This thread is where you should ask your general question on supplements.

(Please use the search engine before posting as chances are very good someone else asked the exact same, or a very similar question. For tips on using the search engine to get better results, click here.)

"Taking ____ will do what?"

"How much of ____ should I take?"

"How much of ____ is too much?"

"What should I take for ____?"

General questions like that belong in this thread.

There are numerous other threads on supplements though. Some of them include:

If any major supplement threads are missing from the listing, please let a mod know and it will be added. Thanks, Changed, for compiling that list originally. :)

alright so i went out and bought some carnitine to promote increased energy for my runs. it says its' L-carnitine L-tartrate i looked it up and i cant figure out if its good or bad :(

anyways i have 60 500mg capsules. how much should i take prior to my workouts? and should i take it on an empty stomach or with a meal? any other tips, experiences?

^ You don't need those. The increased energy should come from the run when you're done. However, try half a pill. Go for a run. Come back. Do you feel okay? Then just do half a pill.

i took one with some green tea and ran 5 miles. and i sweat (swat?) like a pig hahaha, and normally i never sweat (well not that much at least)

^^well yesterday i felt great. i had a mild appetite (i usually have crazy munchies after working out)

about 3 hours ago i took 500mg w/ a B-complex shot, waited about a 1/2 hour ran, after about a mile i got really bad abdominal pain so i just turned around and walked home.

Here is a website I found, looking up L Carnitine:

"Most of your body’s energy is made by the mitochondria inside your cells. These mitochondria burn nutrients, turning them into energy. Carnitine is an essential nutrient that helps your mitochondria absorb and metabolize certain types of fats."

If your body can do this on its own and already has Carnitine to help do what is listed above, you probably don't need more. It's not that it helps you lose weight or give you more instant energy, but those are potential side effects from an increase in your body's ability to absorb and metabolize **certain types of fats.

After looking through the side effects, your complaints of stomach ache is listed as common. Your body isn't used to the extra added absorption of those fats. Do what you wish with this information. My opinion stands on lifestyle change.

** lowers triglyceride levels and may increase the ability to metabolize transfatty acids

oh and i know that your supposed to take vitamin B6 with amino acids like tryptophan and tyrosine.

so should i do the same with this?

Naturally Fermented CoQ10

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hy2ZOmLox-c

Anyone taking naturally fermented CoQ10? Have just started about two weeks ago on a dose of about 100 - 200mg twice a day.
Met John Oneil and had a lengthy discussion about the supplement, tested results hes achieved over his life...his results of taking it etc etc..

Interested to see who else is into this?

^^im not sure about naturally fermented CoQ10 but ive heard SO many good things about it in general. how have you felt since you started taking it?

and in other news:
i went out and bought some weight management/appetite suppresant pills.
they contain 7-keto and some other ingredients that stimulate T3 production,
does that mean when i discontinue use of this product that ill have less T3 hormone than i did prior to starting the product? (i.e. hypothyroidism?) ((i just dont wanna gain more weight than i had before i started taking the product))

oh and when i stop taking the product ill continue to excersize regularly and avoid crap foods, etc. i just bought em to help prepare me for summer =D

Advice for supplements

I've been reading over healthy living for a week now and my head is spinning. I'm looking for some supplements to try and repair my body after years of abuse.

Here's a bit about me.
I'm male, 35 around 5'11" weighing in at 85 kg.
I have been a heavy drinker for atleast 18 years. On average I would drink 8 a 12 stubbies a weeknight and could drink close to a slab a day on days off. I also have a still and make my own spirits which I drink aswell or instead of the beer. I have also played with pot and speed durin this time aswell. I took speed ever weekend for about 2 years where I would just drink huge amounts of alcohol cause I could not feel the affects.
Also on top of this lately I've been taking codeine.
I stared out 6mths ago taking normal dosage which grew into taking 6-9 tabs a day and also CWE 8-10 per day, 7 days a week for the last 3 months. So thats around 300mg codeine and 4.5grams of APAP ontop of the alcohol.
My diet hasn't been crash hot ether. Besides chewing on the pills (panadeine extra) all day I would down 1-2 cans of red bull. Eat 2-3 packs of instant noodles, drink lots of coffee then after work start on the beer till bedtime.

