms from cessation after prolonged use myself. L-theanine is also helpful without dependency issues but it's pretty weak.

You don't actually need to take it with the Xanax unless it's some sort of sudden depression or something post traumatic
I know most doctors would say it helps with general placebo at first, and carries on into the 2nd,3rd,4th weeks of the med, when the med hasn't really taken effect, and the Xanax isn't carried into the treatment past the first week...

You also need to be on it for at least 6 months, prior to previous belief of 1 month, to notice the actual improvement in most patients and to quit gradually after that even if it does nothing to you other than tummy issues and decreased libido... there will be W/D

For me, I tried that, I tried benzos alone, I tried hypnotics, I tried stims
out of all those, I found the benzo+stim combo to work amazing, but there sure was a debt afterwards...

Like one other person here said, talking with a therapist I know helped me more than all of those little experiments
I wasn't too eager to work with him at first, but once I learned how let out my thoughts he did help reach a better understanding, gave me different points of view on situations and just basically put a lot of shit in perspective...

Also I talk with friends, about pretty much anything that'd make the optimism come out, making them support me, not by asking, more like by navigating conversations... sure it sounds a little manipulative, but if it works and doesn't hurt anyone then why not?

I like kava a lot. I find it to be pretty sedating and a bit euphoric. It's a GABA agonist so theoretically tolerance and addiction can build but it's no where close to benzos or phenibut in that regard. The only thing that truly concerns me is liver toxicity but if you are just using it occasionally without alcohol I'm guessing that the risk is minimal. Then again I was a raging alcoholic from my teenage years into my mid/late 20s so now I'm a bit paranoid about anything hepatoxic. I still use kava with weed once in a while. Honokiol is also a good anxiolitic that's a powerful antioxidant and very good for the liver. It's found in magnolia bark. I guess when I said Bacopa was the only herbal supplement I've had success with I had a bit of a brain fart. Bacopa is probably the best for daily use and long term management though.

Gabapentin. I gave a couple to a friend with anxiety issues and it helped. She's going to her gp to ask to get some prescribed. It's easier to function on gabapentin than lyrica or benzodiazapams I think, and its also a mood elevator. That said, its only way to manage your symptom and you might want to figure out why you have gad.
