what are the best prescription sleeping pills?

I need to find a pill that will put me to sleep and doesn't have a really long half life. Is there one that I won't become tolerant to. I was on Ambien, but it only worked for a while. I'd also like to know which ones are hard on your liver.

what do you take?

does it work?

anything over the counter?


I know you guys aren't doctors, but it seems my doc is in the pocket of the drug companies, and is more concerned with pushing the "latest and greatest" than giving me what I need. I'll basically have to find out on my own and then ask him for them. So any input is appreciated:)
 
Hypnoval (Midalozam) 7.5mg tabs,1-3 will knock out the MOST insomniac amoung you. Don't know if it's in the US.

Other than that, try Gods sleeping pill, Seconal-100mgs Red bullets (Secobarbital Sodium) this stuff will knock out Elvis on 200mgs Dexedrine.

Benzos usually help me sleep... I haven't tried every drug in the book, so it would be foolish of me to advise you on what's the best, however it had been my experience that seroquel was by far the best drug I ever had for sleep. It's an anti-psychotic normally prescribed for patients with disorders like schizophrenia. You might talk to your doctor about a low dose, it's not going to hurt you any, thought it did seem to make me a little slower the next day. Nothing real noticeable though. I suffer from chronic sleep problems myself, but due to the lack of medical insurance I usually just drug myself to the gills on benadryl and pass out. Goodluck to ya.
 
My doc says sleeping pills do more harm then they can good so I have to find sleeping pills on the street. Ambien has always worked wonders for me, given I haven't taken them more then two days in a row.

A close second is alprazolam (xanax), but I find even this fast-acting, strong benzo to not cut it sometimes. To fix this I recommend the two following augmentations to the MOA of alprazolam:

1. Crush up 1-2mg of alprazolam, depending on bodyweight, and add to 1-shot Jack Daniels 40% liqueur. Stir for 2 min then take the shot. I find this to hit me faster and harder and if I am already laying in bed when it takes effect I pass out pretty quickly.

2. Crush up 1-2mg of alprazolam, depending on bodyweight, and add to 2-3mL of warm 1% or higher milk. Mix occasionally for 1-hour. Then draw into a 10mL oral syringe. This put this solution into the dark orifice of the body where the sun don't shine. This technique doesn't sound too appetizing but it hits you so fast and hard, a friend actually didn't remember moving from the bathroom to his bed but he woke up refreshed 9 hours later.

As for OTC remedies the only things I can suggest that has somewhat worked for me is a combination of 50mg Diphenhydramine (benadryl) and three tea bags of Sleepytime Extra Chamomile Tea from Celestial Seasonings. This worked ok, but probably not that much.

**Edit: I have also tried Seroquel but found it to be too full of side-effects including strange hallucinations when I woke up, and weird muscle spasms.

10mg of Ambien will get almost anyone a full nights sleep
 
I have tried every prescription and OTC substance in the USA. I too was on Ambien and quickly built a tolerance to it.

Previously, I was taking 2mg of Xanax 2 hours prior to bed time. I got to sleep but would awaken with too much of the drug still in my system. I now take 2-3 mgs. of clonazepam (generic for Klonopin) and do not wake up with the Xanax "hangover".

I find that the diphenhydramine HCL (antihistamine) based OTC meds. exacerbate my restlessness. Unisom manufactures an alternative that has worked fairly well for me in the past. I cannot recall the name of the active ingredient. It is the ingredient in the pill form, not the gel cap form.
 
I use Xanax. When I'm out, I take Pamelor or Diphenhydramine (benadryl). I only get hangovers from Valium or Klonopin. Any of the trycyclic antidepressants such as Pamelor, Elavil, Trazodone, etc.
 
I'd save the benzos for when I was trying to have fun personally.

As for the ambien comment, 30mg won't knock me out (much less 10). However, Trazadone knocks me out in 20-30 minutes max. When I was withdrawling I needed around 300-400mg for a full nights sleep even with it though. Now 100mg knocks me out, and I have friends that have to break the 100mg tabs in half or else they'll oversleep.

^^ So strange... sleep is definately a hard one to nail down. I find Trazadone, even in 200mg doses just make me fucked up and confused - I usually stay awake all night pissed off ;)

Zopiclone (like ambien) hit the spot for me. No tolerance developed with that one, but with xanax and such the tolerance made them useless after a week or two.
 
I'd second zopiclone. If your doctor will not prescribe a scheduled drug--as many will not, out of a need to cover their own asses--then ask for ramelteon (Rozerem). It is a new synthetic melatonin MT1/MT2 receptor agonist, but is not scheduled. Benzos, et al, are overkill for sleep and lose effectiveness as tolerance sets in. Besides, in the US, bezos will be C-II soon (e.g. they are already C-II in New York).

Where did you hear benzos will be C-2??

Aren't they c-4 now??

C-2 would make a alot more nervous about a customs letter...
 
I'm not about to waste any of my benzos to go to sleep.I think a few people mentioned trazadone,that shit is the best for sleep.

somebody gave me a supposed trazadone...it's a medium-sized, round, scored, white pill...says "pliva 433" on it

I tried to send a PM to Johnnyb420 regarding the New york issue.
It's kind of confusing but, if you read it carefully you will see:
Gov. Pataki made a state law (NY) that all C-II meds will be required to be written on a special type of prescription (that was probably already in place). What he did near the beginning of the year (2005) was to make the law apply to benzos also.
Scheduling of a drug (C-I, C-II, C-III, etc...) is a federal issue dealt w/ by the DEA/FDA. So, Mr. Pataki really couldn't change the scheduling of a drug, but he made it a state law that benzos (all benzos are still considered C-IV substances) would be an exception, in that they will also be required to use that special prescription (I don't live in NY- is it a triplicate prescription, as is common in other states?).

So, in short, benzos in the U.S. are still C-IV substances, but in NY (maybe more- I don't know about all of the states- just the one I currently practice in- IL), they are required to be written on the same type of prescription as the C-II substances, but are still C-IV by federal law.
Hope that clarified things a bit...kind of tricky, but you guys/gals can handle it...;)
 
I was prescribed Sonata but it stopped working... now I use Ambien, my new favorite. I never wake up groggy and it puts me into dreamy land within a half hour.

It's a 50mg trazodone generic.
 
I've had severe insomnia ever since 6th grade. I myself have come to accept it, and there really is nothing you can do about it. Becoming dependent on drugs just to sleep is about the worst thing you can do.

Melatonin is okay, probably best crushed up if you care to take the time, but you have to take it early as this shit makes you sleep extra hours. You'll find many substances, while helping you to sleep, really just make it so your body requires more sleep. A vicious cycle.

The solution for the insomniac? Binge sleeping. Get it all on weekends, and try hard to start your "Monday" off by getting enough sleep.

Or take multiple naps throughout the day. This is how I currently function.
 
That's the worst advice I've ever seen given on this forum.

Irregular sleep paterns are just that, irregular. They can be returned to coincide with society with a combination of lifestyle changes and medication at the onset. Try to get yourself into a sleep clinic if there's one nearby. That was one of the best things I'd ever done for my insomnia. The second best thing I've done is keeping a log of my day/eating habits/exercise/etc and seeing how that relates to sleep.
