Lately it seems that text talk is everywhere on forums. Im sure i sound like a grumpy old man here but its just fuckin annoying. Its bad enough that hardly anyone talks to each other face to face or even over a telephone cause of the new technology but it just seems a new level of laziness has developed. Are we so lazy that we cant even spell out whole sentences anymore? Is it just too much? lmao, smh, ehid, ldfogke, djkfos, etc. Or do we not have the balls to type shut the fuck up instead of stfu? Its lame and quite retarded. Im sure Im gonna get the assholes responding with it on this thread but does anyone agree with me its just fucking annoying and lazy and ballless?

Grumpy old woman here, and I don't know what half those abbreviations mean. I can see in the Lounge where it's expected and I get that because they're not referring to drugs. My pet peeve is when people can't take a minute to type out the correct name of their drug. Ie, hydromorphone (dilaudid) = dillies. Annoys the hell of out me. Or oxymorphone, Opana called pandas, what the hell? Another one Perc 30's- they are oxycodone not Percocet. Another one alprazolam = Xanax not bars or footballs. Not so much laziness, they try to be "hip" = fail in my book.

I totally agree with this, and have thought about and discussed it often with friends, acquaintances, and customers of mine. I absolutely loathe text conversations. Just pick up the phone and call me where we can get to the point. A 30 minute text conversation can be over in a couple of minutes. My boss also likes me to email her, but I'd rather just call and get an answer and cover my ass right then and there, so I do. Call me old fashioned but it is getting a tad ridiculous.

Well I am glad to see some people agree with what I was saying. I think its worse then swim because at least with swim i know what the person is referring to which, 99% of the time, is themselves. With all these abbreviations for phrases I don't know what the person is saying or what they mean.

i think that a lot of it has to do with the nature of humanity as a whole, at least, the way that the current mental trends tend to be going. as time has passed, it seems that ethics like minimalism have started to take a hold of the collective unconscious; it can get pretty annoying sometimes, when a conversation starts dragging itself out incessantly. but, in my specific experience, i can tell you that i would rather have a 30 minute conversation via textual means than a 5 minute phone conversation. i get extremely anxious whenever i am on the phone, and start second guessing myself frequently due to the nature of synchronous interaction. it may also have helped that i've had tons of experience in call centers, and it's gotten to the point where i very much dislike being on the telephone. who knows !!! i used to be very against the phenomenon of this "text talk" growing further, but it would seem that it did, nonetheless. i feel that self expression is valid and important, no matter how much it deviates from common accepted conventions for human interaction. idk maybe i'm just too much of a bleeding heart or some shit, but, i just see it as: it is what it is.

I don't like text talk either but I recognize that we're living in an increasingly mobile world in which many people do access BL from their cell phones and after failing to type something properly five dozen times on a shitty virtual keyboard the temptation to just go with abbreviations is quite strong.

My boss also likes me to email her, but I'd rather just call and get an answer and cover my ass right then and there, so I do. Call me old fashioned but it is getting a tad ridiculous.

that's not a bad policy because email correspondence leaves a record, and that's kind of important, legally-admissible evidence to have in case your boss wants to try making up reasons to fire you. even if the boss likes you, other colleagues can still draw you into bullshit he-said-she-said scenarios if you lack the means to defend yourself with some evidence. There's no reason to not email gratuitously in a professional setting unless you particularly enjoy the stress of fishing your own ass out of hot water from time to time.

In my line of work, I prefer email over phone conversations and in-person conversations because then there is always an email trail. Someone can't say "I never said that!!" .... I can just forward an email and be like "yes, you did say that, that's why I did what you asked me to do."

Dont like them. Slows down my typing. I used to not use any capital letters so I have made progress. I dont understand why there is such a concern about it. The bolded bits are exactly what the thread is about - why is it OK for you to contract word without apostrophes or to use "text talk" like OP or to shorten words like 'because', but it's not OK for someone to say STFU, GTFO, LOL or any other contraction/acronym?
