Use this thread to post anything philosophical or spiritual you've been following lately, whether it's a written work, movie, TV show, etc. Feel free to share some snippets of interesting knowledge from what you've been seeing!

I'm subscribed to a quarterly philosophy mail-out called Laphram's Quarterly, and I recently read their writeup on "Magic". Here is an interesting excerpt from Houdini about stage magic vs. some odd occurrences he experienced:

" Again many of the effects produced by mediums are impulsive, spasmodic, done on the spur of the moment, inspired or promoted by the attending circumstances, and could not be duplicated by themselves. Because the circumstances of their origin and performance are so peculiar detection and duplication of Spiritualistic phenomena is sometimes a most complex task. Not only are mediums alert to embrace every advantage offered by auto-suggestion but they also take advantage of every accidental occurrence.

For instance, my greatest feat of mystery was performed in 1922 at Seacliffe, L. I., on the Fourth of July, at the home of Mr, B. M. L. Ernest. The children were waiting to set off their display of fireworks when it started to rain. The heavens fairly tore loose. Little Richard in his dismay turned to me and said:

"Can't you make the rain stop?"

"Why certainly," I replied and raising my hands said appealingly, "Rain and Storm, I command you to stop."

This I repeated three times and, as if by miracle, within the next two minutes the rain stopped and the skies became clear. Toward the end of the display of fireworks the little fellow turned to me and with a peculiar gleam in his eyes said:
"Why, Mr. Houdini, it would have stopped raining anyway."
I knew I was risking my whole life's reputation with the youngster but I said:
"Is that so? I will show you."
Walking out in front I raised my hands suppliantly toward the heavens and with all the command and force I had in me called:
"Listen to my voice, great Commander of the rain, and once more let the water flow to earth and allow the flowers and trees to bloom."

A chill came over me for as if in response to my command or the prayer of my words another downpour started, but despite the pleading of the children I refused to make it stop again. I was not taking any more chances.

I am also aware of the fact that there are effects produced by magicians which they declare are accomplished by natural agencies, which other magicians are entirely unable to account for or satisfactorily explain. A notable case was a card performance by Dr. Samuel C. Hooker which included the levitation of a life-sized head of an animal, possessed of life-like movement while in a state of suspension and still there were no visible means of support. A number of these seances were given to groups of magicians only. On one occasion a dozen or more of the most expert professional magicians were in attendance, but no one could offer a satisfactory solution.

Many magical mysteries as practised for entertainment are just as incomprehensible as so-called Spiritualistic Phenomena and it is not to be wondered at that even minds trained to analytical thinking are deceived and misguided. Were I at a seance and not able to explain what transpired it would not necessarily be an acknowledgment that I believed it to be genuine Spiritualism. The fact that I have mystified many does not signify that what I have done, though unexplainable to them, was done by the help of the Spirits. Mr. Kellar frequently, particularly during the last two years of his appearance on the stage, said to the audience:

"Do not be ashamed if I mystify you; I have seen Houdini and his work and I do not know how he does it."

The simple fact that a thing looks mysterious to one does not signify anything beyond the necessity of analytic investigation for a fuller understanding. But to return to possibilities; I believe that the great majority of weaned manifestations can be duplicated but I am not prepared to include all, because, as before explained, some are spontaneous, and cannot be reproduced by the mediums themselves unless the identical opportunity should present itself, which is as uncertain as lightning striking twice in the same place—possible but improbable.

It would be extremely difficult, if not out of the question, to reproduce much of the "phenomena" by description as given by those who have witnessed it. The lapse of time and the fact that a story twice told never loses, renders such reproduction extremely doubtful. Were I to be challenged to duplicate any particular phase as presented by a medium, permission would have to be granted to allow me not less than three demonstrations. At the first, not wishing to accept any one's word as to what happened I should want to see the manifestation so that there would be no surprise attack on my mind afterwards. At the second sitting I would be prepared to watch what I had seen at the first sitting and the third time I would try to completely analyze for duplication. It might be that some peculiar formation or years of special practice enabled the medium to do a certain action and naturally it would require at least three seances to become thoroughly cognizant of the modus operandi, or the manipulative process used. If there were no fraud, then there could be no objection to the demonstrations. "

My interest has been drawn again to Ancient Aliens and I have more questions regarding Aliens being linked to Gods. I tried to look for the book Chariot of Gods which was suggested by L2R but the book store I looked into did not have any copies. I will look again at another book store tomorrow to see if I can buy a copy.

