Tramadol or Oxy for pain relief?

After a major operation on my leg following an accident, ive been using Oxy (10-30mgs, depending on if I use Endone [IR] or Targin [XR]) to help cope with pain from my rehabilitation and also because I enjoy the effects and good night sleep that amount gives me. (Why not right?)
So Ive recently been to my doc, to get more meds to help me with the pain.
He was going to prescribe me Tramadol (unsure of amount or strength) untill I assured him that endone had been working fine and would just like to just get another box of them.
I was wondering if I should of kept my mouth shut and went with the Tramadol instead of Endone because I know next to nothing about the first option?
Which would be better? Not only for recreational value because I need something to keep my leg pains at minimum, but as an overall pain relief/sedative drug?
I could easily ask for either on my next visit as I haven't been abusing anything (dont plan too) and have a good relationship with my doc.
Anyone have knowledge or experience in these substances?

Tramadol is not a very recreational drug, and it's also not that great for pain. Oxycodone is much better all round IMO.

Cool thanks for reply, sounds like I might have said the right things then. Oxy has been working ok for my pain and apart from slight nausea sometimes who doesn't like it's effects, hence why I wanted another script of it and not an unknown drug. Was just hoping I hadn't turned down something better.
Is Endone my best option or could I ask for something better/more effective?

Agree with opi8, and in addition, tramadol is a complex drug from a pharmacological standpoint. It has SNRI action (like some anti-depressants) which can clash with other medications or drugs you take. It also has a unique withdrawal which is way out of proportion to its analgesic effects. The withdrawal from tramadol can be extremely unpleasant and can 'mess with you head' more than a mono-effect opioid like oxy.

Finally, there is an unpredictable seizure risk attached to tramadol, further setting it apart from other opioids. Different people have very different reactions to tramadol both in terms of it's painkilling properties and it's ability to make you feel good. A minority of people love it and claim it gives them a powerful and unique high, but most people find it a weak painkiller compared to other opioids/opiates, and again, there is a remote but possible risk of seizure - even within the therapeutic dose range.

Sounds like you've done the right thing by just sticking with what works. I think most people would rather take oxy than tramadol for pain or recreation.

Cheers for that information, makes me wonder why the doc wanted to prescribe it in the first place.
Anyway good thing I went with the usual

It's considered less abusable than other opiods, which is true. WRT something stronger should you need it for adequate pain relief, Endone only come in 5mg preparations, the next instant release formulation would probably be OxyNorm which come in 10mg and 20mg that I've seen. There is also OxyContin in higher doses, up to 80mg which is an extended release tablet primarily used for constant baseline pain, while the instant release medicines are usually for "break through" pain, or less frequent pain. There are many, many other potential medicines but those two are probably your best bet if you intend to swallow them.

Tramadol is rat poison. Gives me full blown seizures. Crap is a distant analogue of opiates and a shitty one at that. Your Doc is trying to "wean" you of the S8's and replace them with crappy S4 medication so he doesn't need to do an authority script and all the other BS that goes with S8 drugs for pain management. Tell him the tramal gives you the shakes from 50 mg and it feel's like you might have a fit. Fuck tramadol.

He seemed happy to write out another script of Endone in the end anyway. But if he does try to change the medication to Tramadol (which seems pretty shitty from the impression you guys give) I guess ill tell him that. I seen a specialist today for a routine appointment, i asked and he was good for another pack off Endone too. Wasn't keen to prescribe anything stronger tho :(
But can't complain too much
