Hi,

I'm being prescribed ritalin (3 x 10mg daily) currently and I'm taking 50mg sertraline a day on the side. Before I took the sertraline I made sure there were no interactions between the two by using a link someone posted here on this site.

My question is: sometimes (quite often for the time being) I take seroquel to fall asleep; typically 100-300mg. Are there any dangers in this combination of drugs?

there's always danger of co-dependence when mixing stimulants and sedatives. You don't want to fall into the habit of taking ritalin throughout the day and using seroquel to knock you out at night. Tolerance to both can increase as will the negative sideffects whilst the positive effects stay the same or get worse. 300mg is a high dosage for seroquel already, no? (maybe i'm wrong here but I thought many people used 25-50mg)

I don't specifically know if there's any problems with the zoloft in the mix; I don't know how it reacts with stimulants. I'm sure your doc would mention to you if he/she is rx'ing both zoloft and ritalin.

You make a great point, my doc would definitely have told me. I try not to use seroquel too often, but it makes it easier to fall asleep without taking my nightly dose of bupe.

^ indeed, if a doctor has prescribed them together it is usually okay to take them - if you have any concerns I would advise raising it with then.

This interaction checker warns that methylphenidate (Ritalin) can increase plasma-levels of SSRIs and suggests close monitoring - if you get any unpleasant side effects I would stop the medication and consult your doctor.

Watch out for the docs, man. Can't always trust a man that makes more money for giving you more scripts. Might not know about a bad combo or might not care. I ain't saying they're bad; just gotta learn up yourself too, ya know?

The money made from prescribing a couple extra scripts = much much less than money made from being a good doc and having patients recommend you

Taking a stimulant like methylphenidate on a daily basis isn't exactly healthy, neither is taking an anti-psychotic like Seroquel, but combining them doesn't really add to effect on health. You should be fine. My advice - Use the Ritalin and Seroquel as needed, seriously. 50 mg sertraline isn't that much so you're fine there.

effie, it was actually that very same interaction checker I used... evidently I missed something. But I haven't felt any unpleasant side effects yet, but then I've only been on this combo for a couple of days.

But all in all it sounds like you guys think I should be okay with this combo and not die from serotonine syndrome or something :) Thank you all
