the meaning of life?

why are we here? what is the point of succeeding in life? all these questions with no answers rambling through my head.

those of us who are religious or spiritual in some way believe in some greater power, that we are all part of something greater, that a Being or force put us here for a specific pupose.

But i fail to see the point of getting good grades, going to college, getting a job etc.. is there a greater good? if there is then unless you are scientifically inclined in some research that can be continued after your death by another that in the end benefits the whole of mankind, then your objective is basically directed towards your own interests. For this reason is human nature selfish.

we go out in the world to get money, that is the goal of every single homosapien out there, no money = no food = death = no life. without money you can not get food to survive. where does all the money go in the end? to our government. each government spends millions on defense and oil and expenses to keep their nation going strong and not succumb to any other.
in the end what is the point of this vicious cycle? we are not building a better world although we are taught to in school, the kids in schools are always told you are the future, has that future ever been any better? yes, maybe, but is it good?
what i'm trying to say is even though mankind is happy with their life, it will always be of a selfish nature. Do you agree?

For those of you who have pets why do you love them? what do they bring you? they love and ask for nothing except for love. a fair equal trade. maybe that is the meaning of life maybe it is just another illusion. :\

i'm not saying life is pointless, i'm asking what is the meaning of your life and the meaning of all of us being here, on earth?
i'm still looking for meaning to life, maybe that is it in itself, the fact of finding answers to my life..

Well usually people act out their life based on their belief in the meaning of life... Some people don't know or don't believe in any meaning of life so they 'live life to the fullest'. Being it having fun, being successful, making an impact, trying as much as possible, whatever. People will always live life, though, because it is by nature that people try to survive. Just something we all have (unless you have some serious mental disorder).

If you are living life and question these things and wonder what the point in succeeding in life is, ask yourself: "Would you rather be happier about myself and life or be depressed and poor all my life?" Unless you plan on killing yourself, most likely you'd want the first and will do the best to keep your life as pleasant as possible.

Some people just ignore the question of the meaning of life and just live in the moment, but I'm sure everyone at one point has pondered this question. I think this question is not to be ignored and should be deeply thought about and answers should be sought. Search for the answer and only stop when you have found what you truly believe and don't take the easy way out and give up or pick the "next-to-best-thing".

For me I have found my answer to this question and firmly believe it. Though I believe most times I don't live up to my purpose, I still have a firm belief in it and know I have little to worry about in the end.

OT:
when i was a kid, i misunderstood what this question means. I thought it meant, "what is the significance of the existence of biological forms in the universe," not, "what is the point of a human's life".

ebola

I used to think all of these questions, until I realised Atheism held all the answers.

By chance, a few organic minerals creating the first cell - a bacterium. And from their, law takes over. Natural selection where the strongest survives and over a few million years we appear on the scene.

^ Well, you can make purpose. Do something with your life, progress, find love and things like that.

But yes. As my thinking is that life is chance and that there is no God, it would indicate that there is no real purpose to life, and that would explain why there are so many people leading mundane and predictable lives, mentally retarded people who are not even aware of their consciousness have souls or not, why there is evil and all that sort of thing...

The best arguement that i've heard, against my thinking, is that the purpose in life is to learn to "love", as that will help you create a bond with God in the next life or something along those lines

there is more to the meaning of life in my opinion than just a purpose, you can find that meaning through purpose or love or whatever gives you reason to live. but as i said earlier, that meaning is most of the time selfishly inclined, wether that is good or bad, is not for anyone to judge.

IMO
True success in life is accepting the one you're served and fucking (stimulating) it.

As to the purpose/point/reason....
-The individual: Look at a dictionary as an analogy. Words defined by more words defined by more words into infinity. So the reason for each of us is everyone and everything else. Taken this thought straight through and incorporating eternal subatomic particles, I deduce that with the elimination of something (even as small as an atom) from existence, then nothing would/could exist because the "big bang" would have been altered if not prevented.
-The whole: Unfathomable fortune/luck.

I think this life is too find contentment ... freedom of ego's ...

so we're ready for the next lesson....

sure there have been times were my ego would say "no, its not possible... it doesn't feel right" .. ect

but they are just ego's ....

It is a great exercise in double-think, to live a good life but simultaneously realize it's inherent meaninglessness. How people do it day-in, day-out, baffles me :)

The purpose of everything in the universe is based on its inherhit function, which is in turn determined by its form. Life on this planet forms a complex series of chemical reactions based on DNA/RNA coded protiens and enzymes with the basic function of replicating the DNA instruction set ad-infinitum. We, as people, are vessles by which our DNA uses to sustain its existance long enough to pass our genetic heritage down to a subsequent generation, in turn ensuring the survival of at least half of the host's code. Everything else in life is a meaningless consequence of your DNA coded survival functions.

So what the hell am I even getting at? Life is just a generic term for an ongoing chemical process, and that process is what makes life. Therefore, the meaning of life is to live, and to keep on living, until you can pass your DNA on to a new generation as a means of ensuring that half of your DNA gets to keep on living even longer. Just live and you'll fullfill the purpose of life.

What i don't understand is what makes people continue to keep living. Like what gives them drive in their lives, when there is no real function to their existance.

Why do people chase the dollar and do all the freaky shit they do if they don't know why they are doing it.

It seems a little silly to me, everyone seems to be running around blind.

As far as I am concerned, the point of life is to live and enjoy yourself. Do what makes you happy and focus less on material things.

matter and energy can be neither created nor destroyed... so i really don't see how they're so different.. i think that matter is just energy percieved in from, and energy is just the driving force behind matter, they're interchangable... i think that this is what it's all about.. almost like life is one big explosion, and this life is just one perception of it.. one view out of millions of possible alternate realities, universes..

You are not the only one who thinks that. That is basically a major concept in the Theory of Relativity. There have been numerous experiments to support this theory.

the meaning of life? it hasn't changed since last time : still 42

All animals do the same. Ask an animal that question and you'll get the answer.

Nobody here is claiming to have invented these concepts. We're just saying what we agree with. :)

Your discussing many different issues. The function of human beings is one thing, and our own paticular culture and social/economic structure is another. You put humans on 5 different planets, and you'll get 5 different societies with their own beliefs and lifestyles. Anyway, money is worthless, the value is soley from what society places upon it. The governments prints it, puts it out and the whole point of our society is to keep the money flowing rapidly through our social structure. Thats what its all about. The faster the money cycles through the better our economic overview is. Whoever dictates the flow of that money will control people's options in life and what they do in their life.
