JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Today, in a class-action lawsuit brought by the ACLU and the ACLU of Eastern Missouri, a federal district court told a Missouri college to end its unconstitutional program of requiring all of its students—irrespective of their course of study—to submit to suspicionless drug-testing. Jason Williamson, staff attorney at the ACLU's Criminal Law Reform Project, and co-counsel on the case, said:

"Linn State required every incoming student to be tested for drugs, even though many of them would not be engaged in dangerous activities, and the college had no reason to believe any particular student was using drugs. Any student who refused to submit to the drug test—which is considered a search under the Fourth Amendment—would be denied the opportunity to pursue their education at Linn State.

"Students should not be required to sacrifice their constitutional rights in order to further their education, and we're thrilled that the court has struck down the policy. Our victory should serve as a warning to colleges and universities across the country: mandatory, suspicionless drug testing of the entire student body has no place in education.”

I think making students test for drugs is more radical than making employees test because students pay to go to school, so if they fail its more their loss than anyone else's, whereas working a job has society directly depend on your production. Since I don't think drug testing should be a requirement for jobs, because not all drugs are given equal consideration (for instance, alcohol can be as dangerous as heroin), I don't see any light in siding with Linn State on the issue.

The college students only obligation to the school is to study, pure and simple. What their pupils choose to do in their own time is their own fucking business; this is the grossest invasion of privacy I've heard in a long time. Drug testing on a large scale is expensive; the fact that a college would choose to spend their resources on this, rather than ensuring a higher standard of education for their pupils, really shows how twisted and irrational their priorities are. Insane.

I'm sure Linn State gets all the elite students in Mo. Who with half a brain would even think of going to such a place lol? Should be called the Preparatory Institute for a Life of Subservient Mediocrity.
