Searching for keywords/phrases from any site on BL using the Firefox SearchWithin plugin

I got some inspiration from felixdahousekat with his idea to make it easier to search user galleries. I wanted to make it so you could search for anything on BL or any other site just by highlighting a word, right clicking and performing a BL search with the plugin. Here's how I figured it out. It involves a little bit of tweaking, but even the novice user should be able to do this as long as they're good at following instructions.

I guess sometime tonight felixdahousekat will be posting his tutorial on how you can search for user's galleries by right clicking on their name. It makes life SO much easier and I give him mad props for figuring this out.

The first few steps of this tutorial were borrowed from felixdahousekat. I'd like to thank him for giving me this idea in the first place.

==============================================

1. Download & install the 'SearchWith' plugin for Firefox. This plugin is ESSENTIAL even without this little fudge I just invented, so try it anyway.

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2194/ (71kb)

2. Right-click anywhere and you will see a new item in the context menu - 'Search With >' - which then lists all the types of search (services) you can run on any highlighted word or phrase. What we need to do is modify one of these services.

3. Select Search With/Manage Services, and click on the Engines tab.

4. Type in a name such as "Bluelight Search" and click "Add Engine"

editengine.jpg

5. Type in the above options
____________________________________________________________________________________
Engine name: Bluelight search (or whatever you want)
Search Address: http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/search.php?do=process&query=
Extra Options: &showposts=1 (this is to show the results as posts and not threads, leave it blank if you'd rather see threads)
Icon path: http://i.bluelight.ru/pi/5.gif (This is the default BL question mark icon, you can pick another icon of your choice of course)
____________________________________________________________________________________

6. Click on the Services tab

7. Type in a name such as "BL Search" and click "add"

8. Select the search engine name you picked in step 4

9. Click close, then ok, and you're done!

To test it, highlight a word anywhere (on any site) right click, click search with, and pick Bluelight search

You can also tweak this by doing things such as searching for titles only under the "Extra Options" text box in the engine window.

I got the parameters for using VBulletin's search.php at: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=107955

I might come up with some more tutorials if I get anymore bright ideas.

I'm not a genius. As I've said, felixdahousekat was the one who found out about this plugin, and he figured out how to make it so you could right click on a user's name and have it go directly to their gallery. I decided to expand on his idea and make it so you could search for something on BL from highlighting something anywhere on the net. I also worked on some other add-ons that let you do this with erowid and other sites. If you are interested, PM me and I will let you know how to do this.

I had to learn how vbulletin's search.php code worked and all the parameters associated with it. That is all I did that is different than felix's idea. I was hoping we could each have our own tutorial on here and it would help firefox users both navigate to user galleries easily, and also allow people to find drug related information on BL from anywhere on the net.

Now I'm not sure he's happy that I went ahead and used his idea for my own purpose, so I might just take this thread down and let him go with his original idea. After all, he is the one who discovered this plugin. I spent some time figuring out the search.php parameters, but I wouldn't have been able to do this without his knowledge of the existence of the SearchWithin Plugin.

I'll decide what I'm going to do by tomorrow. Any input would be appreciated.

My only intention here was to help the bluelight community.

Chill, Sonic. %)

You just have a better work ethic than myself. ;) I would be pleased if you would just do another one for the gallery too (or incorporate it into this one?) - cos then all the screenshots would look the same, you know? :)

I wasn't doing it for the credit either (I left Uni a LONG time ago! ;)) - whatever's best for the users is the important thing here.

NOW - we just need to figure out how to secretly get our sigs working again and we're all set. :D

Ok, I'll make the other tutorial too, probably not until tomorrow, I have a consulting job tonight so I'm not sure when I'll be home.

Felixdahousekat's Bluelight Searching Users' Galleries - SOLVED!!! (Firefox) Tutorial

Ok, felixdahousekat has suggested I write this tutorial for him since I did the last one and I guess he's busy having a real life or something :).

Tutorial by felixdahousekat

Bluelight Searching Users' Galleries - SOLVED!!! (Firefox)

In the previous version of the Bluelight software, you were able to view another user's Gallery simply by clicking on the button displayed next to every one of their posts. Unfortunately this new version doesn't allow this by default, which means we have to jump through quite a few hoops to perform the same function.

So... how would you like to view a person's gallery by simply selecting their name/right-click/left-click?

==============================================

1. Download & install the 'SearchWith' plugin for Firefox. This plugin is ESSENTIAL even without this little fudge I just invented, so try it anyway.

2. Right-click anywhere and you will see a new item in the context menu - 'Search With >' - which then lists all the types of search (services) you can run on any highlighted word or phrase. What we need to do is modify one of these services.

3. Select Search With/Manage Services, and click on the Engines tab.

4. Choose one that you're not likely to use (I chose one of the Blog searches) and click 'Edit Engine'.

^ Change the entries to the above settings. You can copy & paste from here:

Code:
Bluelight Gallery (Blogs)
http://www.bluelight.ru/gallery/showgallery.php?mcats=all&si=&what=allfields&name=
http://i.bluelight.ru/pi/21.gif

5. Go to the services tab

6. Click Add service
editservice.jpg

^ use the name you created in step 4, since both felix and I made different parts of this tutorial it doesn't match 100% but you should be able to figure it out. PM us if you have any questions, problems.

7. Click close, ok, and you're DONE.

Now, all you need to do is highlight a user's name, right click on it, and select 'Bluelight Gallery' (also recognisable by its cute little BL icon!), and their gallery will appear in a new tab as if by magic.

SWEET.

=============================

OK, I've made that sound pretty long-winded, but it only takes about 5 minutes, and once it's done it's done.

Cheers
felix (gallery perve)

This should work fine, except for one minor glitch, which is an issue with or without this add-on:
In the case where users have had their username changed by the admins at one point or another. The gallery database isn't exactly in-sync with the bluelight user database. So in that case you need to know what their previous username was and search using the old name.

this allows easiest & fastest way to look up galleries of naked chix in the nudie thread:p thank you guys:p:)

I'll also take some screenshots about how to make buttons for searching erowid, rxlist, webmd, and more. I love this add-on. Thanks again felix.

Oh yeah, can we make this sticky or move it somewhere useful? I've made ones for the BL journal, rxlist, webmd, and erowid.

For BL Jounral, make an engine create the search address:
http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/journal.php?do=searchresults&sk=

Extra options:
&st=1&sort=journalist&order=DESC
(to sort by journalist in descending order, you can do a regular search and see what it outputs to pick other options)

For erowid I used the search address:
http://www.erowid.org/cgi-bin/search/htsearch.php?method=and&restrict=www.erowid.org&format=short&config=htdig&exclude=&words=

For rxlist I used:
http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/rxlist.cgi?drug=

For WebMD:
http://www.webmd.com/search/search_results/default.aspx?query=

Don't forget to make the services and link them to the engines you create.

Beware: if you update Firefox, and it then asks if you want to search for updates to 'SearchWithin', click NO or it'll reset things to default and you'll lose all your customised engines. :!

I updated, and had no troubles. Perhaps it is the operator?

Also, is this better served being pushed to S&T at this point rather than hidden away in SUPPORT?
