Happy New Year Bluelight!

Another year of reality TV style politics behind us. Is this show in danger of cancellation? Or will it be renewed for another 4 years?

Either way it's sure to be an interesting ride, with an undeniably interesting president.

As in the last thread, for whatever it's worth, please pretty please try and keep ad-homs and trolling to a minimum.

Previous thread is here

Last posts were...

I find that statement "go back to where you came from " especially funny when it comes to Americans. You're all from Europe/africa/Asia and a very young country.

Yeah it's such an ignorant thing to say. I'm sure the native Americans die a little inside any time they hear someone say it. I mean FFS, even for Mexico, we took over California/Texas/etc, that used to be part of Mexico. It's such hypocrisy.

From the previous thread:

The State of the Union will be in January or February. Any predictions on what it will be like?

If Trump’s trial stemming from impeachment hasn’t happened, I think he’ll be a wreck.

Honestly, I hadn't thought that far ahead, but I think the tweets (and the comments from you and Xork) are accurate = either way, he's going to be nuts, ranting and spraying his talking points about randomly and with enthusiasm. But then again, isn't that how he's been all along? Shouldn't come as a surprise.

Note, I'm not mocking anyone or anything with my words. I honestly hadn't considered the SOTU, but because these posts bring it up...yeah, I'm not expecting anything new from him. Zebra's don't change their stripes. Perhaps the one bet I'd place is he uses it as a platform to list his accomplishments. If he's awaiting the trial, it is a pre-emptive defense. If he's past it, it's a free campaign stumping. I get that the SOTU is supposed to be about the country, where we have come to and where he sees us going, but my reference to 'his accomplishments' is about HIM, not the country.

So much for the tired and poor.

Trump’s Immigrant Wealth Test Cleared to Start by Supreme Court

The U.S. Supreme Court cleared President Donald Trump’s administration to start enforcing its new immigrant wealth test, designed to screen out green card applicants seen as being at risk of becoming dependent on government benefits.

In a 5-4 vote along ideological lines, the court blocked a New York federal judge’s ruling that was keeping the policy from taking effect while a legal fight goes forward.

The Supreme Court released the order even as Chief Justice John Roberts presided over Trump’s impeachment trial across the street in the Senate. Roberts was in the majority, along with fellow Republican appointees Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan dissented.

The Trump rule changes what critics say is a longstanding understanding of federal immigration law and its bar on permanent residency for “public charges.” The new rule expands the definition of public charge and gives officials broad power to determine that someone is at risk of falling into that category.

The rule will “radically disrupt over a century of settled immigration policy and public-benefits programs,” New York, Vermont, Connecticut and New York City argued in a filing that urged the court to leave the rule on hold.

The court as a whole gave no explanation for its order. In an opinion for himself and Thomas, Gorsuch said the court needs to curb the power of federal trial judges to issue nationwide orders blocking a governmental initiative.

“The real problem here is the increasingly common practice of trial courts ordering relief that transcends the cases before them,” Gorsuch wrote.

Credit Scores

The Supreme Court action clears the administration to enforce the rule everywhere except Illinois, where a separate court order continues to block the new policy.

Under the new rule, immigrants will be considered public charges if they are deemed likely to receive such public benefits as Medicaid, public housing assistance or food stamps for more than 12 months over a 36-month period.

To make that determination, Department of Homeland Security officials can consider a list of factors, including age, health, education, English-language proficiency, family size, wealth, and credit score.

The ruling “represents a reasonable and lawful exercise of the substantial discretion Congress has long vested in the executive branch to make public-charge admissibility determinations,” U.S. Solicitor General Noel Francisco, the administration’s top Supreme Court lawyer, said in court papers.

Previously, people didn’t qualify as a public charge unless they were receiving cash benefits from the government and were primarily dependent on that aid.

Five immigrant-services organizations are joining the New York-led group in challenging the rule. They say the rule violates federal immigration law and the Constitution’s equal protection guarantee.

The case is Homeland Security v. New York, 19A785.

