Hi All,

I've been going through a whole load of crap to do with work, so went to an out of hours doctor's surgery yesterday.

They gave me 16mg of diazepam in total, to see me through until I see my normal doctor on Monday ( 8 of 2mg pills)

I don't normally take diazepam, but with just 4mg of it left and feeling panic attacks now, I wondered if plugging it would be more effective than just taking it orally?

I want relief from the horrible anxiety I'm feeling right now

All help appreciated chaps

No, eating it is the most effective, and will last longer than any other route you take it.

Thanks RTrain - why is that the case when plugging something like codeine makes it much more effective?

go look up bio availabilities or the term bio availability

every med has a BA. the BA is how much of the drug u consumed is actually used by the body instead of just passing it back out.

example: morphine has a 30% BA orally, but 100% BA when IV. this means that 70% of the morphine u orally consume will be wasted and just passed back out, and only 30% is actually effective. so if u were to take 10 mgs morphine orally, it would equal out to about 3 mgs IV and thats because of the BA. rectally morphine has a much higher BA than oral. So people plug it to get more out of it without having to shoot up. (thats why the hospitals typically use 4 mg doses of IV morphine, its close to the 10 mg oral mark which is a common dose. but now alot of hospitals use hydromorphone/diluadid and that is much stronger, only 1mg doses usually for opiate naive patients in moderately severe pain)

Diazepam has a very high oral BA % which means you should just take it ORALLY!! there is no gain in plugging something that already has a high BA orally.

Same thing with Xanax... people who snort it are actually wasting part of it. its BA is just too high orally for any other route to make sense. only difference would be time of onset. same with the old oxy's too. i tried to tell people too and they thought i was crazy.

hope that made sense.

Hi Slum Survivor - that makes perfect sense, thank you for taking the time to explain that so articulately :) Oral route it is.

Thanks again guys

n/p PaulAtreides u can ask anything within the rules here in the forum. i learned a good deal from these boards. i wish u luck with your anxiety.

im in the usa and im having trouble keeping my klonopin script. ugh. so stupid. i hate my dr office. its one with all the little student dr's. one puts me on clonazepam, the next tries to tell me that i shouldnt have took them, and that the other dr didnt say what they did.... so dumb.

so yeah i feel ya on making what u have last. not to get high, but because u have anxiety and need it. grrr...

Good job, SlumSurvivor, and you spared BL one of my wordy posts about BA.

I also can relate to your situation with baby doctors saying, "No, take THIS!" Just learned that my primary care physician is closing his practice for medical reasons (his own) at the end of this year. Selfishly, while I do wish him all the best and a happy healthy retirement, I DREAD finding a new physician and having to explain why in great detail exactly why I am on two antidepressants, an anti-psychotic, and the Xanax currently prescribed by Dr. Bye-Bye. Makes me feel like quite the b*tch...
