Third Reich distributed amphetamines (including methamphetamine) to its soldiers widely during WWII, and Hitler was actually a big tweaker back then, many experts now think that his daily use of methamphetamine and amphetamine contributed to his mental decline towards the end of the war. The Nazi's eventually invented a megadrug for enhancing soldier's performance called D-IX, which was a pill that contained 5mg Oxycodone, 5mg cocaine, and 3mg methamphetamine. Test subjects were reported to be able to march 55 miles without rest while carrying 20 kilograms of gear before the collapsed from exhaustion.
Karl Marx' quote "religion is the opiate of the masses" alluded to the British Empire's use of opium dens to subdue rebellion in China during its colonization. British quickly figured out that not only did the opium decrease motivation for social change among chinese population, it also gave the British a way to get even more money from China. Not surprisingly, that influenced Chinese drug policy thereafter and China's drug laws remain among the harshest to this day.
" Evidence for the consumption of cannabis has also been found in Egyptian mummies dated about 950 BC."
"A study published in the South African Journal of Science showed that "pipes dug up from the garden of Shakespeare's home in Stratford-upon-Avon contain traces of cannabis."[127] The chemical analysis was carried out after researchers hypothesized that the "noted weed" mentioned in Sonnet 76 and the "journey in my head" from Sonnet 27 could be references to cannabis and the use thereof."
"Archaeological evidence indicates the use of psilocybin-containing mushrooms since ancient times. Several mesolithic rock paintings from Tassili n'Ajjer (a prehistoric North African site identified with the Capsian culture) have been identified by author John S. Ashley as possibly depicting the shamanic use of mushrooms, possibly Psilocybe"
