ok so ive been smoking pretty much regulary for about 4 years. Regulary I mean mostly weekly. There was a time where I smoked pretty much every single day...Since starting college, I have forced myself to seriously cut back. After all I have heard after 4+ years of habitual use, permanent effects can emerge. So in order to save my memory for important things, like school work, I tried stopping during the summer for as long as possible...I went about 3 weeks... I told myself I wasnt going to smoke for all of my 1st Semester..of course that did not work out :( ... Now I have been smoking every weekend, only one time though, at night. My question is do you guys think this kind of use will be effecting my memory?...Of course it cant be helping it, but I am at a dilema.

There is a 40+ year old adult in my life who is a multi millioniare and has smoked pot all his life. He is a legitimate success...and he still smokes, but i wouldnt say he is addicted. he dosnt think about it often, and he dosnt make it a special point to SMOKE...sometimes he just does, and he might take 1 hit, and move on and totally forget about the bowl....

I know it would be beneficial to quit smoking completley....but I look at someone like the guy I mentioned and its just like oh well look at him, he did it......i can do it...... i have big goals in life, and one of them is to be extremley wealthy, and now i am second guessing whether or not smoking is harmless or not in college.

thanks for any input

ps
i used to experiement with all types of drugs in high school, i am completley clean with everything now except occasional social drinking and obviously the occasional toke

I think it depends on the type of person you were before you started smoking. Of course, there are exceptions to that rule.

Personally, I think pot has definitely effected my memory in a negative way. Not so much what I have to remember for work etc, mainly personal things, things that may have happened a couple of weeks, days, hours ago.

That, and paranoia, are the only real side effects I have from smoking weed.

I can function day to day with these problems, but thats ME. We are obviously different people so a little memory loss may mean alot more to you.

I'm not really sure how to end this. I'll guess I'll finish off with: If you think your pot use is going to stop you from reaching your goals, stop.

Hope that helps you a little.

This is the way I look at it: I know this 40+-year-old man who has been eating like a 400lbs gorilla all his life. The thing is he only weighs 130lbs and he’s 5’11’’. So I think well if he can do it then why not me? I love to get my eat on! But then I remember; oh that’s right people are individuals…….

I smoke every day, before and after work, and it doesn't seem to effect my ability to do my job as a System Administrator... I run an email network for about 30,000 people (for a big investment bank) and it's no problem...

^^ Right souper.... some people might experience a lot of undesirible effects w/ the weekly use of cannabis and others may not even notice subtle changes.

for me i only smoke once or twice a week and i just find it hard to remember words... but im 16 and the words i forget are useless words i get from reading Sigmund Freud and use while discussing such pieces of literature... pretty useless tidbits for someone my age but if i ever find that pot gets in the way of my central ambition then i will stop smoking... if you feel that pot has hindered your ability to further your goals/dreams then imo you should quit... but that's just me

i think the way to tell if your smoking too much is if your having trouble getting motivated to fulfill obligations. I personally smoke everyday, usually at night when I'm done with all my shit, and a lot on the weekends, and I don't think I've noticed any adverse effects that don't go away within a week of not smoking (no i don't have that much trouble stopping for a while). It definitely is possible to smoke and be successful, i've never had a problem with grades or anyting. I think its really funny when straight edge people who think pot will ruin their lives see successful stoners. And I think the recent exposure of more famous and successful people who smoke has changed public opinion.

On the other hand, i know a bunch of kids who have just started smoking so much that they stop caring about their responsibilities. This usually happens to people who have a lot around all the time, its kinda sad to see.

but anyway, i dont really see how weekend smoking can effect you that much, but, to reitterate, everybody's different.

once every weekend isnt bad at all.. drinking once a week does worse.

some people can handle smoking once in a while. others cant. i know a few people who can smoke pot once in a while, have a gram last so long it gets all old and dried out and not worth smoking, etc. i'm pretty sure could never do that; if i have pot i'll smoke it. thats how i am in general with substances. if you feel you need to quit, do it. then later in life when you have fewer obligations if you feel like smoking, smoke.

also, what you do while smoking may make a difference. i like to keep my brain active when i am stoned, and i havent felt much of a decline in cognitive ability. the one area i do notice loss is short term memory, but i think some of this comes from the fact that when you're stoned you tend not to pay attention. if i'm actually paying attention I don't usally have a problem with recall. important stuff i write down though :)

it all depends on the person really.... i love weed... love it... but if me getting the job $85,000 a year to start means quitting... ill quit in a damn instant... its truly up to the person, and what they want for themselves.... hopefully that doesnt sound too corny, but its the easiest way to put it

It depends on how much you have to remember, and how much you WANT to remember....I find that if I just have something useless tucked into my brain and i toke up a lot, i can't remmber it, but i remember all the vitals.

Yeah, memory is an interesting issue.

I find that as far as uni stuff goes and things that are pretty necessary to remember, i have no problems. The areas i've noticed a decrease in memory are just random things like forgetting i've already asked somone about their weekend, or told them about something thats happened. My memory of certain events can be a little hazy too, but i think when it comes to remembering the things that matter, i have no worries.

I agree with the statement that its more that i'm not paying as much attention when i first hear about something, as when someone reminds me of it its clear as day, it's in there, it's just latently laying in the subconscious - beneath the short term memory clouds of marijuana.

Peace

I think you can be sucessful and smoke pot without a doubt. Look at how many people are able to live sucessful lives drinking alcohol everyday, now compare how horrible alcohol is for you next to weed.

I smoked pot a majority of the time at my Ivy league college, even made deans list a few times. And it isnt just me, almost everyone I knew there smoked too.

It really is just a matter of priorities. Can you handle it? If you smoke pot will you do it all the time just to escape? Or will you do all the things you need to do, and then smoke some pot in the freetime to relax.

pot is as harmful to you as you let it be

my policy - dont let drugs get in the way of your goals

keep that in mind, and smoke all you want. You should begin to recognize if your smoking is interfering with what you want to do in life - that is, assuming you have clear goals.

^^^hell yes.

I know everyone react differently to substances, including cannabis, but I do not believe that it will inherently get in the way of your goals/dreams. I smoke a lot, perhaps too much at times, but I have very ambitious dreams and hold myself to high standards on my writing. I do weekly counseling to get over the bad/manic/isolated/fearful parts of my personality, and pot does not interfere with that. I am active, growing, and happy (despite what my sucky mood days might tell you).

For me, it's all about having a good separation between work and play. Write, do classwork, let my mind be sharp and active during the day, and then let it wander and dream at night. I choose pot over alcohol as my drug of choice because it's more of what I want in my relaxation.

silverwheel:

could you elaborate more as to what you do with your writing skills? I am a first year college student, and writing is perhaps my favorite. i am interested in knowing what you do. thanks

Hmm...I'm not sure if I like this line of thinking. I mean have you ever asked yourself or others "Drinking beer and being sucessful"?

Rationalizing your use is not good no matter what your vice is. Just make sure you indulge in it in moderation.

i agree with munchiefiend me and my friends are in grade 12 this year. last year we used to smoke every day during lunch.. we started skipping and do really bad in classes and all that shit.. so this year we decided to stop smoking during the day. it has worked out really well because its important to us that we graduate. we are getting good grades and going to class, but we still smoke every day. i find the best way to do it is to have a joint at the end after everything else is done as a treat and a reward.

yup, when i used to smoke more than i wanted i would still make sure i did everyhting i need to. Sometimes i would get home and just want to smoke, but i would always force myself to work out and do everyhtign else first..
So lets say you smoke and then dont do the work you need to do.. then i say dont smoke, but if you do the work and then smoke then go ahead