I thought this was Kushner’s plan; I guess that Time cover was too much spotlight. Someone really wants a Nobel Peace Prize...

Trump presents Middle East peace plan, green lights Israeli annexations

President Trump unveiled Tuesday his administration's long-awaited Middle East peace plan, which he hailed as a "realistic two-state solution" at a press conference alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Why it matters: Palestinian leaders have boycotted the peace process and preemptively rejected Trump's plan, but Israel has embraced it. As the plan was released publicly, U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman told reporters that the areas of the West Bank envisioned as Israeli territory can be immediately annexed.
State of play: The big question beyond the details of the plan was what the Arab reaction would be.
  • Oman, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates attended Trump's remarks — a possible indication he has their support.
  • But Jordan's foreign minister has warned that Israeli annexations in the West Bank could have drastic consequences.
  • Friedman said Israel "does not have to wait at all" to move ahead with annexations, adding: "the waiting period would be the time it takes for them to obtain internal approvals."
What he's saying: Trump said his plan would create a Palestinian state with a capital in parts of eastern Jerusalem. It also calls for a four-year freeze on Israeli settlements, while recognizing existing settlements in the West Bank.
  • "I have done a lot for Israel," Trump said. "It is reasonable that I have to do a lot for the Palestinians, or it just wouldn't be fair."
  • He said no one on either side of the border would be "uprooted from their homes."
  • The president added this could be "the last opportunity" for a Palestinian state. His explanation was that he had put together a strong team "who love the United States and they love Israel."
  • Trump's conditions for a Palestinian state include that Hamas will disarm and the new state will recognize Israel as a Jewish state while granting Israel full security control of the West Bank and Jerusalem, per the Telegraph's Raf Sanchez. The plan also rejects the "right of return" for Palestinian refugees.
The big picture: Recent administrations have seen their role as facilitating dialogue between Israel and Palestine and setting parameters for a potential agreement. Trump has made a radical departure by choosing to release a more detailed plan — particularly one that only one party supports.
  • Netanyahu emphasized what Israel would be gaining under Trump's plan, including areas previously declared "illegally occupied."
  • Past peace plans, he said, "failed because they did not strike the right balance between Israel's vital security and national interests and the Palestinians' aspirations for self-determination."
  • "You have been the greatest friend that Israel has ever had in the White House," he declared.
Zoom out: "There is a straight line from the decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, to the killing of Qassem Soleimani, to this attempt to rewrite the parameters of a peace settlement," said Rob Malley, CEO of International Crisis Group: "an administration increasingly confident in its way, indifferent to the views of others, emboldened by the absence of serious, immediate backlash, and certain that it can change reality merely by virtue of imposing its will."
Between the lines: There are domestic political upsides here for both Trump and Netanyahu, but no one expects a deal on these terms any time soon.
  • Dennis Ross, Bill Clinton's Middle East envoy, told reporters ahead of the plan's release that reaction from around the region will determine whether it goes nowhere or serves as a basis for future negotiations.
The backdrop: Netanyahu is fighting for his political life and seemed to relish the opportunity to stand alongside Trump at the press conference and follow him at the podium.
  • Earlier today, he surrendered his immunity from prosecution over three corruption indictments before it could be revoked by a parliamentary committee.
  • The peace plan and the charges against him will both be central to the election on March 2, Israel's third in a year.
  • Gantz met with Trump yesterday and said he supports the plan, though he believes no steps should be taken to implement it until after the election.
Go deeper:

The guy doesn't know why he's being impeached. Might as well just send him to juvey.

