^^ Leveling/gearing in WoW is not the only way it has to be.
WoW is completely dependent on raiding and the pretend PvP it has.
Seriously, you have no idea how much you're missing out on in terms of MMO experience by playing WoW. Not that there's anything better out at the moment but hopefully either AoC or Warhammer will figure it out.
I can't wait for another MMO that doesn't "instance" anything, has shitloads of useful gear for all level ranges that drops in regular dungeon runs and from rare spawns, and real PvP with penalties for dying like losing money or one item or whatever.
Oh and coming from an MMO veteran if you're interested in AoC I'd suggest waiting about a month after release and then reading some forums dedicated to it. This will give you the best review of the game and prevent you from buying a completely worthless game. There have been a lot of MMO launches in the past where the game is practically unplayable due to all the bugs and it has no content past level 20, etc. Avoid getting screwed by purchasing one of these half finished games by letting someone else buy it first.
All MMOs launch with lots of bugs but there is a difference between the ones where people keep logging back in for those 5 minutes of playing before they crash and the ones where people decide to simply never login again. You can look for that difference in the forums.
