I need a decent monitor/loudspeaker for rehearsing with an electronic drumkit and studio playback. I'm looking for something powered with a 10-12" sub, 1-2" cone (any material besides paper), and at least 125 watts. I'm just starting to piece gear together and am by no means a "professional".

My first choice would be Mackie Gear like the SRM350's but its a bit out of my price range. I have found some used on Ebay but in the event I don't win the auction I want a backup plan. The brands I'm finding fit my price range new are American Audio, Gemini, and Marathon. The only one I've heard of is Gemini but I have never actually used their gear. I'm completely clueless about AA and Marathon. How much lower quality are those company's gear compared to say, Mackie or Peavey?

I highly recommend M-Audio. In terms of value-for money, they simply cannot be beaten! They used to just make cheap monitor speakers, but in the last couple of years they've brought out some middle-of-the-range speakers, which are just as good as the established brands, albeit a fair bit cheaper.

Check 'em out - http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=products.family&ID=studiomonitors - bare in mind that the prices quoted on that website are the RRPs, and you'll actually be able to get them for significantly cheaper than that.

Oh, and forget about ebay. I bid for some music-making gear on there earlier this year, but didn't end up getting it. Basically, ebay is full of idiots who always increase their bid at the last minute, just so they can 'win' the auction (they seem to think that auctions are some sort of competitive sport, LOL), and as a result, 2nd-hand music-making gear tends to sell for about 90% of what it costs brand-new. In other words, you may as well just buy it brand-new!!!

Edit: Think I may have misunderstood - are you after studio monitors, or speakers to play out with (in which case you may want something a bit more powerful and robust than the M-Audio studio monitors)? Either way, my point about ebay still stands!!!
