Cocaine What do you do in case of cocaine overdose?

In the movie "drug war" and undercover cop wants to catch drug dealers and then in order to not lose his cover is
forced to take 2 lines of cocaine. The drug dealer also sniffs cocaine, I think he takes even 3 lines, he tolerates it without
problems. The cop manages to act normal until their conversation is over but once the dealer is gone he rolls on the floor
and has hallucinations. He is then told to drink plenty of water and jumps into the bathtub with ice cold water.

I wonder if this what you really do in case of an overdose?

What are the main symptoms you get from an overdose? Hallucinations, overheating, high pulse?

What if for example his heart stopped from the ice cold water?

What kind of person ods from two lines of blow they musta been a half gram each or cut.

But no, if a person is od'ing and having a seizure call 911. If it's just a minor OD, drink water sounds good not sure about a ice bath, but take some benzos if available Lie down drink water focus on breathing, long deep breaths to slow ur heart rate down.

That movie sounds lame ;). I've read in the past that it's been estimated that around 1.5 g of pure cocaine is needed to achieve a fatal dose in non-tolerance users.

I'm not a dr and may be talking out my ass but if someone is od'ing from cocaine, probably shouldn't give them anything. 911. Even if you believe it's minor. Benzos slow respiration and coke speeds it up, good way to make your heart just give up. Isn't that what Whitney Houston did?

I assume it was cocaine. I mean it was white stuff which they sniffed in lines.

The one guy also said that the cop must not lie down but that he has to keep moving.

I just wanted to know if these advice which they gave in this movie were sound or bogus.

But the movie is really cool btw. It's an asian movie and it's total carnage at the end.

thats actually mostly untrue... its not like your heart gets "confused"... cocaine is bad enough on its own but the major risk of combinign it with depressants is actually that it can mask a depressant OD until the cocaine is metabolized, and then you're a goner.

benzodiazepines are used by drs to treat the agitation of cocaine overdose... they don't slow heart rate that much, but even then, they're just a bandaid and anyone being treated for OD will also be monitored by EKG and shit to be sure they don't go into arrest.

the best thing to do for anything less than a crazy fucking seizure/heart-attack level OD is to wait it out and avoid taking any more drugs.

God people are so misinformed. If you go to the hospital for a cocaine OD, they will TREAT IT with benzos. Your heart doesn't have a "tugowar" between the coke and benzo. The whole upper and downer danger thing is caused by overdoing downers while high on uppers, so when the uppers wear off you are so messed up from the downers you OD. Taking a mild dose of benzos (1-2mg Xanax or 10-20mg diazepam) actually makes stimulants safer as it slows your heart rate back down to a more normal rate.

It's become a myth that uppers and downers combined cause od's. This isn't true, in moderation downers combined with uppers actually make it a more safe experience. Speedballs are infamous for causing death because people take 5x more downers then safe when high on the uppers, and then when the uppers wear off they OD from respiratory depression, not from a heart attack caused by a "tug-o-war" between uppers and downers.

It's bogus. Keeping walking while high on lots of cocaine may help you avoid a "bad buzz" that you make experience while laying down high on cocaine, but the treatment for cocaine OD is ideally laying down. It may have been white powder, but tbh real cocaine is more shiny and flaky then just a white powder. Almost all cocaine especially if it's not chopped from a shiny rock is cut to shit.

And does the advice with the bathtub and the ice water make sense?
In the movie it looked like his body temperature was going through the roof. Is this a classic OD side effect?

Cocaine can raise body temperature but usually it takes some pretty crazy doses to fuck your body temperature up.

Film is not exactly the most accurate portrayal of drug usage.

Bathtub is usually for Ecstasy or bad Molly. Benzos are the way to go to get the anxiety and stress out. If you feel like you are going to OD Drink lots of soda with sugar. ( i know it sounds crazy but it levels you out. also do the 4-7-8 Breathing. Slows your heart rate.
that Movie is bull.

Ok thanks.
That's really disappointing. I thought I had learned something from that movie.

If I watch it again I'll pay more attention to find out what they are sniffing. Maybe the mention it somewhere.

I don't doubt its cocaine they are doing. But its all part of Hollywood being used as a tool in the drug war to portray drugs as a "you can do just a little bit and die" type thing. This is rarely the case with stimulants. The only real danger from using a drug the first time is either an allergic reaction or addiction. But opiates and depressants can kill even the first time... And the treatment is not an icecold bath its a Narcan dose/ER visit.

I still am advocating for seeking professional help over self medicating.

This myth really grinds my gears as well, especially when I get judgmental looks for trying to give someone who's had too much stims some crushed up benzos in powder in a glass, or an ampoule of Versed. "You're gonna give him MORE drugs?"

Cocaine's local anesthetic properties mean that it's much much more likely to cause sudden death in a naive user. Other stimulants are fairly safe, though.

In case of cocaine overdose generally a benzo like attivan is given I think. MAybe a beta-blocker as well.

Here you go:

STIMULANT INTOXICATION MANAGEMENT
Fast-acting benzodiazepines such as lorazepam (Ativan) or diazepam (Valium) are useful for calming an anxious, agitated patient

STIMULANT OVERDOSE MANAGEMENT
Treat seizures like status epilepticus with intravenous diazepam or other benzodiazepine. Diazepam is most effective if administered before or shortly after cocaine ingestion but is less effective after seizures begin. Phenobarbitol or phenytoin (Dilantin) may be used if diazepam is ineffective

And:

TREATMENT:
IV benzodiazepines

Benzodiazepines are the preferred initial treatment for CNS excitation, seizures, tachycardia, and hypertension. Lorazepam 2 to 3 mg IV q 5 min titrated to effect may be used. High doses or a continuous infusion may be required.