10 days ago I went cold turkey and stopped everything, after the WD I am feeling pretty good besides feeling like my brains in jelly some days/afternoons and physically tired sometimes.
This is where my plan starts, since I've stopped taking all the above I thought it might be time to start looking after myself while I can till I start drinking and using again.
Sofar I have changed my diet to...
1 multi vitamin (Centrum) in the morning
4 500mg fish oil tablets. ( I can tell the difference if I don't take them)
Washed down with glass of OJ
1 litre veggie soup ( canned ATM till I get time to make some from scratch)
1 ham/chicken/turkey sandwich on wholegrain bread
2.5 litres water
1 coffee in the morning
3 teas durin the day
1 green tea (trying to get used to it)
1/2 250g pack of crackers for munchies throughout the day
Dinner is usually a bit of meat with 5 veg

The supplements I'm looking at are
Milk thistle
Valarian Root
5 htp ( have to order, can't get it where I am in Oz)

I was looking into the 5 htp because off the drink I suffer from slight public anxity and I have a very short bad temper. This is the main reason why I drink.

So that's about it.
Just wondering what other people would recommend and why?
Also I get peckish at bed time what would people recommend to eat before bed which would satisfy me till morning

Thanks :)

^ Merged with the mega. As said above, there are a ton of supplement threads already--Even linked ya to some up in the original post. ;) There's also a link on how to use the search engine efficiently, which will bring you tons of results for 5 htp. :)

id deffinitley recommend milk thistle if your a heavy drinker.

not sure about valerian, if your using it for sleep id recommend something like magnesium (i know it sounds ridiculous, but magnesium is an NMDA antagonist) i take 200mg magnesium citrate before bed, and it helps relax my muscles and puts me in the "sleeping" mood. dont buy magnesium oxide though, because it has really bad bioavailability.

and 5htp is good for depression and insomnia. im not sure about anxiety. make sure you take it with green tea and B vitamins on an empty stomach so its' better converted into serotonin. but you cant take it for more than 5 days otherwise it begins to mess with your dopamine levels.

other than that, your routine looks pretty solid:)

maybe try and hit the gym a few times a week, exersize is great for the mind and body

Thanks mgmt, I've just grabbed some magnesium citrate but the only one they had also had black pepper in it. I also grabbed more goodies which I'll list later that I found listed thanks to addictivepersona who pointed me in the right direction.
I'm usally pretty good with searching, since my PC crashed I've been stuck on my iPhone which has made things very difficult.

One of several good things about milk thistle for a alcohol stressed liver is that the milk thistle helps raise glutathione levels back up. N-acetyl-cysteine is very helpful in that regard also.

Sometimes after a lot of alcohol for a long time there can be neuropathy problems. Alpha lipoic acid has been studied as being very able to treat and prevent certain neuropathies. ALA is kind of a universal anti-oxidant. It is also spares or recharges a lot of other anti-oxidants and has been shown as among many supplements good at helping increase glutathione.

There are so many supplements out there that a lot of it is finding stuff with the most bang for your buck because if you took everything with some good reviews for just alcoholism alone you'd be spending thousands a month. I was going to post about magnesium yesterday but mgmt&mdma beat me to it.

If you find yourself in a library sometime soon see if they have a copy of Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine by Michael Murray & Joseph Pizzorno as it has a nutritionally oriented chapter on alcoholism that is pretty good.

Yesturday I went out and got some
Milk thistle
Mega E
D3
Omega 3
Magnesium citrate
Coq10

I took the Magnesium last night and all I can say is that it works great. In about 1/2 hour I was relaxed.
I took all of the above besides the magnesium this morning, I felt good to start off with but now after 8 hrs I'm feeling a bit tired/sluggish so this is where I think a b complex would have been good (forgot to buy it last night).
Enki, this Alpha Lipoic Acid sounds like the type of stuff I'm after. I have just read a bit about on the net and it sounds like it's fantastic stuff. Hopefully I can find a B complex with ALA at the shops tonight.
I have been really dissapointed with the health shops around me, when Ive gone in there and asked questions about a product all they do is read out what's on the box. FFS I can read what's on a box. I want to know stuff like what people have mentioned here.

Thanks everyone sofar, this is great info.

Also I've ordered some 5htp which i should have in a couple of days to try aswell.

sounds good;) im glad the magnesium works=D

Next time you go shopping though, look for a fish oil with vitamin E in it. some products add vitamin E to the fish oil to prevent it from going rancid. i only say this because you said that you bought "mega E" and "omega 3", im just tryna help ya save money:\
