I'm not sure where to put this thread, anyways I chose here, if this is wrong feel free to move it too the right area.

I have had horrible insomnia for a very long time. I don't wish to take sleep aids, or benzodiazapines. I have stopped using all meds that have abuse potential. I was reccomended for a sleep study by my psychiatrist, my question is, will there be anytime potentialy useful information that could come from this besides the reccomendation for sleeping medication.

I am open to other forms of sleep aids such as low dose tricyclic AD, or off label use of something like gabapentin.

I don't want ti dish out the cash for something that wont help.

If you've tried a lot of other drugs it probably can't hurt. I don't know enough about the emerging sleep drug research to really give you a more in-depth answer. Hopefully somebody can.

Im having the same problem coming off heavy iv h use. what i did was a combination. i would take benzos one night. and i made sure to only aquire enough for one day. i never wanna take something more than 2 days in a row now. so i took xanny one night, drank vodka the next, took regular sleeping pills one night, and so on.

I know this goes against pretty much everything you have said, but it does help and helps not building an addiction to either of them. as far as non chemical sleep aids, i would STRONGLY recommend melatonin. it is natural and "non habit forming". but again, i wouldnt take it more than a couple days in a row. Also, try the normal people methods. exercise a lot during the day, try reading a book (yes they still exist) drinking warm milk etc. insomnia is the worst, i feel your pain.

I wish I had the self control to do something similar to you, I just want to distance myself from even being in possession of benzos or z-drugs like ambien.

I have been taking meltatonin for quite some time now, often taking a few days off a week to maintain natural production of melatonin. I also use valerian and occasionally kava kava. Melatonin has many positive effects on sleep cycle, though it doesn't really help me with falling asleep. Valerian root has just slight relaxing properties but I figure it cant hurt.

Actually I have some recommendations. Find a herb its called Kanna- The family is Mesembricaeae and the name of the compound is Sceletium Tortuosum It is a stimulant slight without a body load afterwards Sedation follows. It is a natural SSRI with Moderate Anxiolytic effects, amongst others it yields an AntiDepressant effect as well.
I recommend the Antidepressant Trazodone to you.

It depends on the study.. Can you learn more about it before you get involved? Some are drug based studies while others use different approaches. Either way.. it can't hurt. Sleep is pretty important and I loose my mind when I have insomnia. I'd do whatever it takes.

Unfortunately I don't know much about it, I got pre authorization from my insurance company and the sleep study is tomorrow. I have a 2 hour consultation at 6pm tomorrow and study begins at 8pm.

I guess all I can learn will be at the consult.

Thank you for the recommendations, I will have to research kanna, I have not heard of it before.
I have actually asked for trazodone before, my psych said no for some reason. I'm seeing a new psychiatrist after the sleep study however.

So go, see what they have to say, tell them your concerns and what you've tried in the past.. and play it by ear. Then you can decide if you really want to go through with it, although, It really is worth a shot.

In my own experience, where during detox I always have incredibly bad insomnia..the only drug that worked for me was Quetiapine. I had tried many other drugs but it was the only one that finally put me down and it was such a relief.

i'm surprised that your psychiatrist refused to prescribe trazodone for sleep, it's considered non-abusable and most doctors will hand it out without a second thought. a sleep study is basically where you go to the hospital, get hooked up to a big multi-channel data recorder, and someone watches you while you sleep. it's good for detecting issues like apnea and so forth. but do note that it's called a SLEEP study, if you can't even get to sleep to begin with, i'm not sure that there's a whole lot that they're going to be able to do for you.

This is what I was worried about, but I'm hoping that there might be some information that is useful as far as circadian rhythm goes and possible issue there. My sleep pattern is all messed up, typically I am absutely exhausted from 8am-10pm and start feeling awake from 11pm-5am.

Maybe I should move out of Michigan, that's a thought.
