I just bought a bottle of meatonin to help with my mild sleeping troubles, and was just wondering if anyone else has taken this and how it affected there sleep,if at all

peace

yeah I took about 4 - 10mg of the stuff for a few nights but have to say it did very little (if anything). Maybe I'm just too used to harder drugs have harder effects but give it a try, it is supposed to work to some extent.

GABA worked better for me.. 2-4 grams before bed. Deeper relaxation and no grogginess in the morning.

works for me, even at times when i think ill never get to sleep

ive read a post saying you can build a tolerance to it. does anyone know if this is true?

Melatonin does little for me. I take it ocasionally anyway since I have many left, but haven't noticed anything really. Since I read it's safe to take up to 10 mg, I once took 9 mg when I really wanted to sleep. I ended up having strange dreams for next 2-3 hours, but not really in full sleep mode. I also didn't sleep very good for the rest of night either (it was my usuall sleep).

I do not smoke pot on a regular basis. I do not take other drugs to help me sleep, or downers in any way (just to qualify the below)

I tend to wake up in the night worrying about crap. You know ... what time is the cable guys supposed to come? "ok if I start the thing at 4, then I have just enough time for a work out at five ... etc"

crap that enters your brain at 3 in the morning when you are supposed to be sleeping. Normally, you would get up, get a glass of water or whatever normal people do, and crash back to sleep.

Not me. I stay awake for 2 hours wondering how to get it right.

Not on melatonin though.

If I take it, I STILL wake up; I have the fleeting thought. Then I crash again.

People who don't stay awake at 4 in the morning agonizing don't understand the beauty of it.

Melatonin has helped me as well. And yes, it's very subtle but it does work. Your brain naturally produces melatonin to put you to sleep, it's sort of like the body's own sleeping aid. For this reason I don't think you could build up a tolerance to it unless you were taking a ton every night. That could make it less effective or something. I've also had vivid and vibrant dreams that I can remember the next day from melatonin.

I'll take melatonin to help sleep. i just take 1.5 mg but always notice that i have very strange dreams when i do. it helps me fall asleep but i wake up in the middle of the night sometimes

Taking melatonin for me improves dream recall, and on accassion will make my dreams more vivid and realistic. It does help me fall asleep, but I've found that taking it results in a good 12 hours of sleep rather then the 8 hours I should be getting. If I take it and get up too early, I feel sleepy all day :/

My husband has a tolerance to it. It used to just knock him out, now he's taking more then just melatonin to sleep. However, melatonin works almost too well for me ;)

you want to take melatonin maybe 30 mins to an hours before you are ready to go to bed...you dont want to take it too late at night either....cause you will sleep in too late...or wake up at the regular time and feel like you need more sleep....if you take it during the day, you will experience artificial jetlag.

I took experienced strange, and very vibrant dreams on melatonin...and my dream recall was drastically improved...i dont have a problem with sleeping...but i find melatonin to be kind of recreational...for people that like to dream...if that makes sense.

yeah for real the dreams from mels are definitley stranger. it works alright for me, i use it every now and then. my bf always get something like panic attacks the from it the next day after taking it though.

I love melatonin. About every other night or so I take 1 which is 3mg and I just drift off to sleep without even realizing. No tossing or turning anymore. The next day I feel much more awake an energized and just in a generally good mood all day.

i love it too. especially the ones close to wake up point, where you realise your dreaming. you can do fun things, like see whether you can control it. unfortunately, going on giant sex scapades never works as the short term memory isn't very active during dreams, and you start doing some random dreamthing.

also, i always quickly wake up right before sex. i've heard that spinning in circles in your dream will ground you back into the dream, if you feel you are waking up. out of the hundreds of dreams i could have used this in, i only rememered to do it once, and it did help.

anyway...back on topic..
i dont have anything on topic to say

I used to take doses of melatonin when I was into lucid dreaming. It is supposed to help get you into a state of deeper relaxation when crossing the 'reality gate' from being awake to your body being asleep.

It always gave me that dreamy half asleep feeling when your thoughts flow in your mind like water from one to another which is an exercise in learning lucid dreaming (staying mentally aware while your body falls asleep)

I would always let the pill dissolve under my tounge (sublingually) as it seemed to set in faster and probably got more of the drug into the bloodstream.

I am hooked on benzo's now so I don't know if melatonin would even be noticable for me. I have not taken melatonin in years.

Anyone know if there are any issues taking melatonin on top of benzo's?

^melatonin isn't a drug, it's a hormone made in the pineal gland. you have some in you without taking it. i really doubt it'd have any bad effects in combo with benzos, it would probably make you evne more sleepy though ( of course)

"It always gave me that dreamy half asleep feeling when your thoughts flow in your mind like water from one to another which is an exercise in learning lucid dreaming (staying mentally aware while your body falls asleep)"

that's an interesting way to put it. are you referring to the state usually shortly before (or after) sleep where you seemingly think completely random stuff? like everything makes sense but then you review it and realise it doesnt make sense at all. whenever i realise i am doing this, i fall asleep shortly after.. its also fun

I'm lead to believe that melatonin cannot make the jump from the blood-stream to receptors.

Take 5-htp or tryptophan instead and avoid that pesky placebo :)

If your problem is waking up in the middle of the night because you have racing thoughts, maybe meditation would be more effective than a pill.

Two nights ago I took about 1-1.5 gr of ALCAR, 1.5gr of piracetam, 200-400mg of DMAE, and 1 mg melatonin. It was strange night. I slept from 2 till 8 am. Usually I need more sleep to feel right. But that night I can't say I was really sleeping it was some mix of strange dreams (but not bad just unusuall) and sleeping. Best of all I wasn't angry as usuall when I don't sleep tight. And when I woke up (took me a cup of coffe to stop dreaming) I felt great and relaxed and not tired. Actually whole that day I felt unusually good.

I'm going to try that again tonight and see what happens.
