The Brutal Road Ahead

Hi everyone—

I’ve been on opioids for 19 years, currently taking 3×30mg MS Contin daily. I’m a high-functioning user with legitimate injuries and zero abuse or mental addiction—just long-term physical dependence. Ironically, I do have a history of abuse, but that ended over a decade ago when I got married and had kids.

I’ve been stable on this dose for years. At my worst, I was taking 8×80mg Oxy a day, so switching meds and tapering was a big win—just one I haven’t pushed further due to life pressures.

I need off, but I can’t afford full withdrawal—I’m literally a fucking trial attorney and business owner with a family and zero room for error.

The meds have wrecked my pain tolerance; my injuries feel both treated and aggravated. Now I hit mild withdrawals weekly—mainly chills and crushing headaches from occipital neuralgia. If it were just restless legs and nausea, tbh, I’d gut it out and be done like I used to. But these headaches are unbearable.

I’ve been through withdrawal before—but not in 10 years. I have 30mg pills and a stockpile of 15s to work with, and I’m finally ready (I think) to taper smart.

Looking for advice from anyone who’s done this without crashing and burning. I know this post itself is just part of putting it off, stalling, but you know how planning these things goes. Like Perry Farrell once said: I'm gonna kick tomorrow.

Appreciate any help.

(And to reiterate: there really is no risk of abuse. I'm not just saying that either. It's just something I don't do anymore—and I think that gives me at least one small edge.)

Thank you.

Brother yeah you are going to have a very rough road ahead. You'll probably withdrawal fir two weeks. It's going to feel like he'll the first 3 - 4 days then it can start to feel better.

Kratom is a thing that exists. Alot of people on here like it. In my experience though with a massive opiate tolerance it can be hit or miss if the kratom will break you out of withdrawal. That's in my own experience. Kratom is an option though. Amphetamine will help to a degree.

If i was in your situation I would seek a suboxone clinic honestly. If you have to function like normal at your job sub is the way. Your going to still feel bad on everything else, I'm the Michael Jordan of withdrawaling at work lol. If you need zero error you need suboxone and then taper off.

Lol. Michael Jordan of WD at work. That made me laugh. I was thinking about tapering by 15 mg at a time, but I did that a few times in another life, and I remember it was a nightmare. It's almost worse than just going cold turkey in one fell swoop. I've always wondered about Suboxone, is it a seamless transition from the morphine to the sub? Also, what is the process like getting off the sub?

Sorry for the accidentally double reply I think I tabbed out and posted second reply.
(I have holes in my brain I'm sorry lol)

You are persribed the oxies right? You could cut pills and try to taper. Idk what pharmaceutical oxy is like these days I'm sure there coated.

Suboxone you need know how much your going to need. You may need 8 mgs of sub. I don't know your age or weight but 19 years of oxies and doing 8 x 80 mgs a day is alot id have to imagine you have a massive tolerance.

I used to do 8 in the morning and 8 at night. With suboxone you need to be sure to have the opiates pretty much out of your system. The way to tell that your ready to take is subs is when you legitimately start experiencing opiate withdrawal.
If you take bupe with opiates in your
System you will get precipitated withdrawal.

I don't know what your pain is like. Subs kind of treat pain if your still in pain gabapentin is the go to for people in recovery I believe.
You could try to taper. I can't say if that will be pain free or if you will be able to control it.

The subs make you clean, you will not crave at all. Sub clinics are pretty easy to get into. Id say check your local area. Good luck man.

A doctor/scientific research at one of the most elite universities in the US who’s specialty is pain medicine and his practice is specific to getting pain patients off opioids told me this:

“Patients never get off opioids unless some life situation forces them to”

You’ve got your high demand job keeping you trapped and giving you the valid excuse to keep taking opioids. The pain itself might be a secondary life situation even keeping you trapped.

I don’t see you realistically stopping unless you take a break from work..but even then will it work out long term?

My life is very much the same as yours and I’ve stopped a few times after a long taper with only minor disruption to work….but most of the time i remained trapped all because of work even when the pain let up and I could get off at that time. Only in times where I quit or lost my job did that create the “life situation” that was the impetus for stopping.

Sadly I always have ended up right back on the fucking pills due to a slew of pain conditions and worsening health. What were all those withdrawals for?

It’s a nightmare man I don’t have an answer for you.

The transition at your dose of morphine will suck. You will be in withdrawal for 4 days to a week until your body adjusts to subs

The withdrawal from sub with a taper is worse than tapering off morphine, oxy, fentanyl etc.

Also sub will do very little for your pain compared to morphine.