Looking across at my bookcase I had quite a wide range of spiritual/philosophical material that interested me, from the Holographic Universe (first book I got), Breaking Open the Head, Jung, Lucid Dreaming, Goethe, lot's of stuff to do with consciousness. But my range has narrowed right down in the past couple of years to just one author.. I finally discovered what I was looking for - a system or way of approaching Truth/a definition of who I am. Actually I came across two authors at the same time, but the other (Ramana Maharshi) speaks through the Indian cultural lens and doesn't lay out a system in Western language so isn't as useful as the other author (Richard Rose). The only other book I bought in this time was 'The Conquest of Illusion' by J J Van Der Leeuw.. which I definitely recommend and you can read it as a PDF online for free http://www.med.wayne.edu/degracialab/metaphysics/Conquest_Of_Illusion.pdf

I was very much impressed with what I read and heard of Richard Rose.. he is the real deal, there is no pretense or sales pitch, his only interest since a young age has been the pursuit of Self Definition and sharing his findings. I knew as soon as I read/heard what he was saying that this man was telling the truth. What is great is that he sets out some form of system for people to apply to their own life to be a better seeker.. it's a Zen like system and is very direct, sharing similarities with what Maharshi said, but because it's in a Western language and is very scientific it is immensely valuable. After his Enlightenment experience he wrote some books and spoke at Universities to young people and groups (for free), and also invited those interested in pursuing the Truth to his farm in W. Virginia to work together. His actions alone really resonated with me.. he was most certainly the real deal. Unlike other mainstream 'masters', like Osho, he did not have flashy cars, loads of money, drugs, women.. he was essentially a short stocky hillbilly who lived on his family farm.

This website has lots of PDF's, including Rose's writings, a very good resource for a seeker or someone looking to stir their head up: http://www.searchwithin.org/download.htm

This youtube video is a short interview with Rose on his family farm, by some of the University students who visited for a weekend to see what he was about (the full video is available as a DVD). Watching him talk you can see he is just a regular, but real, dude: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Qv7Jo0Tmi8

This youtube video is one of Rose's talks (Zen and Death) given to students at a University group. It's one of 6 available. I spent about £100 on the talks and books.. the most valuable material purchase I have ever made. If I lose all my other books and material (or other possessions) I would not care. His stuff is absolutely valuable because of its practical value. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SREGC7Z9g_A

=== Quotes ===

"We live in a cloud of illusions and rarely realize that we are spinning this web of fiction for all the hours and days of our lives, unless we are fortunate or unfortunate enough to die slowly. Perhaps slow death may be the only moments of reality for the total life of many earthlings. Because the dying person is forced to face the fact that he is about to become zero."

“Young people today [1987] don’t have an interest in philosophy and mind science. If they have any higher interests at all, it usually involves psychic phenomena. They have to be led by the hand from ESP, stories about hauntings, telekinesis, and other phenomena to something more meaningful, like the study of the mind.”

I've been thinking about an idea recently highlighted by Rupert Sheldrake, who suggests that the physical constants of the Universe, are not as constant as some may suggest. He's only echoing ideas already out there, I think Alfred North Whitehead has suggested the laws of nature are more like habits, than written-in-stone law.

I came across a talk by the physicist Paul Davies, and although it's not exactly about the above idea, I think that what he's saying dove tails nicely with it. He states that both the religious folk, and most scientists, posit something outside of the universe in order to explain it (God for the religious, and something like String Theory or The Many Worlds Theory for the scientists)

Davies argues that maybe the laws of nature are actually co-emerging with the Universe. It's a pretty cool talk.

Well, (absolute) Science is just a heritage of Western Platonism. It rests on the major presupposition that there are fixed unchanging laws in the changing universe. That is, it posits something "beyond" the sensible universe. Who says the laws of nature don't change also? And would this not make the whole enterprise of science (as looking for an absolute order) absurd/useless.

However, there is nothing wrong with a pragmatic approach to science ("if it works, it works"). Making some epistemological claims is a whole different story. Luckily, most scientist don't worry about that.

^ Davies actually discusses most, if not all, of what you're saying here (IIRC). He talks about how he was once a Platonist, but has managed to convert himself to a different way of thinking. He's not saying he's right or anything, just merely presenting his current train of thought. I like a quote he mentions by John Wheeler, "the only law, is that there is no law."

"Who says the laws of nature don't change also"

I thought this was quite a firmly held belief amongst most scientists. I could be wrong though. I thought the contempt shown towards Sheldrake for even attempting to discuss this, was indicative of the dogma held by some within the science community.

Aside from scrutinizing my faith, I have gone back to reading historical events regarding crusades, inquisitions and lives of popes including the cardinals/friars who had influenced politics in older times.

My latest known Bible is Rand's The Virtue of Selfishness. Though I'm trying to start reading Buddhist texts, but figuring out the right hierarchical order to exploring them. Pretty tangled stuff.
