Shrooms ..caps or stems

caps are more potent. i'm pretty sure. someone correct me if i'm wrong, but it just makes sense that caps are most definately more potent. but eat both yo cause the stem also contains the psychoactive compounds.

The difference doesn't seem to be that significant. An eighth of caps and an eighth of stems will both make you trip about equally as hard.

Yes, caps have more potency - that's what you want to be eating, but I eat the whole lot because, as DPP said - the stems also contain psylicybe too

Happy shrooming!

Its amazing but in all my years this is the most common myth about mushrooms.
The difference is minute, yes there have been some instances in studies done to show a difference, BUT its minute and really doesn't matter to us shroomers.
I don't think this urban myth will ever die, its truly amazing how it keeps coming up. I guess thats what places like the Shroomery are for, to stop mis-information.
Heres a very recent post at the Shroomery about just this question, it gets asked probably every 3-4 weeks in our forums.
Who eats the Stems?
If you don't believe me, please note that mjshroomer (John Allen) also says it doesn't matter. Being that John has written countless books, I think his word is close to law around these parts

Thanks Thor, that cleared it all up for me, my educated guess was that there is no difference, i just needed someone to tell me so.

Most everyone above is correct...there is virtually no difference between potency of the caps and stems. Anyone that disagrees can feel free to save their "less potent" stems and I'll gladly take them.
As for the statement that Cheese made above reagarding the bluing areas correlating with psilocybin...this is not an urban myth. The bluing in shrooms is caused by the decomposition of psilocybin, so whereas is doesn't actually show where the active psilocybin is, it does show where the decomposing psylocybin is...however, this tends to be the same thing because the areas with higher psylocybin decomposition are also the areas with higher psylocybin content.

Yeah the bruising blue coming from decomposing psilocybin thing sounds pretty shady to me. Why would merely pressing on a mushroom make the psilocybin decompose?

Blueing IS caused by decomposition of psilocybin. When you bruise a shroom it exposes some fresh material to the oxygen, decomposing some of the psilocybin and turning it blue.
The reason that several non-psilocybin containing shrooms blue when bruised is because they contain chemicals that ALSO react to oxygen with a blue color.

i don't think i can totally agree with PA, psilocybin degradation occurs once and the viel starts to break, it dosen't just sudenly decreas when the spores drop. however once they do drop the degradation slightly accelerates. I think it has more to do with the fact that the mush begins to rot