Sorry. Wrong thread. I thought I had something to say, but mucked it all up.

lol what a joke re: "two state solution". Where is that state going to be, exactly? All I see in the article is that it'll be in "parts of east Jerusalem"...but it also says that security in Jerusalem and the West Bank will be the exclusive purview of the Israelis? LOL! The West Bank is already well on its way to being consumed by Israel and all this "peace plan" is is an American validation of that process

What the plan offers, according to The Guardian:

  • Establish Jerusalem as Israel’s “undivided” capital, with a potential Palestinian capital to the east and north of the city.
  • Recognise the vast majority of Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian territory as part of the country. A Palestinian state would receive territory, mostly desert, near Gaza to compensate for the loss of about 30% of the West Bank. Gaza and the West Bank would be linked by high speed rail.
  • Recognise the Jordan valley, which makes up about a third of the occupied West Bank, as part of Israel.
  • Offer a path to some form of Palestinian statehood but with no army, and overarching Israeli security control in some areas, including over the sea. The plan also sets a series of conditions the Palestinians have to meet before receiving independence including the “complete dismantling of Hamas”, which governs Gaza.
  • The possibility of stripping Israeli citizenship from tens of thousands of Arab Israelis who live in 10 border towns, with those towns and their residents being included into any future state of Palestine.
  • Recognise sections of the desert bordering Egypt as part of any future Palestinian state.
  • Refuse Palestinian refugees the “right of return” to homes lost to Israel in previous conflicts.

So basically what they were offered was a ghettoized microstate which would be utterly dominated by Israel, much in the same way the Gaza strip is today.

So i didn't know where else to put this, maybe here is fine. I just registered to vote and now wondering where i need to go to find information on the next election; who's running etc. Maybe that isn't available yet. But i mean not just for the 2 major parties but others like Green or Anarchist. Where does one look for this?

EDIT: Is there anything else i have to do, let's say if i plan to vote for a minor party like Green party or Anarchist party? I thought there was a form to fill out but not sure because the Internet tells me nothing

From what I understand, Palestine just wants their contested land back that they were pushed off of. I'm quite sure they hate the Jews but can you blame them at this point? Shit's fucked up over there and Israel is firmly in the position of dominator.

Palestine is part of original Canaan which was a huge place. The people there are descendants of Canaanites, so they have a valid claim to land

It seems like the USA doesn't really want to put any more parties in the mix when it comes to major political struggles. It would be nice, maybe even revolutionary to include a green party and an independent party in the ballots so that people didn't feel like they were voting between Beavis and Butthead, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. As for you question, I'm completely clueless. Politics for me is a lot like trying to learn sports. I just can't remember that many names, my brain does not work like that. Gotta find your own info and it's a major pain in the ass for some. I usually just go by a person's aura when it comes to voting, but I've always mainly voted between just two candidates. I think that's going to change for me starting this year.

Wish I had more of a voice in politics; I'd start influencing people to vote for whoever they feel is the right candidate.

Israel wants to expand their borders. The most fair agreement would be go back to the 1967 lines and have East Jerusalem as capital of Palestine. The Palestinians might go for that deal but the Israelis never will. It's the same old line, we can't do this because of national security, and that also would entail removing the Israeli settlements.

Palestinians have told off anyone who offered any solution going back decades. Anything that doesn't offer total annihilation of Israel and the Jews is unacceptable to them. Makes it kinda hard to negotiate any kind of settlement.
Really? that is some serious delusion, given Israel has never negotiated in good faith becuase the extreme Zionists will reverse any concessions.

how about the basis of the Oslo Accord 1993?
The agreement Yitzak Rabin was murdered for by an extreme Zionist with the collusion of Shin Bet. To remind you subsequent to that Israel reneged on its side of the deal.

Occupied Territory, you do get what this means?
UN resolutiuon 446:
"The policy and practices of Israel in establishing settlements in the Palestinian and other Arab territories occupied since 1967 have no legal validity and constitute a serious obstruction to achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East"

West Bank, Gaza and the Golan and the Sheeba farms are all occupied.

That includes the property that little weasel Kushner and his family own on occupied territory.

For the moment Israel is getting top cover from the most zionist US president in living memory, it will not last. Trump and Kushner will be gone and Israel will have to negotiate in good faith with its neighbors. Sheldon Adelson is trying to get as much bang for buck before Trump implodes.
