Benzos Temazepam and bereavement

The other day I was prescribed temazepam by my doctor, for sleep issues. On the leaflet that comes with the prescription, among the other warnings, it says:

Take special care with Temazepam. Talk to your doctor before you start to take this medicine if you:
  • have recently suffered a bereavement (if Temazepam is taken to help sleep during periods of bereavement it may stop you coming to terms with the loss).

This struck me as an odd kind of warning to find on a medicine packet, and I wondered if there was any good reason for it, or anything that makes temaz. different to any other benzos or hypnotics in this respect, or whether it's just a warning because of some freak legal incident or something? Anyone know?

I'm in the UK so I dunno if this appears on the literature with temazepam in other countries.

I should also add that three years ago, when I went to my doctor about insomnia a month after the death of my dad, I was prescribed temazepam quickly and routinely... 8)

It'll be because, with some people who are suffering from Depression, Temazepam and all other Benzos can accentuate Depression, which with someone in such a delicate and fragile state could send them over the edge.
I suffer from Depression and fortunately it doesn't add to it at all. Infact it causes euphoria at the right dose.

Again, last night was odd with regards to Temazepam's temperamental doses.
I took 40mg and was knocked the fuck off my arse! Usually I take 60mg and it's just right.
It seems tolerance to it waxes and wains. Weird, but I'm not complaining =D

It also means that benzos are not a cure but a temporary help that will push away the problems which will re-appear when you stop them.

That is one medication warning I have never seen before. I thought it was comon for people to be Rx'd benzos for a short time if somebody close to them dies.

This is put in here because temazepam is a very "relaxing" drug, it will make you seemingly "OK" with anything.

If you take 2 weeks worth of temazepam about 3 days after someone very close to you dies, you may find that 17 days after their death it "hits you again just has hard" etc, and may make you feel very very very bad when you run out of temazepam.

I wouldn't be able to forget/be "OK" with bereavement on temazepam, but I could easily see it being "stronger" for other people in the sense you could just sit down nodding in and out of consciousness without a care in the world.

Some people with inherent anxiety can never be that calm and even on benzos still have a milder degree of worry or anxiety, but naturally care-free people may find they stop coping with a loss when on something like temazepam.

Surprisingly, as relaxing as temazepam is, it doesn't mess up your REM sleep, which is a great plus for it being an insomnia med.

actually, we have similar warnings in the US too, but it's just worded differently i guess. temazepam and all other benzos are contraindicated in cases of depression and other mood disorders.

however, i can't say that my depression has ever been worsened by any benzo. but my depression seems to worsen when i stop taking benzos, usually because when i "binge" on benzos i end up doing and saying a lot of stupid things that i otherwise wouldn't do or say. the shame and embarrassment is difficult to cope with. :p
