Hi,
I go to a public university(NIU) and am focusing in bio/math/orgo chem. I've earned 55 creds thus far (going to prob grad w/ ~ 135) & still have to take some humanities and interdisciplinary classes,
there's this biology grad school affiliated with City of Hope in LA and I was wondering if there's any UNDERGRAD schools that are like biology only or science/math only where you don't have to take any interdiscilinary classes/humanties? Does anyone know of such places?
Or any body know of any schools that have good humanities or interdscipilinairies thare are able to count towards university requirements, like forexample Latin or Greek would help me or some kind of class where I learn a lot of english vocabulary that could apply to science.
Thanks a lot, sorry if this was written horribly, ha I just had to get it down

Phew. Never heard of any schools which don't require interdisciplinary courses. I go to Cal Poly SLO for Biochem. Even as a Polytechnic, it requires humanities, english, psych, etc. It's frustrating, but it's not so bad to be well-rounded. If I were you, I'd save some money by getting the humanities out of the way at a community college and then head to a school with a great Bio program (UC Santa Cruz, for example) to finish up.

Wow, are you really that opposed to learning something about the human experience that you would *transfer* schools just to get out of taking a few simple non-science courses?

i highly doubt it, i would imagine that humanitys classes are probably required somewhere in the school accredidation process or something like that. but really man, humanities class are like the EASIEST classes ever, they can be a bit of a grind but they take a minimal ammount of time to get good grades in when compared to hard sciences. theres really just not much thinking involved in those low level "core" humanities classes.

I'm still crossing my fingers that maybe I'll transfer and not have to take 2 semesters of foreign language and global awareness.

Most of these gen-ed courses are actually bullshit indoctrination and do nothing to cultivate anything intelligent or good in you, and in many cases a serious waste of time. If you don't have basic english or speaking skills you'll flunk whatever you major in for not being able to turn in a decent paper or presentation, and it's just a waste of time to not hone skills they need to specialize in.

Which doesn't even get into all the bs alot of colleges try to impose on you...

In regards to your humanities and gen-ed requirements, just try to take classes that are a sort of 2+ in 1 deal, ie meets more than one requirement (global awareness And Environmental awareness course, etc). You can also find that many of the courses your major requires fit many of the gen-ed requirements. Personally, I'd recommend getting finished with the required courses of your major and the broader gen-ed courses that all undergrad schools had you take (like english and bio 101), and save your more obscure and school-specific courses for your senior year in case you transfer (like not all schools require foreign language or feminine studies courses).

Credits not switching over sucks, and it's even worse when it was with a class you despised ;/

lol @ the thought of takign something called global awareness. that sounds a little out there to me man, my humanities classes were like a couple of world history classes, psychology, a couple of english classes, oral communications(speach class) and US government.

Lucky bastard ;/

The global awareness class I'm taking now is about how oil companies fucked over the indian tribes in the amazon, even though these indian tribes are getting millions of dollars and no punishment for the continued murders they commit against oil workers. They might as well say capitalism sucks.

And there was that english class I took only about black authors (who always happened to be communists like langston hughes too) and nothing about white authors, because, to quote my teacher, "white people haven't suffered like black people have".

It's not like white people were enslaved by black people more than white enslaved blacks you know... ugh. What a stupid concept in the first place.

haha now i that i think about it, i think my grade wasn't too high in that class because i said langston hughes was a bastard in my presentation and went beyond the time limit in bashing him...

ugh, im glad i dont have to deal with teachers like that, i was lucky in my general electives, all my teachers were pretty open minded, even the teacher that totally disagreed with me in US govt ended up saying that even though he disagreed he enjoyed having me in his class and thought i contributed alot to the discussion.

my best experience in a general elective type class was doing my final speech on why we should legalize drugs. *good times*

theres some other fun general elective stuff too, my literary analysis was fun as hell. even though i totally disagree with the whole marxian view point, writing analysis from that perspective can be a lot of fun. i would have to say i was pretty lucky cause my general elective classes did a pretty damned good job of teaching how to understand multiple view points.

fuck this, i'm pullin off 4.0z this semster (cell bio, adv. org w/ lab, genetics, calc III)
i'm gonna bust out this, bump up to U of I!! !!! !:)

UK unis don't, you only do topics related to your degree subject, there's no "You must take 2 other non-specialty modules". Some courses allow you to spread out your topics, if you wish, but it's by no means compulsory.

I doubt the original poster is wanting to travel that far though.

Hey, I go to WPI, and we have requirements like that here. However, the beautiful thing about schools like ours (engineering and science focused) is that our humanities classes are, for the most part, absolute jokes. Yes, we get raped sideways in math and science classes, but I have never, ever taken an easier course then some of the "humanities" and "liberal arts" courses here =D
