As the stars fly by over head, I lean my head back and gaze. I see orion (and i see nothing) briefly, against a clear black skyline. She talks about the nights sunset, how bueatiful she thought the colors were, meshed into the clouds, blended like a golden crimson.
I just laugh, and tell her that the sunset has nothing on the moonrise. That the bleeding of powder to cobalt to ebony is a metaphor for the cycle of life. the light fading into dark is like the passing of our lives.
She starts to frown, worried. "But it all goes back to the light. She asks me if I look forward to anything. She asks if I have hope for my future. I smile and say of course I do, but the dark will always conquer the light. The darkness will always win. Everyday the battle begins anew, and the darkness always prevails.
She slows the car, pulling over to the side of the road. She asks me if there's anything wrong. Am I alright? Why am I talking like this. I smile and lean over, kissing her softly on the lips. I lean back and I point to orion again.
Anyone can find beauty when the light is shining bright. To find it in the dark, you have to look. To search. Only then will you find true beauty.
The stars of orions belt sparkle like diamonds. I get out of the car. She follows. I climb upon the hood and lay door, and as she does the same I hold her hand. The warm breeze, coupled with the still running engine, warm our bodies, as we both lay in silence.
Suddenly a shooting star passes over head and she gasps. I've never seen one before she says. I tell her she never would have seen it were it light out. The beauty of the darkness is rare and magnificant. Sunsets may be pretty, But the constant shine of the stars, or the shimmer of the moonlight against the ocean are the true master pieces of the gods.
I slowly slid off the hood, making my way back to the car. And I laugh as I notice she has a look on her face that says she isn't quite sure what to do next. Relax, I say, I was just talkin' shit about a pretty sunset.
