Hey, (Man)

You guys fucking sleeping out there or something? We can't fucking hear you man! (bonus points for telling me what live song that introduced :D)

Seriously though, are you? Why is there no Metallica thread...

I've been a fan of Metallica for over 11 years now. Mostly, I just loved the Black Album but other songs here & there. Recently though I started listening to their early stuff & I've just been blown away. Also watched Through the Never & Cunning Stunts, which was amazing. The Bass/Guitar Doodle into Nothing Else Matters is probably my favourite live performance of any band ever:

I've also been reading Mick Wall's Biography of them, Metallica: Enter Night:

Great read so far... very well written too. Highlight of the book so far (1/3rd through) is reading about Lars Ulrich's upbringing & early years, very amusing.

I know a lot of people think Metallica sold out, it varies with each person... some people think they sold out with Ride the Lightning, others Master of Puppets but most the Black Album & most others Load/Reload.

Personally I think that's BS... Metallica have just evolved over the years. That's why they are still so popular even today. The reason I love Metallica so much is their musicality & that really shone through with the Black Album although it could be seen as early as Ride the Lightning.

So, what's your favourite song? Mines would be Nothing Else Matters & the song surreptitiously referred to at the top of this post, although I rate lots of their songs highly to be fair!

Metallica made epic albums up until the fourth or fifth one... kill 'em all is a fucking masterpiece, violent and raw trash fucking metal.
I can't decide if the album I like the most is kill em or Master of Puppets... every song frkm that album is badass even the least known (maybe a bit underrated) ones like leper messiah and disposable heroes.

the last albums well, you said they evolved I say they sold themselves out to the mainstream after Cliff Burton died (the song anesthesia pulling teeth gives me chills, RIP).. seriously how can you compare the early stuff which was Amazing and badass with the last albums and say the "evolved"? evolution implies a change for the better or atleast equally good IMHO, but de gustibus non disputandum...

have you ever listened to Lulu? (to be clear I'm talking about the album with Lou Reed where James finally reveals that he is indeed the table)

Pffft... FG you naysayer! Dave Mustaine might have been an early member of Metallica but that has no place here! 8)

de gustibus non disputandum

Well said.

Kill 'Em All is epic. I never expected it to be as good as it was until I listened to it. In terms of their early stuff - Master of Puppets has some amazing songs on it but I rate Kill 'Em All & Ride the Lightning higher in terms of the albums as a whole.

Metallica - Creeping Death

Yeah, I would agree that the evolution hasn't always been for the better but there are still some good songs to come out of it all, which is what is important to me. I've not bothered to listen to Lulu yet but I know of it's existence. I guess I almost don't want to listen to it to keep the dream alive ;)

I'd just make the point that IMO, selling out completely involves the band losing it's identity, which I don't think Metallica have. It's 10x better to be 'mainstream' than be churning out commercial music. I think there is a distinction.

I noticed that Metallica are recording another album. It's hard to know will come next... I think Death Magnetic was a step back in the right direction but who knows.

Metallica - The Day That Never Comes

I'm a bit gutted that Metallica are playing at both Sonisphere & Glastonbury this year... I wish I'd known earlier otherwise I'd have gone to see them. I HAVE to see them live. Hopefully they'll be back in the UK in 2015.

^^^^

Kerry King was in neither, he's in Slayer.

It's ok, you seem to be new to metal in your love of the "classics" but good call on Morbid Angel, Deicide and some of the others you've posted.

Check out some of my links in the metal thread and branch out into the TRUE UNDERGROUND of metal.

It's where the best shit is found.

For the next month leading up to the Big Four show at Yankee Stadium on September 14, Guitar World and Revolver are teaming up to bring you exclusive Big Four content every day for four weeks -- the "Big Four Weeks," if you will.

This latest story comes from Revolver's Big Four issue (which you can pick up here) and recalls the early days of Megadeth when the band's lineup -- if for a brief four shows in 1984 -- featured another young thrasher by the name of Kerry King. You can read an excerpt below.

