Unpleasant OBE

Had a very strange experience last night. I had been asleep for maybe an hour when I slipped into one of those half-awake states. I felt extremely uncomfortable and felt myself slowly get up. I nearly made it to the door before I realized I was still in bed. While this was happening I felt dizzy, nauseated, and confused. I made a second attempt to make it to the hallway, simply because I felt the need to. I remember opening the door and thinking for sure I was about to collapse. Then I snapped back into bed and remained completely paralyzed. I want to stress that I must have been more awake than asleep, since I knew I wasn't actually moving. It took a lot of effort to convince my body to move, and when it finally did I didn't feel much better. I've had an OBE before but there was nothing enjoyable or enriching about this experience at all. Anyone else have a similar episode?

Sounds like what you experienced might have been a hypnagogic experience (or hypnopomp). These are quite common, actually, although they can be very unpleasant.

Hi Virgjc, I am an experienced oneironaut. What you experienced is "Sleep paralysis". It is caused because your body releases a chemical when your sleep to keep you paralysed so you do not act out your dream!! Forgive me I do not know the chemical/hormone. This is completely natural :)

Damn right! I was going to say that if he finds it easy to get into a sleep paralysis state he should seriously consider learning to Lucid dream and Astral project, he has a massive advantage over any newcomer if this is true!
