Stimulants Weird D-amphetamine side effects :(

I have been prescribed Dexedrine(d-amphetamine) to treat my ADD condition. The dosage is 10mg in the morning and 5mg in the afternoon.

I have been quite flexible and only took the medicine when work had to be done. During the finals I would take 15mg/day for a month while on vacations I could discontinue use for months without any withdrawal symptoms.

After 2 years of use, for 3 months I am experiencing some weird side effects that...at least weren't as bad in the beginning. There is still the loss of appetite that hasn't changed but something is different now.

Symptoms:
After 10-15mg I feel an uncomfortable rib cage pressure from all directions, as if 50lb of weight were pressing against it especially in the heart region. The rib cage is very heavy and feels like it's collapsing over itself so I mostly breath through my belly unconsciously.

I feel like my ribcage is being sucked in and squeezing the internal organs inside. Aside from being uncomfortable, I notice a strange occasional pain in the heart area, a bit as if the rib cage was pressing in against it. The most severe heart pain occurred not more than 2ce, consisting of intense pain pulsations, a bit like needle pain palpitations.

It's like having a rope tightly wrapped around my ribs, just squeezing and squeezing. The regular use of coenzime Q10 seems to relieve the pain in the heart region but the ribcage isn't getting any better.

Anyone know what this is?

Sounds like you shouldn't be taking stimulants.. ask your doctor..

Or if you have these pains now.. maybe go to the hospital? :\

Probably nothing.. but chest pains are not something to ignore.

It's not a chest pain, I've had chest pains before. To feel what I feel try to breath in by expanding your rib cage really hard but don't allow any air to get in. That's exactly the feeling. It's like a pressure drop inside the ribcage that sucks it in.

I'd stop taking the dexies and ask your doctor for an alternative (ever tried methylphenidate?) 15mg's isn't a high dose, so it sounds like your body has some kind of intolerance to amphetamines. The dose you're taking really shouldn't be giving you those side effects.

Says who? Amphetamine doses vary greatly from person to person- some people are prescribed over 100mg a day while others respond just as well to 10mg. Anyway the thread starter should tell their doctor and stop taking it, not so hard...

I'm not a medical professional here, as I know chest pain can often times be pretty serious, I wouldn't want to steer anyone in the wrong direction.

Anyway, often times when I take amphetamines, I experience similar pain, more of a discomfort really in my chest. It doesn't occur with every use, but it's fairly common. The pain used to freak me out, as I jumped to the immediate conclusion that I was fucking my heart up. Then I tried taking a gas pill, and realized that all of these symptoms were gastric. After taking a gas pill I would feel immediately better, and since it has become the ritual whenever I take any stimulant. For reference sake, I take the Wal-Mart equate brand substitute for gas-x I believe. It'd be sweet if it were just that simple for you, but if not, like everyone else has said talk to your doc

yeah, try gasx, tums, etc I've had that before. It is usually compounded by the fact that you don't need to eat when you are on dex so the gas/acid just builds up in your stomach. Once you bloat up it can feel like your chest is being crushed

The pain/pressure can be caused by intestines (esp. large) full of air. Adderall + dairy/lactose does it to me.

if ur pills changed manufacturer, different binders (like lactose) may affect your body's rxn to the med.

Problems breathing could be caused by thickening of mucus in your lungs. I take an expectorant (guaifensen) with a glass of water which helps tremendously. (too much can cause diarrhea tho). Other causes of breathing probs are dehydration, smoking, and changes in the body's pH due to metabolic effects of Adderall.

Using Adderall and NSAIDs, esp. aspirin, together can cause asthmatic episodes in a very few people.

Only a Dr. can diagnose what, if anything, may be causing the discomfort you described. Please make an appointment.
