I was prescribed and started taking Librium last Thursday to detox from alcohol. I was given 10 25mg capsules and the instructions were to take up to 3 daily as needed. I've only been taking one later in the day because I take my prescribed 2mgs of Xanax earlier in the day so I didn't really need it then. I've also been taking 1mg of Ativan at night. So basically for the last 5 days I've been on 2mgs Xanax, 25mgs Librium and 1mg Ativan. Problem is I'm out of Ativan so tomorrow will only be Xanax and Librium. And as for the Librium I have 6 left. So I guess my question is should I be worried once I run out of the Librium and am just back to my normal Xanax. I want this to be as painless as possible because I already withdrew from alcohol last week.

It's metabolite is a long acting benzodiazepine... I believe it would be like tapering off of a benzodiazepine and going to a lower dosage and you may have some withdrawal effects while your brain gets used to having a lower dose in your system. I wouldn't be super worried, it may be a bit uncomfortable until you get acclimated to just having 2mgs of alprazolam in your system but you still have a benzodiazepine in your system so it isn't like going cold turkey.

You haven't been takong the librium that long at all and I believe you will feel the lack of ativan more than anything, that is if you had been on that for awhile. If you want to get off all GABAergics, I would recommend maybe gping on diazepam (valium) or clonazepam (klonopin) and doing a taper. They have much longer half-lives and allow much more stability. Libriums metabolite is desmethyl-diazepam and it's half-life is about 200 hours so it is pretty much like taking straight diazepam anyways.

I would only be concerned with rebound anxiety.

Is there any way that you can take 1mg xanax in the morning and 1mg at night. Or .5mg in morning .5mg at lunch, and then 1mg at night?

Personally, I would hang onto the librium for when you have a resurgence in desire to drink.

Anxiety was ok tonight without the Ativan. Thanks for the replies. I'll probably go off the Librium tomorrow and then finally be back to just my maintenance Xanax.

that is a good thing. Have you considered taking a longer acting benzo? Clonazepam is nearly as strong as xanax, but it lasts a lot longer.

I wouldn't be worried about much if any in the way of withdrawal coming off the Librium. The Xanax should cover any withdrawal as compared to Alprazolam Chlordiazepoxide is not a very potent benzo. 25mg's of Librium equals roughly 10mg's of Valium which is about 0.5mg's of Xanax. So you should be fine.

Good luck on quitting drinking man i know for me atleast out of everything it was the worst drug to quit. The withdrawals from Alcohol are such a nightmare they make the worst Opiate withdrawal i have been through seem like a wet dream by comparison. I was put on 40mg's of Valium a day to stop the DT's and keep me calm after the initial horrors where over. I was also on 30-60mg's of Temazepam a night as needed (boy did i fucking need it) so i could sleep without waking up in a cold sweat from night terrors which was also another rather fun side effect of Alcohol withdrawal. Despite the 2 different benzos and the Oxycodone i also procured to help self medicate the pain of withdrawal and also the dysphoria and cravings i still was a fucking mess. I must have lost a good 10lbs in sweat alone during the first week. Never mind the loss of other bodily fluids 8(

Feel free to PM me anytime you want man even if it's just to bullshit.

I quit drinking at age 26 cold turkey from a 12 pack of beast ice tallboys and a quarter to a half handle of whiskey a day. I remember being on hands in knees in the shower shaking because I could barely stand up under my own power. The nightmares were pretty terrible when I could sleep. I ended up drinking again after that, but not to that degree. Alcohol withdrawals are very scary. I kept feeling these weird waves going through my body that would make me shake violently.
