The Stametsian rule for targeting psilocybin mushrooms (from mycologist Paul Stamets):

Gilled mushroom with purplish brown to black spores AND a bluing reaction on the flesh.

^Even then, there are other mushroom spp that will bruise blue and print blue, which are toxic. The best rule is based on habitat IMO.

To quote zophen: "If in doubt, chuck em out"...

Don't ingest these unless you are sure bro. Do your research and be 100% of what you are ingesting. To my knowledge there are only a few similar species to the psilocybin carrying mushrooms that are toxic and they are fairly easy to distinguish but better safe than dead or sick as fuck. If you don't have it already the Audubon Society Field Guide to Mushrooms is a great book giving you pictures, similar mushroom species (toxic ones included), spore print information and geographical information. Check it out it's a great read.

Edit: Whoops just saw you're from ireland. The Audubon Society book only covers North America, there's probably an equivalent or something close over on your side of the world though.

Keep in mind there is just no way to be sure when you are mushroom hunting in the wild, if you're not an expert. Realize that you are taking a risk by trying to identifying something and utilizing it without actually being able to make a safe ID.
