hey everyone, i have surgery tomorrow and was just wondering if smoking weed would have any affects on the anesthetic/medication? the surgery is on my shoulder.

-not sure if this is the right forum, sorry if it isnt.

considering that medical professionals advise you NOT to do this several days before surgery, you should not do this.

it could affect the anesthesia, and your recovery time.

It's not gonna cause a problem. Of course doctors will tell you not to, they would even if you weren't having surgery. It will NOT affect the anesthesia, name one drug with proven interactions with cannabis, especially after it's left the system. I DARE you.

i'm not making this an argument, i know cannabis has perfectly legitimate medical uses. i was simply stating that it could, not that it will.

thanks for the fast replies guys, but the thing is the doctors told me nothing about it and i heard somethings from friends today (after blazing of course) that it effects the anesthetic and wanted to be sure before i go in.

i wouldn't, partly because i kind of like my body and want it to be safe during surgery.

think about it: would you want your doctors smoking 3 blunts before he operated on you? (try not to be a total stoner and say "heeellll YEEEAAAAHHHH!!!!")

but thats the problem its too late for the i wouldnt, its already been done before anything was known about it effecting the anesthetic. thats why i want to know for sure.

well, then i guess you'll have to find out.

but good luck with the surgery, i hope you recover fast.

hm. having to find out the hard way wasnt quiet the answer i hoped for, lol. but thanks.

anyone else had any experience with this?

...technically, all drugs have proven interactions with cannabis, some negative and some positive... just none life-threatening. however, when you're put on the surgery table and being sliced up and arteries pinched and, basically, pretty severe trauma going on wherever the doctor's operating, would you really want to have some random effect of weed like the thinning or thickening of the blood (not sure if this happens, by the way) causing major complications during the procedure?

OP, bad idea.

Blood thinning / recovery time would be the biggest worries.

I smoked up before I got my wisdom teeth out, that anesthesia worked fine.

I just got 5 biopsies done in the past 2 weeks, been high to each one, anesthesia worked each time.

I s'pose YMMV. This ain't a medical forum though, so all ya gunna get is best guess advice. If you had been told not to smoke, why do it?

thanks for the replys guys, when i talked to the doc a few days ago i was only told about what to bring/what not and not to eat drink X hrs before and to not smoke cigarettes.

i didnt hear anything about the weed and anesthetics till after i had already smoked weed.

so from what you guys are saying, the anesthesia should be fine, its just recovery times it will affect?

@beta1 roughly 24 hrs before

@chainer3k YMMV? (not to sure what that one means, lol)

what happened to "smoke weed, regardless"?

All day erryday all I do.

In all honesty I think you'll be fine OP, but personally I would want my body and mind in a clear and healthy state before doing any sort of surgery.

You'll probably be alright, but wouldn't you just rather not to be 100% certain of no complications? At least don't smoke the DAY of. Night before...yeah.;)
