dont go for anything less than the Technics 1210's...everything else is merely an imitation..

you can pick up second hand sets, often with a mixer for a little more than a brand new pair of mid range tables......its worth saving the extra cash, as youll soon reach a point where you cant learn anthing new on a set of belt drives or weak DD's...
Best of luck!

I'm gonna tell you the same thing everyone told me- get a pair of technic sl-1200's. they arn't cheap (about $440/each new) I didn't listen and went and wasted a lot of money buying different cheap ass tables and ended up spending more then I probably would have on the 1200's. But since you're probably like me (broke) you could start out on something cheaper. If you are just looking for something to fool around with every now and then you should check out the Gemini PT-1000 or atleat the XL-500. The XL-500's come in Gemini's scratchmaster kit but the mixer is shitty. Your best bet would be to search the web and try to find some used SL-1200's though. Hope this helped!

I dont confess to knowing everything about DJing, but when I first started, I was on a friends beltdriven junkers, but with a decent mixer. I used these about 3 times before he got hold of a pair of 1210 direct drive decks. You know what, being as new to it as I was, I hardly picked the difference. Can pick it now, but i've played around with decks a little more now.
They also lost their good mixer and were forced to use a basic mixer for a little while and it was still a shit load of fun.
Point being, Tecnics decks are the shit. But to start out with, especially if you haven't mixed before, a DJ starter kit or some second hand decks will do you for 6 months or so. After that time, you'll know if you like doing it and you can upgrade, or sell and get out. With the money saved first up, you can buy some good tracks. No point having the top gear if you have no records to mix. Get someone in the know to check them over before you buy if they are second hand.
In a perfect world with pockets full of cash, knock yourself out. If not, start out small. If you can learn to mix well on shitty belt driven decks, you'll be cutting up when you move on to good direct drives.

Well, first off I have to agree with the others and say that if you're serious about DJing, you need Technics. That said, you definitely don't need to start out on Technics. I started out on one old belt-drive and one old direct-drive (a friend's), and a couple months ago I purchased two Numark TT-1910s (Direct Drive). Personally, I love the Numarks and, although they're not quite as precise as the 1200s, they're pretty close, especially for less than half the price ($200 each). So I'd say if you want to get started right away, get the Numarks and then save up for the 12s. Mixer-wise you don't need to spend more than $150 tops, unless you want a lot of extras like effects and stuff. You can get a decent Numark or Gemini mixer for around $120. Hope this helps.

Amy,
I have an older technics 1200 that i can sell you if you like. I have another two that i am keeping..the 1200 needs a few inexpensive parts like the pop up light bulb, an armrest. Other than that, it's got a few lil wear and tear scratches, but it was just professionally tuned and cleaned inside. Runs very precise as people will tell you about technics stuff. It's a direct drive, which is the only way you want to go.If you're interested, email me at [email protected] and i will let you know what i will sell it for. Good luck and take care.

Well, my advice to you is to start out small and work your way up. At least, that's what I'm doing. I've been interested in getting equipment for a good year and half now, but haven't been able to save up enough money. Everytime I try, somethign else comes up, so there goes that for a couple months.
Anyways, if you're just starting out, why do you want to go whole hog? Say you don't liek it (it's a possibility I'm aware of. I'm musically trained and have a good ear, but my skills might not be any good), you're stuck with very good equipment. Now, anyone will buy technics off of you, but no one I know pays any where near the purchase price for used ones.
But if you start out small (but not at the bottom), and work your way up, it'll be for the ebst. And if you decide you don't liek it, you can sell it all to a beginner for close to what you payed.
There are two kits available, a gemini and a numark. I'm personally saving up for the numark BATTLE PACK (not the DJ IN A BOX). Has 2 DD's with cartridges, slipmats etc (these dd tables aren't the professionals, but still cost 250 a piece), a better than average starting mixer (with kill switches and gain controls to boot!), cables, speakers, and really cool headphones, for 500 bucks.
there's a gemini one called dj battle kit (all i remember is it had a similar name to the above), which is essentially the same thing only in gemini. mixer isn't as good, but i suspect the tables might be a little better than numark's. plus comes with a video and hat. no headphones. Same price.

Thank you guys for all of the info., I really do appreciate it. I will let you know when I purchase some. Thanks again

I would just like to add...I myself am looking for a set of tables and a mixer at the present as well...Preferably technic 1200's, but will also consider 1210's and either a technic or vestax mixer...Im in the NYC area and if anyone can help me please email me at [email protected] that thats out of the way id just like to say that it is true that technic 1200s may be more expensive than Gemini XL-100s...and a vestax mixer might be double the price than that of a basic gemini mixer...But if youre gonna be spinning for the love of turntablism then you should hold out till you find a good price on a used or new pair of technics...Why, you might ask...well if youre seriously gonna be in it for the art and not to look cool in front of your friends or to "blow up" into commercialism then for heavens sake hold out for the technics that will last your forever rather than a pair of gemini tables that will prolly lock-up before a year passes by...For more info go to Http://www.turntablism.com or Http://www.1200s.com...

If you're really serious, 1200's are a must... SL-1200mk2's can be found for about $450 each, the new mk3's are about $500 each. An EXCELLENT starting mixer is the Numark DM-2002X. Has everything that someone starting will need... If you can't or don't want to throw down the $900-1000 for the 1200's, Gemini XL-500's are prolly the next step down, then Numark TT1910's (ick). Avoid belt-drive tables at all costs. As for needles, I'm personally partial to Stanton Groovemaster's, but that's just me. I can't stand Otrofon's, they're way overpriced and aren't much better than Groovemasters.

Critics have told me I've ruined the lives of 50 million young people.
I can't be certain of this, since only about 10 million have ever come back to thank me.

pacman had the best pointer for ya, there is no reason to have nice tables if ya got no vinal to spin. One of my friend went out and bought some 1200's with a nice numark mixer but he only had like 8 records! If you know someone that has tables now you should just buy some vinal and practice on their tables until you get the hang of it, then when you're ready to buy tables you'll have some vinal and know how to spin then you won't have to be worried about spending all the loot on the 1200's.
