Does anyone here have experience with Chlorpromazine? I've been self-medicating on etizolam for a while now to cope with social anxiety, saw a friend of mine the other day, he's prescribed Chlorpromazine but doesn't use them so has loads, he sorted me out a couple of boxes randomly so i thought spot on cause although they are anti-psychotics they apparently help massively with anxiety another friend told me.

I'd never even heard of this drug before then, I've done a bit of research on the net and it can apparently cause some pretty nasty side effects, possibly permanent but this only occurs when one is taking high doses daily for at least 2-3 years.

I have etizolam so I wouldn't be taking the Chlorpromazine every day, my 'plan' is if the Chlorpromazine works better for anxiety then I will take that when I know i'm going to have an anxiety-fueled day and take Etizolam for the less nerve-wracking days.

I imagine the Chlorpromazine will be more effective in getting rid of my social anxiety as Etizolam, although it still works wonders, obviously it's not as effective as it once was due to previous benzo addiction (vallies) and the fact i've been taking it for a while now.

Using powerful antipsychotics to quell anxiety disorders or phobia disorders (Social Anxiety Disorder) is like killing a fly with a bazooka, and they do have nasty, sometimes permanent side effects.

Although I can't say benzo addiction is any good, I'll wager that if you keep your etizolam dose steady (since you're already physically dependent via GABA rekindling, since you were addicted to valium), and learn CBT techniques, exposure therapy, mindfulness, and meditation, you won't even need the antipsychotics, since you say the etizolam "still works wonders."

So you are saying anti-psychs will be extremely effective for social anxiety but the negative side effects outweigh the benefits, surely taking them just one day every week or 2 would be ok if something comes up?

I was actually on the waiting list for CBT treatment specifically for social anxiety but on the condition i had stopped taking etizolam i was tapering off them and was down to just 0.5mg a day. Unfortunately I started a job 3 weeks before they called me to start CBT so i upped my etizolam usage in order to cope at work - back to where i started again.

Now i have to find a way to taper down again, which likely won't happen due to the stress of work and call up to get put to the back of the waiting list for CBT again. I'll have a read up on exposure therapy and mindfulness though thanks for the info. Well it "still works wonders" in comparison to what i would be like just as i come off them, my first time taking valium was the true wonder, such brooding confidence it was unreal, i thought i'd finally found the cure to my problem - couldn't have been more wrong!

I agree fully.

Back in the day I attempted to use Thioridazine for this purpose, and it was a complete fail.
Turned me into feeling like a cross-eyed reptile and was very unpleasant to even try and be social on them.
Never touched the stuff after that.

Again, this was from my own experience.

This stuff is for severely disturbed persons when other treatments have failed to quell psychosis. Thorazine is an anti psychotic like Haldol. When I was in prison they used to give Thorazine to a lot of the craziest dudes in there. Turned them into emotionless, drooling idiots. My advice is do not take this crap. Also, why is your friend scripted this and not taking it? IDK for a fact but at best he's a schizophrenic who is off meds. Docs don't to the best of my knowledge ever prescribe this medication to people for mild anxiety or social phobia. Not good medical practice. Best of luck.

/\...agreed.....110%

IMO...this would be a very, very bad idea OP. I say this as a psych nurse (nurse for almost 20 years), not from personal experience of taking it.

It is one of those drugs that is so bad that you can rarely get people who really really need to take it to be compliant in taking it in an outpatient situation because of horrible side effects (which may explain why friend has so much to give away).

What about just taking half a 50mg pill to help with sleep ?

I hear the drooling zombie thing happens with doses in the range of 1000mg ?

It can happen at a range of doses and that is not the only really bad side effect.

I just don't understand why you would want to take a major, heavy duty poisonous, toxic anti psychotic to help you sleep.

I took one 50mg tablet, knocked me out didn't notice any reduced anxiety, won't be trying them again.

LOOOL sure go for it, if your idea of being social of sitting with your mouth shut and your eyes closed.
