I'm planning on studying in Dublin next fall. I'm meeting with the school in November to discuss my application and the student visa process. However, can only one give me an overview of how it works? Can I work on a student visa? Acceptance rates for american students in Europe?

Anything you have to offer is good. Those who know me, understand I'm a serious worry wart ;) Just looking for some clarity

Im in Heidelberg, Germany right now on a reciprocal exchange program for a year. I didn't need a student visa. All I had to do is an immatriculation form and get a residency permit (you don't even need this for less than 6 months), which is fairly easy. I haven't finished my permit, as I have until the end of November to finish it and I didn't have all the stuff I needed when I went. Are you actually going to be a student of the uni? I am still enrolled at my home uni, OU, but I can take pretty much any class I want to here. I am fairly sure you can work with a student visa, but not positive. You should check with the Irish embassy/consulate nearest you to find out anything you need to know. Also, if you happen to be 50% Irish heritage I am fairly certain you are automatically qualified for citizenship. I am not sure about acceptance rates, as I was accepted by my home uni to study abroad. Hope this helps, and remember to get out of Dublin into the countryside. This is where the real Ireland is, and where it is most beautiful and friendly.
 
I just came from doing a one month program in England, and I met a couple people that were studying abroad, one of whom is currently in Edinburough. I'm not too sure how the visa situation works, but my friend in Ireland is there on a student visa. The details of that shouldn't be too hard to work out; just talk to someone in your school or whatever. Visa regulations should also be pretty easy to obtain from government websites I should think. If you'd like, I can contact my friend in Edinburough and get the scoop on some stuff for you.

I also met another person who was just finishing her program in Oxford, and she had been working for a few months. So yes, working is allowed and I would strongly encourage it since the exchange rate will be in your favor. Minimum wage in the UK ends up being like ten bucks an hour in American currency.
