New Apartment. First time I open the door the thought "Smells like wet dog!" enters my mind. The carpet has been shampooed recently, and was still wet. The guys who did it didn't turn the heater on to dry the place thoroughly, and it has probably been wet a few days. It's not warm though. There's a stain in the center of the room.
I thought the smell might be residual shampoo left in the carpet, but I got it steam cleaned today and it actually smells worse.
I am thinking that
A. Previous tenant had a dog and while they were away at work or something, this dog had accidents. I don't see anything obvious, though, but maybe the brown stain (which could be something else).
B. The wetness of the shampooing got down to and under the padding, and into the flooring, and caused mold/mildew growth.
C. Both, and mold and bacteria from urine/feces of animal being there..
I still have possession of my other apartment, which I am in right now. I was exiting this one to escape a neighbor that uses fragrances- an air freshener that overwhelms the hallway (fucking bitch, you don't pay for the entire hall), but I am now thinking I should stay. When I made the decision to move I was stressing about her being right next to me, and the smell in the hall, and sometimes smells that come through the ventilation of our bathroom (when she shampoos her hair). I used to have my area on one side, closer to her, but I have moved. I don't use that space anymore, other than to walk through, which is fine with me. I've grown accustomed to holding my breath, or using a particulate respirator to filter out the chemicals that make up the fragrance, when in the hall. It makes me look like sub zero/scorpion, but I am cool with that. To mention, I have anxiety, and headaches, among other symptoms, dealing with man-made fragrances. Strong air fresheners make me feel like I'm huffing fumes... In fact I can be around gasoline seemingly easier than I can those, or perfumes.
My apartment has it's own issues, besides. I really have to clean.
I'm pretty sure I have a good enough reason to back out of the move, now with the stain in the carpet, steam cleaning, and no change in smell (it's actually worse now). I signed a lease for that one, but it should be fine, don't you think?
I really want to get out of here, but it's like I'd be moving from bad to worse in this situation, I'm thinking.
It did get better. I added many plants to filter the air, when I thought the apartment was offgassing something (shampoo was on mind)- peace lilies, golden pothos, and one other kind the name of which escapes me, but about 8 plants in total... two fairly large, two medium, and four or so small ones. They're from what I read, really good at filtering out things toxic to animal life like us. This made it so I didn't get a headache to be in there, but I still smell this musty, dog smell, and I can't imagine enjoying that. But I have been on the fence, too, because the plants did really help out, from before I would get a headache from being in there, and feel a little disoriented, and now not quite as much, and the air quality is probably better, because of those plants. But, I can just move those over here. Still, this place is a dump. I'm just used to it. But I can clean it.
I'm supposed to turn my key in for this place in about 40 hours or so. I still haven't decided... But I keep on running back to this place, because it's familiar. I haven't even began to move things over there, or clean this one. I think I'm staying, and looking for a house or something. I just don't think I'm going to get that wet-dog smell out of the carpet unless I tear it out, and replace, it, and I don't feel like huffing glue.
