Okay people.. So this is something that has been REALLY bothering me as of late..

I've been a veteran pothead for about 5-6 years now, well, about 4 years down the line, I added something else into the mix known as Poppy Pod Tea which I stayed on for another 2 years in synchronization with the weed.

I recently abstained from both substances in early April of this year.. Suffered no physical withdrawls, couldn't sleep for about a month, but then sleep started to return and now i get a solid 7-8 hours a night.

So now that I'm completely sober from my previous Pod Tea opiate habbit & feeling fairly normal (bear in mind I don't even drink caffeine or use alcohol), i'd like to partake in that of a fine toke of marijuana..

So now, I've tried toking it about 4 times in the past 3 weeks or so, and every time I do, doesn't matter how early in the day, I'll then be up ALL night with barely any sleep whatsoever, just non-stop racing thoughts that despite breathing exercises etc, I cannot fall asleep after I take even a single hit of weed even in the early morning hours..

I find this to be incredibly odd due to the fact that Marijuana is known to have the opposite effects, for example, make the user sleepy..

I live a fairly sedentary lifestyle due to my job and I'm thinking maybe this could be the reason it's having such an effect on me.. Or maybe the fact that I might have had some permanent neuronal damage from the 2 years of Pod Tea use despite it being in extremely low dosages...

Can anyone shed any light on the subject? All my good friends do this and it seems like theres a bit of my life thats missing now.. In all honesty, it's not hard for me to abstain from this whatsoever.. But it used to be something I would enjoy and I would indeed like to enjoy it again..

I've been thinking of purchasing some online Salvia Divinorum, to perhaps try to do one of these hallucinogenic neuro-transmitter resets which have been documented not only on this site but abroad.. Maybe this could help things get to normal after a few uses..?

wow dude thats super intersting ive nver heard of that usually herb puts me to sleep and ive been smokin for about 4 years too, my guess is that since you havent smoked in a long time that the weed is having an effect on your sleep i remember when i first started smoking it used to keep me up, the salvia will cause hallucinations but i dont think it will put you to sleep, try to get some blue lotus flower tea thats supposed to cause a 24hr euphoria. id say try to drink that and see if you sleep, then try smoking a bowl and drinking some of that tea and gradually condition your body and mind to fall asleep after smoking herb.

It often depends on what kind of pot I have but often if I have really strong hydro it will keep me awake but if I have naturally grown stuff I can usually sleep. Weird hey.

INDICA is not SATIVA

no

Salvia is a different thing altogether, just because they are smoked doesn't mean the high will be the same. Salvia usually leaves me feeling super fucked and weird and sweaty, not exactly bedside shit.

I'm going to say you are smoking quality headies, which almost always makes me energetic for the first few hours, even with a big smoking tolerance. Mids or shwag, however, just makes me extremely groggy, which lets me fall asleep pretty easily. I'm guessing your tolerance is just low and weed is just blowing your mind again, that happens to me after a 3-week break all the time.

thanks for the responses guys...

and for the record, I'm not looking to replace salvia with weed, I've done it several times before and obviously it is a strong hallucinogen not even relatively comparable to marijuana.

Anyone have any other ideas of why pot might be keeping me up all night long?? I'm thinking it's more-so something neurological rather than the strain type...

secession from the tea with it? Did no one consider this? Your body is craving the opiates.

Is it possible its a very strong Sativa? Probably Outdoor? If i remember reading ur post earlier, didnt u say u took a break? If i took a break for a month or more, i could prob smoke some amazing od sativa and be high for 6 hours, there is no way in hell i'd be able to sleep

Or if its indoor and 100+day strain, by 100+days i mean the amount of flowering days, most commercial indoor strains are probably 50 or 60day, some being upwards of 80 or 90 for hazes and plants like strawberry cough.

When i was younger and didnt have such a tollerance, still in high school, i remember laying awake at night stoned outa my mind on strong sativa hybrids. I could never sleep and would just flop around. If these strains are harvested earlier they can induce strong paranoia and give a racey, almost speed like feeling.

It could be your brain chemistry re-adjusting from the PT addiction. (It rewires certain receptors like serotonin and dopamine I believe) 2 years is quite awhile to harbor an opiate addiction, I find it hard to believe you suffered no W/D at all? There must of been some discomfort or you have the magical brain! This deeply interests me.

Another possibility is that maybe now that opiates are not dulling your senses you may actually have an anxiety related disorder which would cause the racing mind and all no matter how much ganja you smoke. (I suffer from severe agoraphobic anxiety).

If I was in your shoes I would stay clean of all substances for awhile longer until your body finishes cleansing itself and try MJ again. Does this sleeping problem only happen when you smoke cannabis or when your sober as well?

On a side note, I find Sativa strains to keep my mind going if I smoke late in the day but what you mention sounds like the strain isn't the case. Keep us posted :)

Hey Hustler,

Yeah man, no physical WD's for me when it came to quitting the Pod Tea... Granted I was on literally a less than 1 Dried ground pod per day batch though which I've read is the equivalence of only 5-15mg of morphine depending on the pod (of course then you have all of your other opiods/alkaloids in the mix which can potentiate, but it's still quite a small dose comparable to most people taking down numerous pods per day..) I did experience a couple of days of diarrhea, but the only true "withdrawl" i can say i experienced was that of extreme mental discomfort, going from feeling real nice and regulated daily, to fairly depressed/anxious/less confident about life in general.

