First time taking this, i don't have ADD and want to take it to focus and take down a whole heap of notes/catching up on work.

Is 10mg a suitable dosage for a first timer? Or would 5mg be suitable?

Also, What are the normal affects that i will experience within the first few hours, and how long does the whole sensation last.

Thanks heaps in advance!

20mg is considered a suitable dosage for someone who doesn't have ADD, normal effects with someone that doesn't have ADD is a jittery antsy feeling, increased social skills, suppressed appetite, dry mouth, rapid heart beat, dizzyness. This isn't a good idea to be dependant on Ritalin it has a bad comedown, Try B vitamin 100 complexes, they sell at Health stores and sometimes even in grocery stores.

That's not necessary bro we all make typos and it's better to typo 2mg than 200mg if you ask me ;)

PS the reason you can't sleep is cos you stay up all night on BL!

Haha yeah that would of been bad, thanks Bl gives me something to do when I can't sleep and I like helping people.

Hi David,
I'd like to clarify a couple of things. How much methylphenidate (ritalin) do you have on hand? Are you able to get more easily? What is your timeframe looking like?

The reason I ask is if you have enough to play around/ experiment with, I'd recommend you try 10mg. your first time using it. If you find that to be insufficient, THEN take 20. BUT- if all you have is say, 20 mg and can't get anymore , it's likely your meds would be wasted. (If 10 is indeed insufficient, you'd be unable to raise your dose the next time, as (obviously) you'd only have the 10mg left.

Honestly, I imagine you would be fine taking the 20, as has been posted. It's just that I DO know a couple of people who found 20 was too much for them. So I'm just airing on the side of safety...maybe I'm being overly cautious!

To illmantos and especially my friend TC...I'm hope this goes unsaid, but I am by no means implying that you have given bad advice :) I have much respect for you.

Oh! David, I almost forgot to ask...this IS immediate release ritalin, right? Meaning, is what you have plain old ritalin vs Focalin, Concerta, etc??

Thanks for reading, guys :)

Yeah, yeah man its different with everybody its all good. find a low dose and work up in increments is what I think david is saying.

K, a few things to say: first, illmantos do u take ritalin? if so, by cutting this out your panic may be tolerable; also ritalin at any dosage, 20mg, 10mg whatever, is not suitable for people who are not adhd patients or who don't have narcolepsy. ritalin is alright for some people when prescribed responsibly, but I made this post with the intention to make something clear. POINT: if you do not already have adhd or narcolepsy ritalin is not the thing to take to study, it won't make you smarter, it causes an illusion of intelligence, if you are not a patient, caffeine is perfect. Maybe speak with a Dr. because this seems iffy to me; the use of ritalin by any person who it isn't prescribed to is illegitimate, and the use of ritalin by people without adhd is even more inappropriate. If you have been diagnosed, you shouldnt have any question about dosages, follow dr instructions, but since you are asking if 10mg is a good study dose, il say ok, but il also say that it doesn't last very long, a better thing to do might be to take two half doses, and take the second dose about 2-3 hours after the first but in this case you still won't be able to study too long. for instance my intention when i woke up this morning was and is to study my face off, i don't use ritalin; for me a study session demands anywhere from 7-8hours on the low end to 12-14 hours on the high end, I'm not sure how long you are aiming for, but ritalin IMO/E did not meet my needs for this purpose, ritalin is the kind of thing that is good if your work wont take too long like 4 hours andif your task isn't very important to you, ritalin works for mechanical things, I love taking it when i dont study, but yea i just looked at op again and i saw you asked if 5mg would work, it might be all you need, you could even try 2.5mg bid (twice), or a 2.5mg dose every 2 hours would be alright as well, good luck, and an idea might be to think less about the fact you took ritalin to study and more the fact that you intend to study, good luckkkkkk, i am procrastinating, ugggh yea man hope all is well, and the effects shouldnt be anything too out of the ordinary.

^ Ah, I've got ya. I'm that way with some of the things I have tried in past. I have useful experience with them even though I haven't touched them in ages.

---------------

@ the OP: From my past experience with Ritalin (Methylphenidate) also not having ADD / ADHD I find it to be very unpleasant and overstimulating. I would try to avoid it and just go with some coffee to get through the work you need to get done.

As others have said though, if you do choose to proceed 10mg is a good starting point.

Yeah, I know that it doesn't make you "smarter" .. Just allows you to focus on one thing, without getting easily distracted which means you can take down a whole heap of notes at once. I am going to try 5MG first, and then increase to 10M. I'd rather start smaller than take 10mg and it happens to be too much for some reason. No i dont have add, or adhd. Yeap, its the fast release ritalin. Thanks for the advice guys, ill post back my experience.

^ Sorry, but we can't do drug IDs here.

Apologies for not fully understanding the rules on drug IDs.

The A/B Ritalin is made by Novartis

10mgs is fine, although i wouldnt reccomend methylphendiate as a study aid, as it is not very effective, and tolerance builds rapidly. also it has the most negative side effects out of any stimulant ive ever taken, including meth.
