First post here, I abused dxm 3-4 times a week for approx. 6 months beginning this time last year. Now I'm here 3 months since last dose, which was months after the heavy use, with depression and awful anxiety. I can't even meditate any more and cognition impaired. 3.8 in college classes during hs, and now a 2.5 in Real college. My gp scribed me sertraline (25mg for 7 days then 50) and magnesium for pain and possible deficiency. I noticed myself very sensitive to the meds, also I took 50mg first day by accident. Colors look brighter, mood shift, no shakes within 3 hrs of first dose. And as a daily toke it completely changed the weed high for me, almost trance like.

Sorry for being long winded but my questions are concerned with if there can be any affect from my former addiction with dxm on the way the ssri will work? and should I be concerned with my immediate sensitivity to sertraline and marijuana? Really trying to get out of this rut in life.

If you think that's long winded, you should read our tweaker posts! JK, I'm sorry I have no input

Ahahahahahahahahaha, yep, welcome to Bluelight.

I've never come across any long term damage to the serotonin receptors coming about from DXM abuse, so given that it's been some months, it's more than likely that you're in the clear (although none of us could ever say for sure since we are not medical doctors)

What seems more probable to me is that you just had a funky reaction to your first time taking the sertraline (as many people do, myself included), and it interfered with some of the other psychoactive substances you were taking. If you were feeling weird to begin with, would it not be much of a stretch to think that your smoking would also be effected?

I got this weird sensitivity to light when i first started on my dose, and would just feel a lil' "off" - but after that it really helped my anxiety and depression for the year that I was taking it. My recommendation is to be sure to take your doctor prescribed dosage of 25mg and see how that goes, and to take a day off from the first 50mg dosage, to get your levels back to normal and to ensure that your side effects aren't any more pronounced. (Any other side effects that arise you should simply call your doctor and see what he has to say).

Dirzted, thanks for the reply. I continued after the initial dose with the prescribed value. I'm rearing in on a week and I notice the effects, the drug is doing what its supposes to. still sensitive to certain things and feeling countless weird body sensations that I have always attributed to anxiety, not the medication. But is this prescribed happiness worth buying into? I feel well now but I am worried about dependency and somewhat think it may be better to tough it out and pursue other routes.

^I'd say if SSRIs work for you just take them for a while and during this time when you're feeling good start exercising, meditating again, doing yoga and eating healthy etc.
And when you feel like you have a grip on your life again you could think about getting off sertraline.

Also it's normal to be depressed and to feel weird after that much DXM if you ask me, dissociatives abuse esoecially DXM is nasty in the long term. I'm sure you'll be back to your old self in a while just give it time.

Haha well zoloft's not supposed to begin working for at least 2 weeks, but whatever- if you're feeling better you're feeling better and that's all that matters.

It's really not "prescribed happiness" it's much more subtle than that, zoloft is nothing compared to actual recreational substances. I wouldn't be too immediately concerned with the drug and really give it some more time to understand how it effects you, there's alot of absolute bullshit going around from these "wellness" centers and homeopathic doctors about anti-depressants, DO NOT EVER LISTEN TO A HOMEOPATHIC DOCTOR FOR ANYTHING- that does not just apply to the zoloft issure either... anyway ya just give it time and see how it works out, you can always get off of them-

I guess I will keep with it for the time being. Though I noticed the effects pretty quickly, possible placebo since most of my weird feelings are anxiety related or are excentuated during some highs. If panic attacks and motivation/concentration are still a concern I may just ask the doc for alprazolam and an add med for as needed. Damn tussin, such a bittersweet relationship.

get off that cough medicine pronto (dxm = no good), keep the sertralin (not really necessary, but if it helps), get your healthy lifestyle going (excercise a lot, eat healthy, cut down smoking) and you will be back on track very soon. :D

I've been off the syrup for '7 months' with the last relapse 3 mon the ago, and after all relapses were far from enlightening I dropped the bottle for good. Still smoking daily and debating it's harm on me. I know many times it has been a problem without me previously knowing so, but if all other aspects of life are good(mood, activity, diet, libido hehe, etc), can keeping on the herb be all that bad? Many times I feel marijuana just excentuates my current mental/life status.
