Opioids Sorting out: withdrawal from long-term pain meds, jet lag, and bad street food

Hey guys,

I've been taking opiate pain meds (started with 5mg vicodins, then 10mg norco, and now 7.5mg norco, 4-6 tabs a day) for about a year and a half. This is resulting from an injury that I'm still being treated for. The pain meds take the edge off the injury a bit, but it's all about how much pain / discomfort I feel like experiencing in a given day. Fucking annoying.

A few times over the last year, I've gone a day without any opiates, and never noticed any particular withdrawal symptoms. This was sort of a test for myself.

I spent the last month or so traveling in south Asia. While I was away, I noticed a few extremely restless / sleepless nights, which I solved by popping a norco and/or temazepam. In each case it had been maybe 12-16 hours since my last painkiller dose. At the time I chalked it up to trying to sleep in the tropical heat.

4 days ago, I ate something I shouldn't have eaten (damn those enticing mystery meat street kebabs). The next day I was sick - vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, gas, the whole bit. This happened to be the day of my 26-hour trip home. I spent as much of the day in bed as I could, and then loaded myself up with fluids, Immodium, and norco, and hit the road. It was uncomfortable, but I managed.

Now that I'm back, I'm trying to get over the jet lag, whatever I picked up from the street food, and I'm wondering if withdrawal symptoms could now be in the mix.

I haven't taken any drugs since I got home, as I'm trying to get over this food poisoning thing. I'm pretty much on tea and yogurt right now.

Anyhow, I've noticed that I am, at times, feeling a profound sense of restlessness. It's striking just how uncomfortable it is. My legs and arms want to twitch. I can't lie still. Sleep won't come. I've also learned that some of my food poisoning symptoms could actually be withdrawal from the norco.

I'm trying not to take any norco, under the theory that it interferes with normal gastrointestinal functions. There's no point in torturing myself with withdrawal symptoms (if that's what they are), however, as I do have a supply of norco that will get me through until I see the doctor next.

Timeline:
T + 0 hrs: wake up sick in south asia
T + 15 hrs: depart south asia
T + 35 hrs: last dose of immodium and norco
T + 41 hrs: arrived home (1PM)
T + 50 hrs: first signs of restless sleeplessness
T + 62 hrs: profound restlessness. arg. took temazepam. slept.
T + 72 hrs: woke up. still feeling restless but not quite as bad.
T + 78 hrs: posting this.

So, what do y'all think? Could this be opiate withdrawal?

My arsenal includes:
  • 100mg azythromycin (for nuking bacteria)
  • norco for pain
  • temazepam (for sleep while traveling)
  • cannabis

I guess I'm going to start taking the norco again, but if I could mitigate withdrawal with weed and temazepam, that would be preferred.

It very well could be opiate withdrawal my man. The thing is that as far as norcos go 1 day without them really isn't that long. You might feel shitty, but definitely not as shitty as you would day 2,3 or 4. You've been taking opiates daily for a year and a half and your current dose is up to 45mg so yes I'm sure you probably would experience some opiate withdrawal if you stopped.

Now you may have eaten some bad mystery meat to boot so it may be a combination of both, I don't know.

Yes the temazepam and weed would help your withdrawals but I couldn't exactly guarantee you'd be able to sleep on that flight back ;)

I didn't stop taking the opiates until after the long trip home. It's when I got back that I noticed I was feeling shittier and shittier, when I expected I'd be getting better and better.

I took a norco last night, a few hours after posting, and lo and behold, I'm feeling better today.

The doctor's said they weren't too concerned about dependence as long as I was under 100mgs a day, but that I should be aware of the possibility.

The idea that it gets worse on days 2-5 is quite interesting. If that was just the start, then damn.

yeah you were definitely wding. the general rule is that the WDs peak around 70 hours after your last dose.

Jebus, ok, well I guess now I have a hint of what I'm in for should I stop taking the pain meds. Damn.

Thanks for the info.

I'm still not quite right, but I think I just need to give it a few days (while I keep taking the norco) until everything has sorted itself out.
