Hello all.
I searched the forums for posts about this drug, but only found one in ADD about it.
My brother was recently prescribed this drug (in addition to his usual lorazapam), which has the trade name of Viibryd, and generic of Vilazodone. From what I can gather it is a relatively new SSRI-type medicine.
It is interesting and different from a lot of SSRIs in a way. This is because it is said to affect the 5-HT1A receptors. In case others are unfamiliar with this receptor, drugs like LSD, MDMA, 5-MeO-DMT, etc are drugs that use it as well.
Interestingly, Trazodone uses this receptor as well. Perhaps there's no connection between the two, but they certainly have similar sounding names.
Can anyone comment on this new drug, Vilazodone? I know that it's pretty common to read "horror" stories about SSRIs and other drugs like it, but I assume thats because more people would rather post about a negative experience than if they've had a good one.
Thanks for any information. I'm highly interested in this substance, and my brother is too, since he's the one who is going to actually be taking it, haha.

Since it is pretty new I don't think there will be many responses.

What is the reason he was given it?

What are the possible side effects?

Did the dr say anything unusual about the drug?

Vilazodone is a 5-HT1a agonist and an SSRI.

It's nothing new or interesting - you could get the same thing from combining Buspirone (anti-anxiety med, 5-HT1a agonist) or Trazodone with any other SSRI. As for if 5-HT1a agonists do anything or not, some people say they work great and for some people they do absolutely nothing, pretty hit and miss from what I can see. I take trazodone every night for sleep and it hasn't done anything but make me fall asleep. (although i'm not sure if this is because I don't respond to 5-HT1a agonists or if 150mg isn't enough to actually do much, people taking trazodone for depression take 400-600 a night)
