While living in the desert I found water
I discovered many lizards, snakes and venomous spiders
homeless veterans, refugees from South America
and even aliens from Area 51
interesting characters I am fond of
but the tunnel rats were the most interesting
this one kid's name was 'Starving Cat'
reptiles and vatos from El Salvador are unpredictable
aliens are unknowable
but this kid was something else
nobody knew why people called him Starving Cat
because he didn't even own a cat
he didn't even have a home

He had practiced smoking meth using only his front teeth
only lighter, bone and a Bic lighter
magically lighting dark tunnels under busy streets
no fog machine was needed those nights
look!-- he feels no pain!
he doesn't even need foil!
a magic trick
he sometimes impressed the sewer ladies
they worked at the McDonalds above the tunnels

He performed magic in the sewers
or off camera
or in the gas station's bathroom
if you witnessed it,
consider yourself lucky
a witness
a rare shiny pokemon
a mention in the newspapers
you might never see him again
I looked
but never saw him again
he might not exist anymore
other than my searching memory
next to an empty emotion

Definitely one of my favorites of yours. I love the name and the character Starving Cat - you could write a killer story with this premise.
Great ending too.
It's based on a true story. I used to smoke meth in the tunnels under McDonald's with a kid named Starving Cat. 😂

He was super entertaining. Squirrelly little dude
