Ritalin and heart beat

In my head
Hi all,

I am perhaps the most hysterical person you will ever meet when it comes to my own heart beat. The reason for this is that I once smoked crack cocaine with a friend of mine, and after blowing out the smoke I got a rush so intense that I thought my heart had stoppet (perhaps from an overdose or an extreme strain on the heart). Luckily neither was the case, but ever since then I have been nervous about my heart beat, and I have had palpitations numerous times. Anyway, that's simple some background story and not the actual question.

Earlier today, around 06:40 (which isn't that long ago since it is 07:56 as I'm typing this) I swalled 3 x 20mg ritalin, that is 60mg ritalin. I know it's not a very big dose, but I'm gonna ask you anyway. What is the fatal dose for ritalin? Am I in any danger? My heart rate is definitely elevated, but I've heard the danger zone is 180 BPM, and I'm nowhere that. Question 2: What would be a fatal dose for me? I'm a male and I weigh approx. 70-75kg, am approx. 180cm tall, and have absolutely no tolerance to ritalin.

Have a nice weekend all.

In rats the LD50 (fatal dose for 50% ) is 190mg/kg, so I think you should be okay with 60mg - although LD50 is unreliable really and you can't always extrapolate from animal studies. Regardless of that, 60mg is not going to be a fatal dose unless you are allergic or suffer an unusual reaction.

>180bpm is indeed when HR becomes worryingly high, and you would need to head to the ER if it reaches that level. Panic and anxiety can push your HR up too, so try to relax if you can :) Ritalin will increase your HR, it is a stimulant, but 60mg should be fine. If it is uncomfortable for you then take less next time :)

As always though, we can't tell you for definite over an internet forum, so if you are concerned about your health or safety then it is important to be seen by a medical professional.

My friends and family think I'm insane because I check my hr and BP all the time. Im a track sprinter and heavy weight lifter so those things are important to me. I avoid stims and hard working out.

Check your resting heart rate sometime. Should be around 80 or so. While on stims you will likely experience tachycardia which is a resting hr of over 100. Which really doesn't cause a problem unless your consistently around 140+ for extended period of times. As in everyday for months. This can put big strain on your heart. You have to remember that while working out hard your heart rate may be 180bpm if your sprinting or doing extremely high intensity stuff. This is only for a short period of time though.

More importantly is your blood pressure. You should check that while on stims. Just to make sure your not up there to high. Elevated BP is to be expected, you don't want to venture into stage 2 hypertension.

It's also very easy to get fixated on your heart rate. At times I find myself overestimating my hr by quite a bit. It's also common to experience heart palpitations. Where you feel your heart beat racing. This is usually not serious but can cause you to worry which in turn makes it more pronounced.

Okay, thank you both of you. But my question was also meant to be scientific. What would be a fatal dose (approximately of course) for someone like me who weigh 70kg?

^ :)

There may be more accurate data out there so try searching pubmed or google scholar. It is going to vary from person to person and be dependent on more than just your weight.

LD50 is the dose that is lethal for 50% of the subjects.

Simple question, if someone's got an answer that'd cool (:
if you took about 30 mg of Ritalin between 7am and 3pm and your resting heart rate was about 110-115 bpm, would cocaine that's like mid grade coke be a terrible idea later that evening?
