I wondered if anyone has read the Marshall McLuhan work 'The Gutenberg Galaxy'? I first came across the name when reading about Russia's 'active measures' (propaganda using the identification and classification of groups or even individuals) using digital media. Unlike a paper book, it's possible to track who is reading what and to guide them. I'm sure the US and other nations have similar programs, but I happened to read about Russia's effort.

McLuhan identified 4 epochs:

1) Oral tribe culture
2) Manuscript culture
3) Gutenberg galaxy
4) Electronic age

And considering it was released in 1962, he really was on the money He defined the electronic age as producing the 'global village'.

Of course, we have learnt that Grisham's Law applies to digital media more than to any other field of communication. McLuhan even noted 'if a product is free - YOU are the product'.