Kerry played with Megadeth early on. What were those shows like?
DAVID ELLEFSON He played the first five shows with us as our second guitar player. I think Slayer was a little bit on the fence with what they were doing, what their direction was. Kerry always claimed that he saw Dave play with Metallica at the Whisky [a Go Go venue in Los Angeles] and how it changed his life. Playing with us, Kerry was such a natural fit with Dave’s guitar-playing style. He just fundamentally understood how to play those riffs.

Kerry, did you learn a lot from Mustaine about guitar while you were in Megadeth?
KERRY KING Well, if you listen to him, he’ll fucking say, “Yeah.” [Laughs] As far as he’s concerned, he’ll tell you he fucking created me. [Laughs]

Listen, I’ve learned to take Dave with a grain of salt. He means something, and it just comes out different. [Laughs] I think everybody’s learned that over the years. I’m sure I did learn stuff from Dave. I was very young. I think he’s got a couple years on me. He’d been doing it longer than me.

You can read the full article here.

^^^

Huh I didn't know that.

He's not listed as a former member of Megadeth on Encyclopedia metallum.

I wonder why.

Maybe he just toured with them?

see both right :) but this is more my style these days back to sort of my childhood roots you know before you really got into music but knew you liked what you heard Mondays lets about same year as this Metallica concert

I honestly thought there would be more people lurking who were Metallica fans....

I just bought a day ticket to go to Sonisphere on the day Metallica are headlining. =D

They are doing an 18 song set apparently... 17 fan-voted songs & 1 new song. I'm not sure whether I picked my ticket up too close to the event or not to vote. Just got to figure how to get there cheap & where to stay!

A fantastic documentary on the making of the Black Album:

Metallica offer free download of national anthem

Metallica-Jason-O.-Watson1.jpg

Ten days ago (May 16), James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett of Metallica played the national anthem at AT&T Park before the San Francisco Giants baseball game. Now, the band have offered a free download of the rendition.
The performance was part of the Giants’ second annual “Metallica Night.” You can find the file over at their website, along with a few pictures of the event. In addition to the national anthem, they also announced the starting lineups, threw out the first pitch and spent time in the broadcast booth. Other Metallica-themed activities were held throughout the night, including their children singing during the seventh inning stretch.
All of the fans in attendance received an inflatable Metallica guitar and a set of guitar picks with Metallica members on one side and Giants players on the other. Proceeds from the evening benefited the the Bay Area chapter of Little Kids Rock, which provides instruments and music education classes to children in under-served communities across the country.
Metallica are currently working on a new album. Although there is no set release date, they have said that they hope to have it completed by September.

Interesting stuff FG.

Not the best cover of Star Spangled banner but then again, will anything ever match up to Hendrix in that respect?

I'll have to have a look trough the live songs/shows to see if anything is worth downloading. I'd never spotted that tab on the Metallica website...

I'm certainly looking forward to the new album. I'm optimistic after Death Magnetic. I'll be hearing one of the new tracks at Sonisphere, which if I'm not mistaken will be this one:

It's not bad... a bit rough but what do you expect from something labelled as a "garage demo". I guess after some post-production it might sound a bit more polished if it is kept in its current form for the new album.

I read something interesting in the biography I'm reading. It said that they signed a contract with Elektra for 7 albums. They tried to re-negotiate the contract before Load but when Time Warner bought over Elektra, they wouldn't allow the changes they wanted & insisted on 7 albums. (I believe although Ride was released on Megaforce, Elektra got all rights to the album.) They came to some sort of agreement but it might explain why Metallica lost their way a bit with Load, Reload & St. Anger... I've no doubt they went the wrong way musically but I think they were told what they could & couldn't do to some extent. i.e. no solos in St. Anger. (Although apparently Lars Ulrich said solos were outdated but whether or not it was his thoughts or the producer who knows...)

I'm going to go ahead & guess they negotiated a new contract after that, which allowed them to take more control. Death Magnetic was certainly a step back in the right direction musically speaking whatever the reasons for the wrongs turns in the past...

