Oh Mah Hah
I UTFSE and didn't find any results, so if you close/merge this thread (Bill) I'm going to write you an angry e-mail with lots of "fuck you"s in it.

This thread is primarily for discussion of music that doesn't really fit any simple classification or is otherwise wholly original/ahead of its time, and secondarily for music snobs to jerk each other off.

Posting of any music in 4/4 time is to be met with ridicule and name-calling.

Now, check this motherfucker out:

And the polar opposite of that last song:

I fucking love Ahleuchatistas! I literally just heard this song from their new album and liked it, which is great since I didn't like any of their last album, and only 1 on the previous one. Loosing their bassist made a big difference. I liked their old drummer, but the song I just linked is sweet.
I can't find any of 'On the Culture Industry' on youtube, so have songs 6-9 from their 2007 album 'Even in the Midst'

Huh, that's an interesting band. They've got quite a range. After the first video I was ready to write them off as a straight-up post rock band and then berate you as stipulated in the OP, but they've definitely got something else going on. I really love the interplay between the drums and guitar - it's complex, a little disorienting, but still very melodic and...I dunno..."down to earth" (at least compared to the Octis track I posted, which is in a similar stylistic vein but, imo, a bit more intimidating). Gotta say dude, I dig it.

Another track from Mick Barr (the name of the guy from the Octis video):

I mean...shit...it sounds like something aliens would listen to.

Barr is fast as fuck.
I can respect the skill needed to play some music, but I honestly don't give two shits about originality/talent/skill/experimentation/etc if I don't actually enjoy the music.
I'm glad you like him, though.
I suppose you've heard his music with Zach Hill?

Well, irrespective of my personal taste, this is a thread to share avant garde music, and although this song is mostly 4/4 how about some Death Grips? If you answered no, too bad.

I've tried engaging some of my friends in discussion of Mick Barr before, and your comment is the best I've ever managed to coax out of one of them. Mostly it's just "dude, that's just some random-sounding bullshit, turn it off!" I'm not really sure what I find so intriguing about his music...or maybe that's just it...it's like a mystery. His music obviously produces a strong reaction in those who hear it (positive or negative is irrelevant), which is the whole point I think. Music is meant to produce an emotional response from the listener, and Mick Barr's music produces such a specific emotional response from me that I've ended up spending hours just scrolling through various works of his trying to pin down what that emotion is. It's like a weird mixture of disgust, anxiety, wonder, intimidation, pain, fascination and inevitably, pleasure. Obviously this isn't music that I can listen to every day, but it provides an interesting intellectual diversion every once in awhile.

Or maybe I'm just a masochist. 8(

I suppose you've heard his music with Zach Hill?

Yeah, although I haven't listened to Shred Earthship as much as either of their solo outings.

Here's another Mick Barr project that is quite a bit more accessible than the other songs I've posted (although still pretty weird):

Here's an interesting track I found from electric harpist Zeena Parkins:

Anybody??

So I don't have anyone IRL I've ever met who has shared my musical tastes. Does nobody like experimental?
My favorite band is Heavy Heavy Low Low, and they might have one of the worst reps ever haha. I also love Daughters, The Chariot, Arab on Radar, McClusky, PRE, AIDS Wolf, shit like that.

Here are examples: (You should listen to them from bottom to top. I tried to make them in the order I wanted, but read the P.S. and you'll see why I couldn't handle it lol.)

I'm not sure if I'd classify any of this as "experimental", most if it is post-hardcore with bits of grindcore and other extreme punk offshoots. I really dig Daughters, a friend of mine introduced me to them a couple months ago and I immediately went out and bought Canada Songs.

If experimental music is what you're looking for though, come join the discussion in the Avant Garde thread so I have somebody else to talk to! ;)

Here's the band that first got me into Avant Garde experimentalism. Their music is quite accessible, and totally badass:

the new swans album, the seer, is absolutely fantastic. here's the title track, bring some patience, it's 32 minutes long.

also, scott walker, ladies and gentlemen:

what to post, what to post. Albert Ayler's Spirits Rejoice? Ornette Coleman's Shape of Jazz to Come? Coletrane's Ascension? I got it:

Being a huge fan of the mars volta, I also quite enjoy the solo work of Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. Gets quite experimental, and covers many different styles. He also has a HUGE volume of work to explore. Kind of reminds me of a modern day hendrix.