I do believe I have an anxiety disorder, as I typically will have racing thoughts nearly all day in a sober state of mind, but this never really stopped me from enjoying marijuana before as you said, 'dulling my mind with the opiates'.. I must say I even still had the racing mind while on the Pod tea, but it never really bothered me and I'd always get a nicely regulated 8 hours of sleep while on the mixture, and boy oh boy, the energy I had during that 2 year period was unreal, now I feel pretty lethargic, which once again could be my body re-adjusting, but given my low dosage of the pod brew, I'm starting to believe more and more that this isn't the case as I really haven't seen much of any improvement like most do.

As far as sleep is concerned, it all depends on how much I can tire myself out.. I usually still tend to exercise about 3 times a week (weightlifting), which I also did on the pods as well, but yeah, honestly, not too much trouble sleeping lately, ONLY when I use the weed. It does in fact induce that speed-like feeling that the other user on here suggested.

And i think I have to concur with you saying that my body may still be re-adjusting, it's just rather annoying because I've usually always been the 'motivated stoner' which has fueled a fairly successful career in music, and now that the weed is out of my life, it's QUITE the adjustment. Not trying to complain or anything, I'm the sole reason why things are the way they are and the choices were mine, just would like to start enjoying weed again which is a substance that has always been fairly synonymous with enjoyment in my life.

And for all of those who commented on the strain,

It's definitely not outdoor.. I ALWAYS smoke indoor.. On another note, I'm from the new england area and the stuff we get here always ROCKS people from the midwest..

Around here it goes by the name of kine-bud and is roughly 200-220 an oz (single oz price)... I've pretty much used this same bud year after year and it's always been a fairly nice mind/body high. We also have 'headies' and various exotics, but I've never taken too much of a liking towards these.

Have you tried taking something to help you fall asleep, like melatonin or a benzo?

Only two things that I can think of that might cause this.

First it could be the combination of a low tolerance to THC and really good bud, possibly a mostly sativa strain. However, even with that the high should only last 4 hours max.

The other cause may be that the weed was laced with some other kind of stimulant but this is very unlikely as long as you're buying from someone you trust.

Otherwise, it may just be the way that your body reacts to THC now and theres not really much you can do about it except keep trying.

Theres always the option of taking some benzos (xanax, valium, k-pins) or maybe some ambien to help you get some sleep at the end of the day. Valerian root is another natural OTC sleep aid that used to help me when I couldn't sleep but needed to.

Good luck with this and I hope you can once again join in on the enjoyment of cannabis.

Ah one pod a day explains why you didn't enter the real pod hell W/D, good for you for keeping it so low! Yup energy definitely came from my pod use, usually when the pods contained more "thebane" which is used to synthesize oxycodone--thebane by itself is quite stimulating and will keep you up all night along with the "itch".

It does sound like anxiety is playing a roll somewhere here, I self medicated with pods to kill my anxiety and it worked wonders but at a very steep price. Sometimes I still had racing thoughts like you said, but I think the pods were of mediocre quality during those times.

By the way it's great you are weightlifting, that produces natural edorphins (the bodys natural opiate) and will relieve craving and W/D for awhile after a nice workout and take care of the RLS at night most likely. It does take awhile to leave your system (sometimes months) so do not get discouraged, you are still on the path to recovery!

What I am currently doing is seeing a therapist and attending cognitive behavioral therapy for my anxiety and the kratom is helping me make so much progress- I thought I would never make any steps in the right direction but things are slowly changing!

When you feel comfortable with cannabis again try smoking an indica mid afternoon and see if that will quell your need for sleep. Once again I wish you the best of luck and if you need any support don't hesitate to reach out, I've been down that road of W/D more times than I care to mention.

Some people can't fall asleep while high. When I used to use I never could fall asleep while high after smoking even the most potent Indicas, and the only time it did happen was when I accidentally ate too much herb and passed out.

Also Sativas have a tendency to make one more energetic.

OP: When I smoke now after quitting for about 7-8 months the same thing happens to me every now and then. Not necessarily racing thoughts, but I get practically no sleep when I smoke now.

I've linked it to a psychosomatic (am I using that right? Not really sure, it just seemed to fit =D) issue... I look at being high as one of the greatest uses of my "downtime," and when I'm asleep the only thing I get out of being high is some pretty sweet, movie-like dreams that I forget about 5 minutes after waking up. Short and simple, I view passing out after smoking bud to be a waste of time, money, and drugs.

Even when I'm dead ass tired that thought of falling asleep and wasting the the awesome feeling I have going on keeps me awake, even if it's a subconscious thought at the time. It's not like I'm thinking the whole time while I'm high that "Dude, I have to stay high no matter what!" but I definitely like to get my money's worth and not waste my time on the rare occasions that I do smoke these days.

I don't know if this is what's going on with you because apparently my drug counselors pegged me as one of those rare people who get so psychologically addicted to pot that it seemed to the "experts" as a physical addiction. :|

Maybe smoking at night just isn't for you?
