could dreams be our soul(only word i could think of) running through our memory and thoughts? without thought upon what to think about it randomly cruises through our experiences. those thoughts thought upon more frequently in daily life are more prevalent in dreams, but those thoughts not brought upon by our conscious mind recently still time to time get in them because they are in are brain recording device. it explains why dreams are a random story, IMO random experiences we have undertaken. our soul cant technically(unless death?) stop so it has to do something when we dont need to choose what to think about. just a theory..

read some freud. dreams aren't as random as they seem.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dream_interpretation#Freud

pay particular attention to these concepts
The operations included:

Condensation – one dream object stands for several associations and ideas; thus "dreams are brief, meagre and laconic in comparison with the range and wealth of the dream-thoughts."
Displacement – a dream object's emotional significance is separated from its real object or content and attached to an entirely different one that does not raise the censor's suspicions.
Representation – a thought is translated to visual images.
Symbolism – a symbol replaces an action, person, or idea.

I believe the brain could be described as a powerful horse.
Being awake is like holding the reigns n directing consciousness.
Being asleep would be like letting those reigns go n having the horse wander.
N this horse (brain) is so powerful, its capable of producing its own route (reality).
Makes good sense right??

hewhohowls, that makes a lot of sense and is a good summarization of what im trying to say, but proves someone is on that horse, whether its being directed by reality or just free running.

L2R, Freud puts a lot of good points, but many people are different on how they see their so called wishes. being aware of the wish you want puts you in a whole different catagory of people, even if reality wont let that wish happen.

Wether it is being directed or just free-running proves that there doesn't have to be someone on that horse, but that the horse is sufficient in "running intself".

unless their is a function of survival, or some benefit( not saying their isnt), why would it keep running when you sleep?

If you want to go further in Lacan, Dreams, as well as jokes, Freudian slips, are effects of the unconscious...condensation and displacement representing respectively the metonymic and metaphoric effects of the unconscious, being "structured like a language". In the end, "the dream is a rebus".
