Tell me about hydroxyzine HCl Oral/Atarax

Hydroxyzine is a 1st generation antihistamine and is used for allergies, nausea/motion sickness and insomnia, and occasionally anxiety. Recreation-wise are you after a benzo-type effect or delirium from high doses? Despite it being sedating and mildly anxiolytic I think you would be disappointed with the former use, and unusually for antihistamines it doesn't have much anticholinergic action so delirium/hallucinations is not as likely compared to other antihistamines.
It is a good potentiator of opioids (it inhibits a liver enzyme, CYP-2D6, which metabolises many opioids, so it is a true potentiator in that sense) and also adds to the sedation and helps with itching/nausea..

It is also a classical hallucinogen killer... Do not take it for anxiety from trips.

It didn't do much for me when that was all I was given besides the phenobarbital taper to get off benzos in one of my psych hospital stays. It is pretty benign, though, from my understanding. It is an anti-histamine, rather like any other sedating anti-histamine OTC or rx only. I was unaware that it actually inhibited a liver enzyme for true potentiation of opiates, but I guess that is a plus. Taken by itself it is not recreational. I don't know much about high dose hydroxyzine, or if it induces delirium as diphenhydramine does, but I assume it would. Don't know if that is particularly safe, though. Not the best idea with diphenhydramine, that is for sure.

I was sold this by a Pharmacy in Thailand a few years back after explaining i needed something to calm my nerves and help me sleep on my long haul flight home.
The Pharmacist sold me this assuring me it would do the job... I started out with the recommended dose which didnt do anything so i finally increased the doseage until i got to the point where it made me feel quite unwell, so Clinically or Recreationally it is something i will never take again.
Although there are no Anti-Histamines that have ever helped reduce my Anxiety or promote sleep.
Just my opinion/experience.
For many others im sure it does work well for these reasons, and as many have mentioned im sure it works well when taken with Opiates.