It wouldn't be as controversial if Metallica had completely transformed into the style of band they were with Load/Reload... but they have always returned to their roots a lot with live shows, so it remains as controversial as ever really.

Apparently Rage Against the Machine played in 1994, although I don't think they headlined, but that weren't as commercially successful back then right? These days I don't anyone would bat an eyelid at RATM playing.

I think Metallica really transcend the whole heavy metal type set. They are Metallica... you know? They aren't just another metal band. They are fucking Metallica MAN! ;)

You get what I mean though. I don't think it's really as controversial as it's made out to be... people (festival goers/musicians) who don't really know much about Metallica just think they are sullying their holy festival. They are just ignorant. Jay Z was controversial too.

If they don't want to see them play, then don't fucking go to that stage & quit whining.

Lars made some quip (as he does) about following Jay Z's lead & performing a cover of Wonderwall to open. Would be funny if they did.

Bear Hunting TVShow Narrated by James Hetfield Leads to Metallica Glastonbury Protest

James-Hetfield.jpg

Metallica‘s upcoming appearance at Glastonbury is coming under some fire. While earlier this week, members of the band Mogwai took a few shots at the festival headliners over their musical prowess, this latest challenge actually has little to do with the band’s music. An online campaign has been launched to have the band removed from the bill because of James Hetfield‘s interest and support for hunting.
As was previously reported, Hetfield recently signed on to narrate an upcoming History Channel series titled ‘The Hunt.’ The eight-episode series, which starts on June 8, chronicles the hunt on Alaska’s Kodiak Island for a Kodiak brown bear, one of the largest predators on Earth.
Hetfield has never shied away from his love of hunting, but a new Facebook page launched by anti-hunting activists is calling for the band’s removal from the popular festival due to Hetfield support of big-game hunting. The Facebook page, titled “Remove Metallica From Glastonbury Festival,” states, “This page is an appeal to Glastonbury to remove Metallica from their lineup. We believe James Hetfield’s support of big-game hunting is incompatible with the spirit of Glastonbury and brings its good name into disrepute.”
In a post on the site, the campaign organizers states, “I doubt very much that James Hetfield is the first high profile Big Game Hunter to grace Glastonbury’s stages, I’m sure there have been many. I do however doubt that any of them have had a prime time History Chanel show promoting his view that Big Game Hunting is a good thing to do on at the same time. This double exposure gives his views extra publicity and acceptability and this is where we can have an effect.”
As of this posting, the ”Remove Metallica From Glastonbury Festival” Facebook page has over 15,000 likes.

Lars Ulrich on Will Ferrell-Chad Smith Drummer Challenge: ‘Bring It On’

Will-Ferrell-Lars-Ulrich-Chad-Smith.jpg

The challenge is out there, and Lars Ulrich is game! The Metallica drummer has accepted the drum battle proposed by Red Hot Chili Peppers skinbeater Chad Smith and cowbell king Will Ferrell, who themselves recently enjoyed a drum-off on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.’
The Ulrich challenge came up recently during a recent Spin interview with Ferrell, who confessed, “Lars gets pissed because he gets mistaken for both me and Chad Smith. He can settle that score now, too.” If you remember, the Smith/Ferrell drum battle started over the fact that they were often mistaken for each other and wanted to settle the score. Now Ulrich gets to enter the fray as well.
Ulrich issued a statement to Spin revealing his interest in the drum battle, stating, “It was a little lonely on the sidelines during the first drum-off, given the somewhat forced nature of the lookalike element between Chad Smith and Will Ferrell, when I’m TRULY the one carrying that dead-ringer gene around! As for any further drum-offs, I’m sure that with a bit of practice, I could give Chad a run for his money. But Will? That’s a whole different story. He rules the ‘bad-ass drummer universe.’ I mean, you’re talking about a guy who’s so next level, actually, so beyond next level, that he may just be completely unreachable! That said, I’m definitely up for the challenge … Bring it on!!!”
The Smith/Ferrell drum battle managed to raise $300,000 for the Cancer for College and Little Kids Rock charities. Though Ulrich has accepted the challenge, an official date, location and terms have yet to be revealed.
