It was released in a shocking state (barely hanging together really) but if you patch it it should be OK. It does need quite a beefy system to run well.

It's a fucking amazing game though, I have to say. :)

Atmospherically it's perhaps the best game that I've ever played - bleak as fuck & scary as hell in places too. =D Best PC game since Half-Life 2 imo.

i played the game unpatched and it still kicked ass.

The movie is awesome too.

Multiplayer without CD key?

BTW try not to broadcast the fact that you didn't purchase the game. At least pretend you screwed up your game disc.

Stalker

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, previously known as S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Oblivion Lost, is a first-person shooter computer game by Ukrainian developer GSC Game World, published in 2007.

It features an alternate reality theme, where a second nuclear disaster occurs at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the near future and causes strange changes in the area around it. The game has a non-linear storyline and features gameplay elements such as trading and two-way communication with NPCs. The game includes elements of role-playing and business simulation games.

The background idea and some terminology of the game ("The Zone", "Stalker") is borrowed from the popular science fiction book Roadside Picnic by Boris and Arkady Strugatsky and the 1979 film Stalker by Andrei Tarkovsky, loosely based on the book.

In S.T.A.L.K.E.R., the player assumes the identity of an amnesiac "Stalker", an illegal explorer/artifact scavenger in "The Zone", named 'The Marked One'. "The Zone" is the location of an alternate reality version of the Chernobyl Power Plant after its second (fictitious) explosion, which contaminated the surrounding area with radiation and caused strange otherworldly changes in local fauna, flora and even the laws of physics. "Stalker" in its original (film) context roughly meant "explorer" or "guide", as the stalker's goal was to bring (guide) people into the Zone.

Anybody else play this game? A lot of people were talking about in the video game section of another website I frequent and curiosity eventually got the best of me. I downloaded it and its fucking amazing. I started playing around Midnight and when I looked at the time it was already 6 in the morning. This game is fresh take on the first person shooter genre. It's almost like Oblivion but with guns, more atmosphere, a better AI, and a post apocalyptic setting. I recommend this game. It has a step learning curve the first few missions, but after that shit gets fun.

The are releasing a followup called Clear Sky this August. The graphics are amazing and they did a complete overall on everything.

Yeah, I loved that game, let a friend borrow it after I beat it, and haven't seen it since. The last part of the game is so fuckin hard. I love the atmoshpere that it portrays.

the game has a nice rendering of pripyat (the city closest to the chernobyl reactor) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pripyat,_Ukraine . there are a group of people who go out there and play STALKER for real, in pripyat (since it's abandoned and all, may as well) but i dont know the details. i would imagine they use airsoft guns instead of real ones...

That is freaking awesome. Do want.

I loathed it, felt so shallow after a while. Was really looking forward to it prior to the release. I found the fact that there is not a single woman in the game fucking weird, completely male dominated atmosphere was lame IMO.

Played and beat the vanilla game. Now I'm going to try it with the Oblivion Lost 2.1 mod and see how good this game really is.
