In an igloo made of asbestos and chicken-wire.
After having issues for a while about whether I should move out of my dumb flat or get someone to move in to my dumb flat...meeting psychos and generally odd people while looking for a place etc etc, I've found a warehouse to live in with 4 guys YAY!!

Now I want to totally refurbish my room from scratch...I'm gonna build a loft for my bed, buy lots of cool furnitures and suchlike...

Does anyone know where I can find cool cheap furniture and making-room-look-cool accessories? Preferrably around the collingwood area? I've always had boring practical furniture until it falls apart and have decided, fuck it, I wanna go a bit crazy...lava lamps, shag pile rug, that kinda thing...the more out there the better.

Suggestions begin.....NOW! =D

ikea is your friend.

cheap. modern. trending. a yuppies paradise.

their new store jsut opened in richmond..not far away from collingwood.

there are a few furniture shops on smith st near gertrude street which have cool furniture and accessories....try them.

^^^^^^nooooooo...I don't wanna be no yuppie... :(

I don't want nice inoffensive stuff, I want the kind of things that people love cause it's out there or hate cause it's trash and should have been burned at conception....

Thanks for the non-Ikea suggestion tho nezo, I'll have me a look around the local area and stop being so damn lazy... ;)

woo hoo!!! a warehouse with a loft would be so cool...go to the op shops like salvos and vinnies etc and then go to material shops like spotlight and what not and just cover EVERYTHING IN FAKE FUR!!!!! woot!!

well ummm i really like fake fur so thats what id do 8)

OP shops have some pretty sweet stuff if you look around very retroish but also very modern if you work with it IMO and damn cheap to.

Ey matey my WHOLE newly finished room is all IKEA stuff, cheap, easy to assemble, modern, sturdy and different to anything else you'll find. Give IKEA a go I'm sure you'll find something very nice :) and if your anything like me you'll leave with heaps of shit that wont even fit in your room and is left to catch dust in the garage cos it's so damn nice and you just have to have it 8(

be generous with candles and cool candle holders

use, but be modest with, old christmas lights, like wrap them around the canopy on canopy beds, etc. cheap, specailly at this time of year, and they look great if used well.

random bits of fabric. if you find a large empty piece of plaster, be it on the roof or the wall, and it just looks so empty and forlorn, go to spotlight and buy a big piece of some cool fabrik, dark colors work best, reds, greens, but patterned or itll look just as boring, and use pins to stick it up.. roofs, walls, hanings in both top corners of a doorway... it can work wonders... just dont stick it to roofs flat, billow it a bit,, use your imagination and im sure itll look great

hope that wasn't sarcasm!

anyway, ikea does rock ! You can pick up heaps of really good looking items there, which wont break your wallet either.

OK if you don't want to do ikea (or want a mix of old and new stuf) i recommend the Junk Shop in North Melbourne. Its on Elizabeth street, a few blocks up from the Vic Market (away from the city) on the same side as the market. Heaps of cool furniture and bits and pieces and generally pretty cheap - just make sure you check out upstairs.

Auction houses, there's lots of them around just look in the daily papers. Make the time to check out the stuff before the day of the action and make lots of notes as to what it is, its auction number and how much you think its worth - sometimes you can't actually see what you are bidding for on the day. Its heaps fun to bid for your new funky furniture too!

The shop on the corner of Alexandra Prd & Wellington Street, Clifton Hill, havn't been in for a while but i've nearly crashed my car several time gawking at what they have in the window - so very very cool!

Salvation Army Stores - the one in Victoria Cresent in Abbotsford or the one in Victoria St Richmond are both worth a look. If you are ever find yourself in a country town or sticksville, check out their op shops - thats where i've found my best things.

A big airport hanger out past Frankston, yes its a hella of a trip, but they have the coolest stuff ever - think old red phone boxes, very funky art deco couches, bars and the like. Literally a whole airport hanger of the stuff and really cheap prices. I'll try and track down the addy and ph # for you.

Can you tell i'm a op shop and second hand store freak?

=D

walking around the neighbourhood on trash day has its up sides... urine soaked couches everywhere.. what a goldmine (pardon the pun)....

Our old warehouse still has several couches, desks, oven, about 80 milkcrates (the poor mans modular furniture), a fridge... All we just had to leave behind when we bailed. The logistics and ownership issues were too difficult to resolve.

When the novelty wears off and it turns into a (freezing in wintertime) skankhole, and it will... Remember that you have to move all the shit back out again ;)

but thoth...we didn't move all the shit back out :D

con keeps asking for my address everytime i call him now :|
(note to future warehouse dwellers: dont rent it off a mafia don)

ermm a) if your in melbourne and b) if you've got a truck and c) if you feel like doing late night missions then i think theres still 3 big road barriers, shiteload of cable reels, a few couches, a sink, stovetop, fridge, kitchen bench, ed's skanky smell and moz's moaning all still in or out the front of our old place.

you prolly dont want moz's moaning tho ;)

Aquire a crowbar and someone schooled in the art of burglary and go sick.

;)

yeah and if you visit the old HDP warehouse don't breathe in the dust. you won't sleep for weeks!

rbb: did rabbi ever find his dog?

DQ: he railed it...
he had to roll up the MUFF (mutual up fucked fund) constitution just to get it up there! ;)

RBB: if you look at the wall to the left it looks like a mild mushroom hallucination. vague swirling colours. i think we rubbed off on the place:p

-Thoth: ive looked at that photo a million times and ive only just noticed you faithfully toiling away at your comp. did you ever get up the whole time you were there dude? ;)

ahhh memories:) it bites not having a clubhouse anymore...then again i didnt haveta live there:p

viva la warehouse!!!

The photo isn't detailed enough to show the icicles hanging from my nose. Seriously, sometimes it was so cold, it felt decidedly eastern bloc. But hey, it still carries a special place in the heart. Somwhat worrying about con though, rbb... I hopefully none of my forwading address mails are still kicking around 8o

being a bit of a weirdo, the idea of a warehouse kinda appeals to me too but i have *no* idea as to how to go about looking for them...or...well...anything. are there any bluelight posts or websites or *anything* that would be helpful in that kinda info?

sorry for hijacking the thread :)

didnt you read what they said 1234??

imagine.. youd get numb feet from walking around with no shoes

it'd be cool... but the coolness would wear off :)

no it's REALLY cool! Putting up with the cold floor and the odd slugs and spiders that find their way in is worth it, it just feels way more uninhibited than living in a house...like if I wanna cover my wall in paint or photos or knock some bricks out to make impromptu wall planters I can do it to my hearts' content! :D

Oh, and the thread's kind of been hijacked into a "How cool are warehouses" deal, but I wanted to say a huge THANKS to everyone who actually had a practical suggestion for where I can get furniture and stuff..

1234, if you're still looking for a place when you come to melbourne, gimme a yell...apparently people move in and out of this place a fair bit so there might be a room by the time you're down here...

--Raz--

hmm...i *do* live in melbourne though. anyways, i should come visit sometime :D unless you're worried that i might rape your women and pillage your village...warehouse...or something.

anyway, i'm always in the city, so it *would* be cool to check it out - don't worry about me being all *let me move in* and stuff, i'm still on a lease at my current place, so if you think i'm a cockhead, you can quite easily forget about me by the time i even think about moving =D

pm me or something if you're interested in giving me a look at your warehousey place :)
