small vs large gauge needles?

Is It just me or is It really harder to hit the vein with smaller gauge needles? (30 gauge) I ask because it seems like I almost never missed back when I used 25 gauge needles. Once I found out how damaging they could be however, I changed to 30 gauge. Now I seem to miss a little bit every other time I go to IV. Its really frustrating. They seem to slip out way too easy and Its hard to tell if blood is coming in cause it leaks so slowly into the syringe barrel. With 25g It would be very obvious. So Is It generally harder to hit with 30 or 31g or am I just doing It different?

Honestly, it probably comes down to probabilities ;)

Larger needle means you're more likely to hit a vein and the larger surface area offers more friction so it's more likely to stay in place. I can count the times I've used IV drugs on two hands but I preferred Terumo 29G 1mL 1/2". I find they don't bend as easily as thinner ones and they're small enough to avoid real damage.

I found this to be very true with 31 g and 30gs. It is also a lot harder to inject I think the smaller gauge means you can press down relatively. Easy and of will cause such pressure coming out of the needle to make your rig slip put easily. Especially so with barrels bigger than 1ml. I prefer 25-29gauges leaning toward 27-28-29

Just go one gauge larger and try those... also, getting a quality syringe like a BD will ensure that the needle is sharp and pierces the vein properly.
Also, you got to be hydrated, or your blood is just too thick.

I don't think it is a good idea to take blood thinners before shooting up, especially if you are having trouble keeping the point in the vein. You might end up with half your arm blue and purple.

Hmm..I always enjoyed 31 guage 8mm 1cc syringes. Wow, I don't think I'll ever forget what exact kind of syringe I used, after going to the pharmacy every day for two years (I bought/got fresh rigs for me and my at the time boyfriend). I enjoyed this size of needle because I had virtually no track marks. I am very thin so I have a difficult time with any size other than 30 or 31.

I think mine were generally Terumo Myjector 27 gauge with fixed 1/2 inch long needles. Also used BD Microfine 28 gauge. Microfines were meant to be sharper, but a bit of a pain in the arse cos blockages were common, possibly because we have to cook our gear with citric in the UK and maybe that makes the blood clot faster, IDK? Anything bigger was painful and pointless, anything smaller felt a bit too flexible. Don't think the needle was properly bendy as such, but just felt that sometimes the vein rolled away from thin pins at times. Never had a problem with 28 gauge Myjectors. They were plenty stabby enough. Could get in and stay in dead easy.
